  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Australia is facing a serious problem: it is running out of space to dispose of its rubbish. While most people may not think about it, the issue of waste management is becoming increasingly urgent. If we ignore this problem, we may soon find ourselves living in a world overrun by garbage. The question arises - are we doing enough to recycle our waste? The answer, unfortunately, is no. People are not properly disposing of their waste, leading to a crisis waiting to happen. Shockingly, we are running out of room for rubbish. So, what can we do? It's not as simple as digging more holes in the ground; the issue goes beyond just finding space. We are running out of materials, and the carbon impacts of releasing methane from landfills are detrimental to the environment. To combat this problem, companies like Veolia are using AI technology to manage waste more efficiently. By analyzing data, AI can determine what is recyclable and separate it accordingly. However, even with AI, human intervention is still necessary in some cases, such as identifying unusual items in the recycling process. Julie, who has been sorting through recyclables for fourteen years, can attest to the vast array of items that end up in the recycling system. As the quantity of waste continues to grow, it is crucial for individuals to do their part and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, we risk being buried in a mountain of waste.
  • Subtitles section
  • For most of us, it's a case of out of sight, out of mind.
  • But the people who deal with our rubbish every day
  • say it's time for some serious trash talk
  • because it's a huge problem.
  • If we don't start dealing with this rubbish issue now
  • we're going to end up living in a tin.
  • Are people doing the right thing when it comes to recycling?
  • What are you seeing up there?
  • No, they're dying.
  • Phone call after phone and go
  • what do you do with this stuff?
  • Of course I'm concerned.
  • It's a crisis waiting to happen.
  • Would you believe we're running out of room for rubbish?
  • So here's a tip.
  • Do the right thing, because if we don't
  • we're all going to find ourselves in a great big pile of...
  • Sheesh, that's a lot of bin chickens,
  • We bin it and forget about it, but now we can't ignore it.
  • We're running out of room for our rubbish.
  • So, how hard is it to dig more holes in the ground to put our stuff?
  • It's not about that, it's about we're running out of materials
  • it's about the carbon impacts of releasing methane from landfills.
  • Veolia's Richard Kirkman designed this waste management site at Spring Farm in Sydney's west.
  • It shines a light on the materials
  • and depending on the type of light that comes back
  • it puffs it off into a different bin with a little bit of air,
  • We are using AI technology
  • to use all this data, to learn what's recyclable,
  • Wow, so AI can be good.
  • AI can be good.
  • Yeah.
  • But even the most advanced technology still needs a helping human hand,
  • This is the only piece where we need a manual intervention
  • trying to spot that really weird thing on the valve.
  • Julie's been sorting through our recyclables for fourteen years,
  • There's so much stuff in there.
  • Everything you can think of, it's in here.
  • If we find one microwave, we'll find it.
  • Sometimes you wonder how the stuff get in the yellow bins.
  • We end up with these saleable materials
  • saleable commodities, cardboard
  • paper, metals.
  • The rest goes to landfill
  • and that's filling up fast
  • especially in New South Wales.
  • There is only enough capacity left for about seven years.
  • So here we are, recycled.
  • Another one in the bin.
  • Another one in the bin.
  • But the right bin.
  • Correct.
  • Our former Attorney General and Mayor of Hornsby
  • Philip Ruddock, says we've reached a tipping point.
  • When we run out of the areas available to receive the waste
  • we're done.
  • Are we running out of landfill room in the next decade?
  • Well, that entirely depends
  • how much stuff we put in the holes
  • that we've got left,
  • Richard Kirkman says we can all do our bit.
  • It's a supply chain of material.
  • So we design things differently so they are recyclable.
  • When they're recyclable
  • a little logo on it, confirm it's recyclable
  • and then we'll invest in new equipment to make sure we're sorting all this product out
  • and then people that make things buy this back
  • and put it into new products.
  • If all those things happen
  • we'll have a complete circular economy of materials
  • and we won't need to worry about landfill.
  • Take this empty jar of hand cream.
  • The lid is recyclable, but the base isn't.
  • People have probably got one of these jars in their house right now
  • and it's probably near empty,
  • What should they do with it?
  • Well, they should put it in the non recycling bin.
  • And what about plastic bottle lids?
  • I won't care.
  • I don't do it with a cap on.
  • You're meant to.
  • Go on.
  • What do you do?
  • Put it on.
  • Squeeze the air out.
  • Put it on.
  • Oh, strike me pink.
  • If the lids are left off
  • they will just fall through the cracks in the machines
  • and they'll go to landfill.
  • If they're left on, they'll go with these bottles to a recycling plant
  • where there's lots of lids,
  • And if we've got a lot of lids
  • we can make a bale of lids
  • and then we can process them into new stuff.
  • Whether we're doing the right or wrong thing
  • state governments are slugging us regardless.
  • The government's putting its hand in people's rubbish bins
  • and taxing people's rubbish,
  • Sydney's Fairfield Mayor Frank Carboni says the New South Wales Government has collected eight hundred million dollars in waste levies from residents over the past five years,
  • But it's spent little on landfill solutions.
  • It's meant to be for recycling
  • it's meant to be for education
  • and it's meant to be to improve recycling rates in our community.
  • Seventy three year old rubbish sorter
  • Julie, wishes to convey this message.
  • Please, just think about it a little bit now.
  • Do the right thing.
  • Do the bloody right thing.
  • Sorry, I didn't switch it on.
  • Do the right thing.
