  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In recent weeks, a number of American advertisers have pulled their ads from the social media platform NowX due to concerns over Elon Musk's alleged tolerance for anti-Semitic and extremist content. Now, a CBC News investigation has revealed that Canadian advertisers are also starting to follow suit. The investigation, led by Jonathan Monpetit, aimed to determine whether NowX was monetizing accounts of extremists and placing ads from Canadian companies in the accounts of individuals promoting hate speech and conspiracy theories. The investigation revealed that several well-known brands, such as Samsung Canada and Bell Media, had their ads appearing alongside such content. Despite attempts to reach out to Samsung Canada, no response was received. B'nai B'rith, on the other hand, acknowledged the risks associated with having their ads appear alongside problematic content. This investigation sheds light on the growing concerns over the presence of extremist and anti-Semitic content on NowX and the involvement of advertisers in supporting such content.

  • Well, it's no secret the platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been in turmoil since Elon Musk took over the helm of the company.
  • The social media site NowX has seen many advertisers in the United States leave in the past few weeks over Musk's apparent tolerance for anti Semitic and extremist content.
  • Well, now a CBC News investigation finds Canadian advertisers are starting to make the move as well.
  • Jonathan Monpetit has been leading the investigation.
  • He's live with us from Montreal this morning.
  • Good to see you, Jonathan, with more on your reporting.
  • Tell us about this investigation.
  • When you looked at Canadian companies, what did you find?
  • Well, so we wanted to see whether X was monetizing accounts of extremists, and more specifically, we wanted to see whether the platform was placing ads of Canadian companies
  • in the accounts of anti Semites, white supremacists, conspiracists and the like.
  • And indeed, what we found is that several recognizable brands had ads appearing in accounts like these.
  • So for example, we found ads for Samsung Canada.
  • appearing in an account that spreads Islamophobic and anti Semitic conspiracy theories.
  • We found a B'nai B'rith ad appearing in the feed of Richard Spencer.
  • He's a well known white nationalist in the United States.
  • And we found ads for a Bell Media company in the feed of a far right fitness leader who has a tattoo of a symbol that's been linked to neo Nazi groups.
  • When you reached out to those companies and organizations, as I know you did, Jonathan, what did they tell you?
  • What do they have to say?
  • Well, despite several attempts to reach Samsung Canada, no one responded to us.
  • B'nai B'rith said that, in effect, that they accepted the risks of having ads appear alongside problematic content.
  • For them, the benefits of being on social media outweighed the downsides.
  • But Bell Media and other companies we spoke to said they were quite surprised to find their ads in these kinds of accounts.
  • And as a result, they are suspending their advertising campaigns on X. They said they had specifically asked X not to place their ads alongside extremist content.
  • Polling firm Angus Reid, which had an ad appear in one of these accounts, said that in this case, quote, these controls appear to have failed.
  • Bell Media, in a statement to us, said, this situation is unacceptable.
  • As a result, we have interrupted Bell Media advertising campaigns on X. And they said that decision applies to advertising in both French and English.
  • So when you say some companies, some agencies see it as a fail, how did it happen in this way, Jonathan?
  • but we spoke to an expert in far right extremism whose group has worked in the past with Twitter.
  • And she mentioned to us that shortly after taking over the company last year, Elon Musk dismantled many of the content moderation systems in place.
  • And while at the same time, allowing many controversial accounts back onto the platform.
  • So now compared to other social media companies, X has few safeguards to protect
  • brands from extremist content.
  • Here's Wendy Villa, co founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism.
  • We have systems in place where we have people in different parts of the world that we talk to at each of the companies.
  • You know, they have trust and safety teams.
  • They have somebody who specializes, say, in dangerous orgs, or bullying and harassment, or anti injury.
  • So there are some systems in place.
  • There are no systems in place at Twitter.
  • there are none.
  • Just one final point, Heather.
  • Advertising counts for the vast majority of Twitter's revenues or X's revenues.
  • If advertisers continue to leave, it could pose a real threat to the financial viability of the company.
  • Jonathan, thank you very much.
  • Jonathan Monpetit from Montreal.
  • And there is a lot more in Jonathan's investigation in a piece that's up online this morning.
