In this video, I will attempt to drive a Formula 1 car upside down on the ceiling of a tunnel. This challenge has been talked about for years, but no one has ever accomplished it. Formula 1 cars are known to generate double their weight in downforce at high speeds, and driving upside down is the ultimate demonstration of this phenomenon. Despite how ridiculous it may sound, myself and a team of engineers have been working on this project for the past few years, and we have determined that it is indeed possible. We have invested a significant amount of money in designing the car, planning the tunnel, and gathering wind tunnel data. We refer to this project as 'project inversion'. In this article, I will provide an overview of how this remarkable project came to be, the challenges we faced, our current progress, and our future plans. While cars have previously been driven upside down using centripetal force and momentum, our goal is to drive inverted for more than five seconds solely by utilizing organic aerodynamic forces. This means we aim to achieve the feat using the aerodynamics of a Formula 1 car, rather than relying on external mechanisms like fans. Despite numerous discussions in the motorsport community, this challenge has never been successfully completed. Can a Formula 1 car truly drive upside down in a tunnel? The answer is a resounding yes.

I'm actually going to drive a Formula 1 car upside down on the ceiling of a tunnel, a challenge that's been spoken about for decades but never completed.

It's said that Formula 1 cars create double their weight in downforce at 130 miles an hour, and this is the ultimate way to show it off.

Now, hold on a second.

I know that that sounds absolutely ridiculous, but yes, me and a team of engineers and many other people have been working on this project for a couple of years already, and we've found out that it's all 100% possible.

We've already spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on the car designs, the tunnel plans, and all of the wind tunnel data to make it happen, and we call it project inversion.

Let me explain how this incredible project got started, all of the problems we've had to overcome, where we're up to, and where we're going.

First, let me lay out what we're actually trying to do because cars have already driven upside down, but it's always been for fractions of a second and done using centripetal force, using momentum rather than using the aerodynamics of the Formula 1 type car.

The goal is to drive inverted upside down using only organic aerodynamic force for more than five seconds.

I say organic because, for example, the McMurtry fan car could likely also drive upside down, but that's basically using two fans that suck the car to the ground, not proper organic aero like we see in Formula 1. It's a challenge that's been spoken about in motorsport for years.

Is it true that you can drive that car upside down in the tunnel?

I've heard this said many times, can you?

Can a Formula 1 car drive on the ceiling of a tunnel?

The answer is yes.

That's true, although there are many, many issues with making that happen, which I'll be going over in this video and the following four videos in this project inversion series.

First problem, where do we get an F1 car?

Actually, is an F1 car even the right thing to use?

Well, as it turns out, not really.

There are two significant problems with using an F1 car for this project.

The first issue is weight.

An F1 car does produce more than enough downforce to cover its weight.

They're actually generating about 4,000 kilograms of downforce at maximum speed.

They have got a little bit fat over the years, and they now weigh about 798 kilograms.

That's 1,760 pounds if you're in the US. Of course, that does mean that an F1's aero is enough to drive it upside down, but you'd have to be going really fast.

A heavy car and high speed causes a lot of issues.

More load on the structure, more power needed, a longer run-up, and a longer tunnel.

It actually makes everything more complicated.

We want to do this at the slowest speed possible.

Another problem with the speed is the downforce doesn't just need to cover the weight of the car.

It needs to cover the weight of the car and then some for traction, and of course, a bit of safety margin.

Just imagine if you didn't have that safety margin and you've got a gust of tailwind.

That's why we need a healthy margin of extra downforce.

Actually, the aim is to produce double the car's weight in downforce in order to drive upside down in the real world.

A modern F1 car would need to be traveling at about 130 miles an hour or 210 kilometers an hour to do this.

Therefore, the tunnel would need to be very long.

The tunnel and its length is a big issue, but more on that later.

Second issue with an F1 car is the engine, or rather the fluids in the engine.

Water, oil, and fuel are difficult enough to manage when a car is pulling 5G on a racetrack.

Just imagine how they slosh around when you're going through Maggots, Becketts, and Chapel.

When an engine is turned upside down, things get way more difficult.

The main issue here is the engine oil.

Basically, the oil comes out of the oil tank and is fed to the crank, cams, and under the pistons.

Before it falls down to the bottom of the engine, it's scavenged and then fed back to the oil tank through the radiator.

Just imagine this engine being upside down.

The oil is sprayed where it needs to go and then can't run back to the bottom of the engine, or in this case, the top.

Instead, the oil sits under the pistons.

The oil would then leak down the side of the pistons into the combustion chamber before the piston then tried to compress it.

With oil being oil and not able to be compressed, the engine would then explode.

The car would then lose power before losing speed and downforce, and well, you can guess the rest.

Internal combustion engines are probably not the one, but more on the solution a bit later.

By this point, I was thinking that we need a car that's really light and produces a load of downforce at lower speeds than F1. Obviously, it's technically possible to build a car specifically for this goal,

But it would be much easier if we could just adapt an existing car.

Then I thought about hill climbs.

Hill climbs are incredible.

Drivers and engineers figuring out how to get to the top of a hill as fast as possible.

Think Pike's Peak in the US or Shelsley Walsh in the UK. Hill climbs are typically tight and twisty and on narrow ribbons of track.

The perfect recipe to build a lightweight high downforce Formula car.

That's when I came across this, the Empire Wraith.

It's got massive aero at low speeds.

Just look at the diffuser.

Just look at the wings.

It's basically a big aerodynamic device.

The most impressive thing about this car is that it weighs just 311 kilograms.

That's 685 pounds.

It's more than two and a half times lighter than a Formula One car.

Remember, lighter is really good.

It means slower speeds, more time upside down, and generally less danger.

I started Googling around about this car and found a name I recognized, Willem Toewij.

He was the gent who designed this car and his CV is quite impressive.

Head of aerodynamics at Benetton during the Schumacher years, head of aerodynamics at Ferrari from 95 to 99, head of aerodynamics at Sauber, and the list goes on.

Now he inspires the next generation of engineers at the University of Bolton.

Anyway, it's an understatement to say Willem knows his stuff.

Willem was the guy.

I went over to LinkedIn and sent a random message.

At this point, I just wanted to know if the Empire Wraith produced enough downforce to do what we wanted.

To my surprise, Willem got back to me later that day and said that running a Formula car inverted was actually a piece of cake, aerodynamically speaking, which was music to my ears.

He also said that the consequences of failure could be quite serious, which is fair enough, I suppose.

Of course, we did look at other options, but decided that the Empire Wraith was the car.

As Willem was the designer, he knew the car in detail and reckoned he could get even more downforce out of it, which he did indeed go on to do, which I'm going to detail in a later video along with the whole design process.

Broadly speaking, we knew that the car would work, but the next issue was the tunnel.

How long did the tunnel need to be?

Can you even hire a tunnel?

Would the surface be too bumpy?

Surprisingly, I've never built a tunnel.

I also don't know a whole lot about tunnels, but as it happens, a good friend of mine loves tunnels.

He's a senior project manager in civil engineering.

He went off to do some research and found it is actually possible to hire a tunnel.

There are a few around the world that are the right length and about the right diameter.

There's actually a 2.7 kilometer long tunnel that you can hire here in the UK. It's called Catesby Tunnel and it's already used for vehicle testing.

The surface and environmental conditions are consistent, which makes it great for testing aerodynamics.

It seemed like a really good option, but the problem in our use case is that we need the car's downforce to remain really consistent so that we're safe when we're driving up the side of the tunnel and when we're upside down.

If you think about a road car tunnel, the bottom of the board hole is flat, meaning that driving up the point at which the road and wall meet is going to be near to impossible.

Even if the tunnel had some kind of liner, imagine an internal surface to smooth out the road to wall section.

The difference in curvature as you drive up the wall is going to play havoc with the aerodynamics.

The floor and diffuser of the car create a big chunk of the downforce and the floor and the diffuser work best when they're a very specific distance from the ground.

That's why ground effect F1 cars are very sensitive to pitch change and why we see the current generation of ground effect F1 cars use less curb than they did before.

The other issue with a normal tunnel is that the ceiling just isn't that smooth and definitely not smooth enough to drive an aerodynamically sensitive car along.

We'd need to remove all of the lighting and the electrical gubbins on the ceiling, which would still likely be too bumpy.

We'd then need some kind of hanging liner, which even if you somehow got the curvature exactly right, would take a long time to get level and also cost a fortune.

We also want this thing to be a spectacle, something that people can watch and something that's going to inspire the next generation of engineers.

Tunnels being tunnels with no open sides just aren't the best thing to watch a car drive through.

All of this being considered, we decided it was better to just build our own.

This is where things start to get even more complicated.

Adapting a car is one thing, but building a tunnel is quite another.

The vision was simple, a C-shaped tunnel without a side so that you could see a car driving all the way along it and one where the curvature was consistent bottom to top.

That way, Willem was happy and we're less likely to have a monumental shunt.

My civil engineering mate went out to Expedition Engineering, structural engineering experts who've created some incredible projects.

A couple of examples are the Infinity Bridge in Stockton and the Velodrome in London.

The team at Expedition were really excited by the project and agreed to start work on designing our own tunnel.

As the car and tunnel are so mutually important to each other, Willem and Andy created some initial drawings of the concept, as well as figuring out roughly how long and wide the tunnel needed to be.

For us to be upside down for more than five seconds at the speed required to create enough downforce, the tunnel would need to be about 600 meters long.

The width or rather the diameter of tunnel was the bigger challenge.

All things being perfect from an aerodynamic point of view, the ground beneath our cast floor would be flat.

That way, the floor and diffuser are the perfect distance away from the ground and so can create the maximum downforce possible.

However, the sides of tunnels aren't flat.

Of course, they need to curve.

The less curves you make a tunnel's wall, the bigger it's going to be.

Remember, we're making a tunnel ourselves.

The bigger the diameter, the more expensive the tunnel.

Put simply, we need to make the tunnel's diameter big enough to consistently create enough downforce not to crash, but small enough so that we're within a reasonable budget.

There was a load of work that went into this, but basically, Willem did lots of maths and decided that a 7.5-meter diameter tunnel was the sweet spot.

That's still big.

That's 24 feet tall.

The concept then went off to Expedition, who looked at all the options to create a tunnel like this, which surprisingly hasn't been done before.

Then they came back to us with a few designs.

Now, one of the most surprising things about the tunnel's design was that the load of the car driving down it wasn't the main concern.

It was the load of the wind with the C-section basically acting like a huge sail.

Now, this project has already cost hundreds of thousands of pounds in research.

It goes without saying that adapting a car like this and building your own tunnel also isn't cheap.

That's where we're up to right now.

We have the car and tunnel designs ready to build, but we're looking for partners to make this incredible, crazy, and inspirational project happen.

There's so much interesting design and engineering that's already gone into this project that I'm going to share.

I haven't even mentioned how we're going to power the car, how much it's all going to cost, and who's going to drive it.
