Today we're playing a hundred days of Factorio in a death world.

The objective is to survive, build a factory, and launch a rocket into outer space.

A feat I had never accomplished in Factorio, here to fourth.

I hadn't played Factorio in a while since I'd built up too much trauma since my last death world where we were all horribly killed.

We don't talk about that base anymore.

Until the other day, I was on Reddit, and I discovered this new map seed for a more, um, a more forgiving start.

Instead of being surrounded on all sides, it's a peninsula with only one small connection to the mainland on the bottom.

Still, even with increased mineral richness, there's not really a lot of area to expand to, so I did decide to give it a try again.

And so I spent the last four days, uh, no really, four days sitting in a room with thirty six hours of gameplay later and now I've finally completed the challenge.

As mentioned, this run will be a death world and that means constant pressure, rapid biter evolution, and limited time.

So it started on the first day.

The first day, I crash landed from outer space, then deconstructed the components of my ship for iron plates, chopped down a few trees for wood, and mined a few rocks for some fast stone and coal, all to begin fueling my burner miners and ovens.

With my smelting setup begun, the first day drew to a close.

Day two, I explored, worked on my smelting setup, and established power by pumping water from the north into a boiler for my steam engine.

Next, it's on to electricity, power lines, and electric coal miners.

But by now, it's unfortunately already too late, since I'd already spread so much pollution to the biter nest to the southeast.

Not good.

Day three drew to an end.

On day four, I added electric miners for iron and copper and started lining up my smelting columns.

By day five, I had produced red science, researched the logistics, and then started on the smelting column in full effect.

The first iron and copper plates produced.

Belts.

Built.

Here begins my main bus.

Only problem with it was that I was rushing so much for fear of attack that I never expanded the bus.

A fact which would come back to haunt me the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, and the next Day six.

Gears.

Red science.

Built.

Automated.

Day seven.

Copper wire.

Green electrical chips.

And finally a place to relocate all my red science production.

Now you might be sitting there and thinking to yourself, this base looks

Wrong.

That's true, but I'd never beaten Factorio, so I didn't know how much room to leave for my main bus.

This is not enough room.

We'll address this at a later time.

But for now, day eight.

Expanding.

Smelting.

Miners.

And steam engines to supply voltage.

And of course at last, the manufacturing of ammo to repel the incoming biter attacks.

By sunrise on day nine, the first turret is built, and our defenses are automated.

How hadn't we been attacked yet?

I don't know, it could have been that we lowered our pollution early, but I think that the real answer here is luck.

Day ten, we were attacked.

Yep, even my oven walls weren't enough to deter them.

A pretty light attack though, not too much damage.

By day eleven we were producing inserter arms and green science.

Now defenses, production, and research were all automated.

Fortunately, the pollution had spread to only one or two biter nests, giving me a lot more time than usual to prepare.

Though by day twelve we started scaling up.

Scale the smelting.

Scale the assemblers.

Scale the power.

leave nothing unscaleable, and procrastinate defenses by building, um, just more ovens outside the base.

At last we built a turret assembler to further automate defenses for bugs.

From there on day thirteen it's off to stone mining, power production, and finishing off the day by repelling a large attack of lowly, unevolved biters.

From there I sensed an opening, a gap in the defense.

I ran south to one of their bases to poop out turrets onto the biter nests and zerg them before they could outzerg me.

Success!

A splendiferous day, and honestly the first victory.

And so, filled with courage by the sudden boon of security, by the end of day fourteen, it's off with more turrets to poop out onto more of them, to the northwest of our factory.

With that taken care of, we're now actually safe for the first time, and we can focus on our factory, which is growing, but the pollution now isn't actually touching anyone anymore.

Day fifteen, brick production.

Day sixteen, wall production.

Then from days seventeen to twenty, I circumnavigated the plin... pinin...

Eh.

Peninsula.

I circumnavigated the peninsula and destroyed all the biter nests to the west, north, east, and south.

All just before the biters could evolve.

That work cut off the single tiny opening to the south where the peninsula met the mainland with walls and turrets.

Days twenty one to twenty four.

It's time to complete some scouting.

Power poles and radars placed all over the island to obtain vision of our surroundings.

As well as using turrets to exterminate the last of the biter nests.

The peninsula now cleared, and the exit cut off.

It's time to return to our factory to focus, before the biters can evolve and take down our puny gun turrets to the south.

Day twenty five.

Expand everything.

Expand the smelters.

Expand the circuit production.

Then days twenty six and twenty seven.

It's off to the north to use pump jacks to extract crude oil from the ground.

Day twenty eight and twenty nine.

Back south to the base to grow our science production.

Then red ammo, grenades, and grey science for military research.

By day thirty, this is starting to look and feel like we're playing real Factorio.

Except, um, except way more disorganized.

But who cares, keep going anyway.

Science.

And by day thirty one, we're finally producing engines for our future flamethrowers.

And we're going to need them if we're going to deal with the evolving biters.

So on day thirty two, we can finally place these turrets in the south to deal with the biter problem once and for all.

For now.

By day thirty three, our procrastination has come to an end.

It's time to turn our gaze toward production.

Now we embark upon the cerebral journey that is Factorio.

A humbling, existential quest toward apotheosis making our way up the research ladder.

We research sulfur production, mining productivity, and of course, explosives.

Build an oil refinery to process the crude oil into petroleum, drag over water and make the petroleum into sulfur and plastic.

Day thirty six, it's finally on to red circuit production and the advent of blue science research packs.

There was a lot of work, but it's all enough to speed through all the old research and make our way up the production chain.

Days thirty seven to forty, I honestly forgot what I did.

Just more of everything.

It all culminated in the production of landfill.

And unfortunately, despite how defensible the southern end of my peninsula was, I'd have to stretch out onto more of the mainland, since the first resource I'd run out of would be iron.

Even with increased richness, two million would run out, and fast.

And if I connected a land bridge at the northeast, there was a patch of ninety four million iron on the northeast coast above the peninsula.

So on day forty two, I stretched up power poles north and connected all my oil pipes to prepare for the next site of my defense.

An extremely narrow land bridge I filled in over the water on the north side with landfill.

This would open the floodgates.

Now I'd have a two front war on my hands, one in the south and a new front in the north.

My flamethrowers and walls could manage it for a while, but if I didn't manage to secure the huge iron patch soon, I feared I'd need much, much stronger weapons to clear out the biters later on when they would evolve.

And so it was a race against time.

But small mistakes can prove extremely costly.

I returned to the factory, but upon further analysis, realized I had made the amateurish mistake of leaving too little room for my main bus.

So from days forty three to fifty, I had to awkwardly reroute all of the production on the left side of the bus all the way back to the right side.

And that honestly took forever and wasn't very fun at all.

It takes longer if you have to come back and fix your old mistakes than if you just plan right the first time.

And since I play Deathworld almost exclusively when I play Factorio, I apply almost no scalable geometric principles, usually, when I build my base.

So this culminated in watching a bunch of Nihlaus and Trupin videos to understand the bus.

You always learn a lot every time you play Factorio, but none of it gets applied until your next playthrough.

Still, I do like to save these old factory save files since they're fun to come back to and understand the way your mind develops and its organizational principles through trial and error.

An imprint of your planning personality.

My operation started to speed up.

Days fifty one and onward, the attacks battered our north and south borders.

Our flamethrowers would have an edge for a while, but eventually, I'd be locked in with only the resources I'd already claimed if I didn't act fast.

I would have to expand.

So on day fifty two, I built a tank to blitz the nests inhabiting the rich iron deposits to the northeast.

The next step would involve trains.

So, days of fifty three to fifty five, I used hand grenades to destroy all the forests and clear the way to lay tracks from my mining setup all the way to the larger iron deposit north of us.

Days fifty six to fifty seven, I prepared all the cargo unloading boxes and arms at my base, and then I drove the train up north manually to use dynamite to blow up all the cliffs and clear a path for the train.

Days fifty eight to sixty seven, I focused on securing a new base around the iron deposit.

automating train departures, loading and unloading, running power lines from the main base to the iron outpost to supply electricity from our grid, and building walls and laser turrets to repel biter invasions on the outpost itself.

It was all time consuming and tested our main base to the utmost of its production capacity.

Automatically assembling laser turrets was expensive, but we'd need them to keep the remote base safe.

Like all things in Factorio, automation was paramount.

But despite all the planning, unfortunately, on day sixty eight, it all fell apart.

Out of nowhere, from the safety of my main base, all I could do was listen to the hazard signals.

The outpost was destroyed.

Something or another along the way had found a weak point and breached the walls.

And by the time it was too late already, all the radars were offline.

A sound defeat.

So I'd have to cut my losses.

Just a sunk cost.

I'd have to keep focusing now on my main base to develop better technology to retake that outpost with whatever remaining iron I had left in my spawn.

And if I failed, I'd just die.

So I resigned to my fate, and in an extinction burst from days sixty nine to seventy five, I used my time to finish fluid processing, automate the manufacturing of blue processing units, and research robotics.

opening the way to logistics and exponentially increased output.

Finally, on day seventy six, I built the Roboport, which is honestly one of the most magical feelings you can get from this game.

The Roboport is a splendiferous hub for your logistics and construction bots, aka flying robot servants.

At last,

Apotheosis.

Now I can construct anything with my mind.

All you need to do is lay the plans, and the robots will make it so.

Day seventy seven to eighty.

I couldn't think of anything useful for the robots to create fast enough, so I assigned them the long, excruciating, and pointless task of covering the entire factory floor with cobblestone.

A Sisyphean task which will take them weeks to complete.

This makes me feel productive, and honestly justified.

Days of the years of the year.

As I set out automating the production of construction and logistics bots, hope began to set in.

There's something honestly kind of therapeutic about watching your bots come to life and complete your work and tasks for you.

With that all done, on day of the year, I revisited the site of the iron mine.

Nothing, aside from the ruins of a few walls.

Not until I had returned soon.

After all, my life, and more importantly, perhaps my factory, depended upon reclaiming it.

All this effort culminated on day ninety three, when I finally began the production of purple science packs.

Purpler than anything that had come before it, but whose inputs are honestly far too ridiculous even to recount.

But I will anyway.

You need ovens, literally, electrical ovens and train tracks to manufacture these Erlenmeyer flasks.

It's just silly after a while.

But goofy ingredients or not, it all came to a pretty satisfying and worthwhile head at day ninety eight, and I finally returned to the north, to aggro a few more biters, and ultimately re stake my claims on the northern lands, which I now seized with a hard rock wall perimeter.

over and around all along the train tracks, and with power lines and laser turrets to boot.

This time I could come back with full force.

This time, I would reclaim the iron deposit permanently, or die trying.

All this led up to days ninety nine and one hundred, when I finally placed laser turrets and ran crude oil for flamethrowers along the northern perimeter.

all up the wall until the iron deposit.

Secure, but for how long?

It takes a lot longer than that, though, to beat Factorio, so I guess I'll save the next part for later.
