  • Subtitles section
  • Hi everyone, Anthony Fantano here, the internet's busiest music nerd.
  • And it's time for a review of this new Ali X album, Girl With No Face.
  • This is the latest full length LP from singer, songwriter, pop producer, Ali X, FKA, Ali Hughes.
  • Someone who has been on the indie and alternative pop circuit for quite a while now.
  • Really since the mid two thousands, but it's only been until recently
  • that she's been able to build up some steady momentum, releasing solo music under the name Allie X. Starting to break through around the year of the film, with collections one and two.
  • Then again with Cape God in the year of the film, which is when she started to grab my attention, with this very safe but theatrical brand of slick print pop.
  • The sound was clean, the vocals were certainly better than what you'll find on a lot of pitch corrected crud in the pop mainstream.
  • But the LP still didn't bring a very specific or distinct sound that reminded me of Ali instantly.
  • Plus, the songwriting meandered a bit too much for pop music, even stuff that's more left field.
  • But since the release of that album, Ali has apparently undergone quite the artistic metamorphosis.
  • Because on this new LP, she's giving us a thrilling display of vintage throwback synth pop straight out of the eighties, which for sure can read as a little derivative here and there.
  • Case in point, the song You Sucked On Me, parts of which feel like Ali has essentially retooled bits of Michael Cimbello's Maniac.
  • but it's still a great track unto itself.
  • And then there's also the intro song to the record Weird World, which in a lot of ways feels like a toned down Deja Vu moment to Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero.
  • However, Ally's version here brings a totally different lyrical
  • theme reflecting very directly on the weird world that we live in, but also it kind of functions as an introduction to the weird world we're about to enter on this record.
  • The production is fantastic.
  • Ally's brooding lead vocals bring a vibe of their own.
  • And again, even if the reference points are kind of obvious, I can't deny going for something in this style seems to have lit a creative fire within Ally, because on this record, her sound is really coalesced around this vibe in a bold way.
  • And it's led to some really strong song ideas, too.
  • Take, for example, one of the big singles off of this record, Off With Her Tits, which is a hard hitting and unique body dysmorphia anthem, where Ally, or whoever she is writing from the standpoint of on this track,
  • seems to be incredibly stressed and anxious over the way they are being perceived due to their body, the way they present gender wise.
  • The pumping beats and aggressive synth bass lines eventually lead us to a narrative point where top surgery is being explored, and between the killer vocal range and the shimmering chord progressions, I don't know if such a thing has been sung about so wildly or dramatically.
  • But yeah, again, on this track, the vocals are absolutely stunning.
  • Also the case for numerous other cuts here, but there are times that I gotta say, Ally is, I think, pulling back a bit too much and underselling her capabilities a bit.
  • The song Saddest Smile being an example.
  • This is also the case for John and Jonathan Too, where Ally's delivery reads as more stiff than anything.
  • And while I do appreciate the song as an attempt
  • at trying to explore this fan artist dynamic, I don't really think it develops far enough to glean anything from Ali's perspective on it.
  • I have similar problems with the song Hardware Software, which for me on the record is kind of like this weird novelty detour with a lot of
  • corny, tongue in cheek, sexual innuendo between hardware, software, technology.
  • We have a lot of spoken word bits on the track too that are almost like rapping in a way, but have little in the way of flow or even rhyme scheme at points, and we
  • while I like the camp and I like the playful song idea, I just feel like it doesn't go far enough.
  • Ally really could have committed to the bit harder, not only in terms of attitude and energy, but with just funnier wordplay and catchier lines.
  • The abrupt ending of the song leaves a lot to be desired, too.
  • Things do pick up past this song, though, around the midpoint with the cut black eye, which to me, instrumentally, in a lot of ways, is complete and utter New Order worship, which I absolutely do not mind.
  • And lyrically on this track, Ali associates this love and thrill around music and listening to music with, like, the pain of violence or a beating.
  • Which, as somebody who's always trying to find ways to describe experiences I have with music, I mean, you know, I have no shortage of reviews where I've described something I've heard as, you know, feeling like a truck hitting me.
  • Feeling like I'm being torn to shreds.
  • Feeling like my skull's getting crushed into a million little itty bitty fragments.
  • Feeling like my toes are all getting smashed with a ball peen hammer.
  • Or like a big, cuddly, wuddly, snuggly huggly.
  • Yeah, that too.
  • I think this record has a pretty strong start, but that is met, unfortunately, with a kind of weak finish on the back end.
  • Staying power, in my opinion, does have some catchy moments here and there, but I think
  • It's a bit presumptuous as a songwriting idea, and also you would think a song about having staying power would have a better chorus.
  • But yeah, instrumentally and vocally, I think Ali plays it a bit too mild on this one, which I would say is the case for The Closer as well.
  • I do like the encouraging message attached to this track about sticking to your dreams, your craft, your creative drive.
  • But again, aesthetically, I feel like this one is another example of at least a few songs on the record where Ally is drowning a bit too much in the genres and aesthetics that she's emulating and is kind of falling short of putting her own interesting twist on it, either musically or narratively.
  • Combine that with a few more tracks that are forgettable or just don't go far enough, and we get a record that I like, I think has a lot of great highlights on it, but is falling just short of
  • of really making me fall in love with it.
  • With that being said, though, I do think this is all around a very solid embrace of eighties synth pop vibes with what is most likely Ali's best crop of songs yet, which is why I'm feeling a strong seven on this one.
  • Transition, have you given this record a listen?
  • Did you love it?
  • Did you hate it?
  • What would you rate it?
