  • So it feels like it's been forever, but Invincible Season Two has come and gone.
  • And I don't know about you guys, but it feels like way less people are talking about this one when compared to Season One.
  • I think a lot of this is due to the fact that for some insane reason, they decided to split the season in two parts.
  • And this was a decision that everybody on planet Earth thinks is really stupid.
  • Four episodes just isn't a lot, even if they are an hour long.
  • Getting invested into a show only to have it go on hiatus after just four weeks is kind of brutal.
  • And I think this bizarre release schedule really killed some of the momentum and hype for a lot of people.
  • Most of the people I know who watched it just waited until it was all released anyway.
  • I normally like to get these videos out a little sooner, but most of the people I know haven't even finished the show yet.
  • I don't know why they did this, they claimed that it was to generate hype, but I think it did the opposite.
  • I can only hope that the overall negative reception of this choice will get them to reconsider their release schedule for the next season.
  • But thankfully, once I did get around to watching the show, I was pleased to discover that it's still really good.
  • And I think Invincible is officially the closest thing that we will get to American Shonen since, like, Avatar The Last Airbender.
  • And I think that this season improves a lot of things that I complained about in season one.
  • In my last review, I had the minor complaint that the Omni Man plotline was far and above way more interesting than the other subplots, but here I think the opposite's actually true.
  • I think the side characters are the highlight this season.
  • We have Rex, a character that I thought absolutely nothing of in season one, and here he became one of my favorites.
  • His story takes him in a direction that I think is really interesting and leaves a lot of room for more development later on.
  • Debbie is probably my number one favorite character of this season, and I like how we can see a more realistic take on what the life of a superhero spouse would be like.
  • Hell, even Donald has a good story arc this season.
  • I really think every single side character is done really well, at least the ones that survive.
  • And they all have side plots that kept me watching the show.
  • However, I can't really say the same for Mark.
  • I don't think Mark is done badly in this season at all.
  • I think his character arc works.
  • But my problem is that his arc takes the entire season and it mostly consists of him being like,
  • Oh man, being a superhero is really hard, and having a girlfriend is also really hard.
  • And that's fine, but it is the exact same problem he was dealing with in season one.
  • I was really invested in Mark when his conflict had to do with his dad, or his duty to the planet, or his hesitance to kill people.
  • But whenever he started having issues with college and his girlfriend, I was way less interested.
  • I don't know, I just don't understand why he wants to go to college so bad.
  • Like, you got other shit to do, man.
  • I just think the Amber stuff is really drawn out in this season.
  • Like, it doesn't take a genius to realize where this conflict is going to lead.
  • So it feels like it was stretched out a little too much.
  • There are episodes that don't really focus on Mark that much, and they ended up being my favorite in the show.
  • All the other plot lines are really cool.
  • They flesh out the world and the characters in ways that I really wanted to see.
  • And then it cuts back to Mark trying to date his girlfriend, and it kind of killed my excitement sometimes.
  • Though I will say Amber as a character is greatly improved.
  • I do think that the writers took note of how disliked she was from the last season because she is exceedingly reasonable in this season.
  • She's almost like too reasonable.
  • Like you can get mad at Mark a little bit.
  • It's almost like she's thinking, oh, I can't get too upset at Mark or else the fans are going to get mad at me again.
  • And I honestly do like the resolution of Mark and Amber's conflict.
  • I think it's handled in a very realistic way.
  • I just think it's lame that it took almost the whole show to get to that point.
  • I do also have a few nitpicky things that don't really ruin the show, but they're still aspects that I couldn't stop thinking about.
  • Firstly, they gotta hire more voice actors.
  • Now I will say, every single performance in this show is great.
  • This is the rare case of an animated series being voiced by mostly all celebrities, and it's actually really good.
  • Like, everybody is giving it their all.
  • I always say that Seth Rogen, while a good actor when he wants to be, is still really distracting a lot of the time, but I think his performance as Alan is amazing.
  • It adds so much texture to the character.
  • I cannot imagine anybody else voicing him.
  • Like, there's a reason why he's most people's favorite character in the season.
  • Steven Yeun never misses, and I can't imagine a single human being on earth voicing Mark as well as he does.
  • And of course, I think it's about time that we all agree that JK Simmons is as good at voice acting as he is on the silver screen.
  • I started reading the comic after I finished this show, and I hear every single voice from the show in my head while I'm reading it.
  • That's how solid the cast is.
  • But when it comes to the side characters and extras, they're usually voiced by, like, the same three people, and it can be really distracting.
  • I think Grey Delisle voices, like, ten side characters in this season.
  • And the thing is, she's not doing a bad job, but she has an iconic voice, so it's really distracting when every woman in the show sounds like Azula or Mandy.
  • I know the show is doing everything it can with the budget that it's given, but please, just hire, like, two more people.
  • It's making me, like, irrationally annoyed.
  • I know most people don't notice stuff like this and they don't care, but I have to bring it up because I can't get over it.
  • Also, another nitpick, but I'd like if the action scenes
  • had a little more sauce.
  • Now listen, it's worth noting that the animation in this season has improved a lot.
  • There's some moments where it can go back to looking a little janky, but overall I think it's a vast improvement over season one.
  • And I can only hope it will continue to improve as the show keeps getting more popular.
  • But I kind of get tired of the Man of Steel style of fight scenes that Mark gets.
  • Viltrumite on Viltrumite combat mostly consists of two people slamming into each other and
  • I don't know.
  • I just kinda want something a little different.
  • I get that Invincible has a very simple set of superpowers, and anybody who isn't Mark usually does get cooler fight scenes.
  • For instance, I watched the Adam Eve special before I binged season two, and the action in that was really dynamic.
  • You can tell they put a lot of work into it.
  • So I don't know, I would just like a little more of that for Mark's fight scenes because he is the main character.
  • He does the most fighting.
  • I don't know, I think maybe X Men Ninety Seven is spoiling me a little bit because the action in that show is unparalleled.
  • But again, this is a nitpick.
  • It doesn't kill the season for me.
  • It's just a personal thing.
  • I will say that I do think I was much more emotionally invested in this season when compared to the last one.
  • I really enjoy a superhero show where all the characters are miserable all the time.
  • And I think this series does a great job of capturing the realistic trauma that comes with living in a world of superheroes without relying on the cynical tone that other edgy superhero media tends to rely on.
  • Like, I really like the boys, but I think that edgy cynicism can kind of turn people off sometimes.
  • Invincible can be really bleak, but it's always undercut with a little bit of hope and optimism, and I think that's what keeps it engaging.
  • And as before, I am desperately awaiting that next season.
  • Just don't split the season in half.
  • That was stupid.
  • Never do that again.
  • Eight out of ten.
