I gave the Asus Ally a pretty glowing initial review.

I like it a lot, but I've been getting a lot of questions about it, specifically if it's worth getting over the Steam Deck.

I've been using them both for the last two months and I figured it's worth revisiting the Ally again.

A lot has changed and my perspective changed a little bit.

The Ally is at minimum a $700 device and the Steam Deck by comparison is at minimum a $400 device.

So that's points in favor of the Steam Deck, but the extra value that the Ally brings is that's a full-blown Windows computer.

Hey, shut up, Steam Deck.

And that's a lot of value.

It can play a lot of the games that the Steam Deck can't and I've been using it for those games.

It also just has Steam because it's just a Windows machine.

So it can also play almost everything that the Steam Deck can too.

So you might've came to the same conclusion that I did.

The Ally is like a Steam Deck, but more.

So case closed, problem solved.

It's gotta be better, right?

But it's not quite that simple because the added value that the Steam Deck has is that it's that PC experience, but in a hassle-free console-like form factor.

Things just work.

No tweaking settings, unless you really want to.

Developers want that great-on-deck badge, so they make sure that their games are optimized as such, making the experience way easier for us.

So I've been bouncing between the two devices for various games and use cases.

I figured it was worth mentioning why.

What has me picking up the Steam Deck over the Ally and vice versa?

How am I using both of these in my week-to-week life?

One of the more recent games I was excited to try out on PC was Street Fighter VI. Where I used to get all of my games on the Switch for its versatility, now I've been getting a lot of my games on Steam because then I could play it on my desktop PC right behind me.

I could play it on my Steam Deck.

I could play it on my Ally.

I could play it on my arcade cabinet.

I could play it on a laptop if I wanted to.

I have so much versatility now.

And you know, the Allies got more beef to it.

So I was gonna try to play it on there, but I was actually watching Dave2D's video where he says that there's a lot of settings you gotta tweak to get Street Fighter VI to run good at all on the ASUS Ally.

So I said, just fuck that.

I'll play it on my Steam Deck.

It just boots and it runs and everything's great.

Unless you wanna run around in the 3D environments.

Those don't run good on anything.

Oh my God, it runs so bad.

The Ally is technically better.

It has more raw power, but if games aren't gonna be optimized for it, it largely hasn't really made much of a difference.

The Ally has a higher res, higher frame rate screen, but that doesn't really matter much because most of the games I'm playing on here don't run that good at that high of a resolution or frame rate.

That's not to say games don't run good.

Destiny runs great and that's something that does not run on the Steam Deck at all.

There was a bit of a controversy surrounding the Ally at launch.

And the controversy was that there was a software update that improved performance slightly in some cases that was released a little bit after launch.

So some influencers published their reviews before this update released.

Yeah, man, how the fuck was I supposed to know there was gonna be an update?

I don't really do a lot of benchmarking on this channel, but anecdotally after that update, I didn't really notice much of a difference.

Like I leave my frame rate counters on, but I'm not really paying that close of attention to it.

I'm just seeing if the game runs good or if it doesn't run good, if it's gonna impede my performance or if it's not gonna impede my performance.

How much of a pain in the ass is it for me to play Resident Evil 4 on this thing versus on playing it somewhere else?

I will say that part of these updates was a boost in fan speed, which was noticeable because the ASUS Ally was very notable for how quiet the fans were, especially compared to the often obnoxiously loud Steam Deck.

There's also apparently an issue on the Ally with certain micro SD cards.

I think that issue is also heat related, apparently.

Some micro SD cards just don't work with the Ally.

I think they overheat too easily.

This has also been addressed in an update that changes something about the fan curve.

I don't know.

I don't even use a micro SD card in my Ally, so that doesn't affect me at all.

The Ally does seem to have gotten significantly louder after these fan curve adjustments.

It's still not that loud, but it's definitely louder than it was in my initial review and a lot less impressive than I remember.

One of the big things that actually got me picking up the Ally over the Steam Deck was, believe it or not, PlayStation Plus Premium streaming.

That only works on PC right now, and you can use it on the ROG Ally with the built-in controllers, so that's a pretty big plus.

And it runs pretty great, nice and smooth.

I just wish there was some sort of remote play support because I would love to be able to play some of my physical games from my PS5 in the living room on a handheld.

As of right now, the only official way to do that is with the PlayStation Remote Play official Android or iOS app, and I don't wanna have yet another device sitting on my bedside table.

Every night, what I end up doing is I pick up the Ally, download a game or start an update, and then I just pick up my GBA and play Castlevania.

That's been my ritual.

But I did finally get Chiaki to work on something.

I got her to work on my Ally, of course.

I used a tutorial on rogallyfe.com, of all things.

And this was the first tutorial for Chiaki that showed me a way to get my PlayStation Network ID code just on some website.

I put it in my ID and it just spit out the code that I needed.

Was that so hard?

Why do I have to download some JavaScript off of a GitHub?

Why can't I just type it in and you just spit it back out at me?

Anyway, it works all right.

It's better than nothing, but it's a lot easier to get it to work on here than it would have been on a Steam Deck.

For example, the Ally controller just works.

I don't think the Steam Deck controller works with Chiaki without some configuration.

However, PlayStation Remote Streaming still kind of sucks.

It runs fine, but listen to that audio.

It's abysmal.

It seems worse in Chiaki on here than it does in the official Remote Play app on Android, and no amount of bit rate adjusting seemed to help.

This is only gonna work if you wanna play it on mute.

So I gave up on that and I just played Castlevania again.

That game's sick.

Forget all this, get yourself a GBA.

Both the Steam Deck and the Ally can play Game Pass games through streaming, although it's a little bit easier to get all of that to work on the Ally.

But only the Ally can do Game Pass games natively, meaning you can just download them and play them natively on the console.

You don't have to stream them.

So you can straight up download Forza with your Game Pass subscription.

If I wanted to play that on my Steam Deck, I'd have to buy it again.

So that is also influencing what I play on my Steam Deck versus the Ally.

I'm trying out Exo Primal on my Ally because of this, for better or for worse.

I loved getting emulation to work on my Steam Deck.

Emudeck was one of the easiest things in the world.

Now Emudeck is testing a Windows release specifically for the ROG Ally.

You just have to be one of their Patreon supporters to use it.

This was a major point in favor of the Steam Deck, but now you can just get it on either.

Using the desktop mode on a Steam Deck is, in my opinion, a pretty terrible experience.

But you can live your whole Steam Deck life without ever having to open that desktop mode.

On the ROG Ally, the Windows desktop is pretty much unavoidable.

You're gonna have to do some messing around with the Windows desktop, at least when you set the thing up.

And you're also gonna have to do some bullshit when installing certain games.

Plus, having full access to the Windows desktop is gonna kind of tempt you to just do all sorts of wacky stuff that is going to end up being frustrating eventually.

Like using Dropbox to sync all of your ROMs.

And then you can't reach the top of your Dropbox tab unless you raise the resolution.

It's very annoying.

It's a lot of little annoyances that eventually add up pretty quickly.

Ironically, one of the biggest draws to the ROG Ally is that you can straight up just use it as a desktop replacement.

I would never suggest getting an ROG Ally over a full-blown laptop.

Imagine doing your taxes on one of these things on a gaming handheld.

Imagine navigating your MySpace page with the thumbsticks.

But you know what?

I was on the Nerd Nest podcast a few weeks ago and Retro Game Court told me that he does just that.

I don't think he has a MySpace.

But he uses his Asus Ally as like his full-blown desktop.

He plugs it into one of those external GPUs.

And I kind of get it.

There's something about having all of your games and files and stuff all in one spot so you can use it both tethered and remotely however you want.

Sure, you could do that with a Steam Deck, but it's Linux.

Ew. Why does this suddenly not work anymore?

And also you can't really use an external GPU unless you wanna do a lot of finagling.

So when it comes down to it, the Steam Deck makes it a lot easier to just pick up and play.

The Asus Ally does try to give you that kind of experience and they did a pretty decent job with what they had.

The Armory Crate Launcher has gotten a lot better with some updates.

When you start the Ally, it boots right into that Armory Crate Launcher and it's very fast.

But you know, it's gotta boot into Windows first and that's a lot.

And then it's gotta boot into the Armory Crate Launcher, whereas the Steam Deck just has to boot into the regular.

Wait.

Wait, the Ally booted faster.

What?

But the big issue is that a lot of the games you're gonna wanna play on the Ally are gonna need to be downloaded either from a browser or from all sorts of various different launchers.

And that just isn't a seamless experience.

They tried to make a one, but that's largely a Windows problem.

You can play more on the Ally than you can on the Steam Deck but there's something magical about how the Steam Deck feels like a console and the Ally feels like a PC. So when people ask me which one is worth getting,

I usually hit them back with what type of games do you wanna play?

There's a chance some of the games that you're most interested in are not gonna run on Steam.

They're only available through different launchers.

You're gonna have to get them on Windows.

I think personally, the Steam Deck is my go-to for most games because that ease of use is just unmatched.

You turn it on, download the game and just start playing.

But there's a lot that it can't do.

If I wanna play my Game Pass games or anything that requires a separate launcher, I'll be reaching for my Ally.

But honestly, I'll probably just be reaching for my Game Boy.
