Ah, the mountaintop, back again after being sunset all those years ago.

There's been a lot of extra research and attention given to the mountaintop this time around by the community to see where this thing really stacks up in the meta.

But one of my favorite things about the mountaintop is that there is no one specific role that I think people should be looking for if you're just looking to get a mountaintop for your collection.

So, let's talk about the mountaintop.

First, let's discuss the minor perks because they do actually matter a little bit here.

A lot of good work has already been put into this topic by the community at large, so instead of going over all of the math, I'm just gonna tell you the best way to optimize your damage and that is by getting hard launch.

and implosion rounds OR spike grenades.

I say OR because the difference between implosion and spike is essentially nothing in terms of the damage numbers, it might as well be a rounding error.

If you can only get one of the two, it's better to get spike or implosion rounds versus only getting hard launch, but the difference between only hard launch and only spike

is pretty small, couple percentage points.

The worst case scenario is not getting hard launch, nor spike, nor implosion rounds.

In this very short example, I shoot this boss with the most optimal setup of hard launch and implosion and then with the least optimal setup of...

None of those.

And the damage difference is quite noticeable, almost sixty two thousand damage optimally to fifty five thousand damage not optimally and over ten percent difference.

You can expect any rolls in between these two extremes to give you damage approximately in the middle.

Normally, I tend to tell people, the average player, don't get too caught up in these minor perks, especially in PvE, as they tend to not really matter in the grand scheme compared to the major perks.

In this case, they do matter a little bit more than normal because there is a much more direct impact on your damage, pun intended, F you.

However, this is something that I will still tell the average player to not worry too much about if you don't have a ton of time to go grind out roles.

If you find the role that you want and you're good with that, don't sweat it.

But for the grinders out there who want to find the most optimal damage setup, that's what you gotta do.

Speaking of damage, let's talk about sustained damage real quick because back when this thing was meta, we lived in a much different world than we do today.

Auto loading Wells of Radiance were DOMINATING PvE, so this weapon was not only a fantastic single target weapon, but also sustained.

Nowadays, not as much.

In fact, the results were so conclusive that I'm gonna spare you a lot of the details here yet again and just tell you that compared to the more meta sustained weapon options, stuff like Controlled Burst,

fusion rifles or heritage or snipers, Mountaintop falls pretty far behind and it's not gonna be my first priority when it comes to sustain DPS requirements.

That's not to say that in some more advanced damage strategies that it doesn't have a place, stuff where you need to do

weapon rotations, maybe activating bait and switch, because it does have a place there.

I have an auto loading Vorpal and an auto loading Recombination roll that I'm taking into final shape, just as examples.

Before we get into perk rolls, a reminder that Mountaintop doesn't really have a ton of self damage and that you can rocket jump with it.

I'm sure there's gonna be some new movement tech that people are gonna be trying to find, especially in combination with Eager Edge, but for the non movement pilled crowd out there, this basically means it's gonna be a lot harder to blow yourself up with Mountaintop, which is pretty good.

So, let's talk about some perk rolls, what I've been liking and what I think you can avoid bothering with.

I have mainly been playing with two weapon rolls, Ambitious Assassin one for all and Autoloading Recombination.

The Ambitious one for all roll is for when I know that I want to play with this grenade launcher a bit more freely, being able to shoot as many shots as I want and maximizing that potential.

While it does work in Legend Onslaught, it starts to fall off in the second half, so I'd probably stick to stuff that's a little bit easier, a little more casual, as if you start to require like, three, four, five or more shots to kill some of this stuff, which you will, you'll get overwhelmed.

For more casual stuff, it's pretty good.

I prefer Ambitious Assassin over things like Demolitionist, Lead from Gold, auto loading and Overflow.

Demolitionist obviously has a ton of potential if you are specced specifically to take advantage of it, which is to say, you're throwing a lot of grenades.

any sort of grapple based build, something where you can be using your grapple very frequently, I can understand you wanting demo, or maybe you're a Verity's Brow enjoyer, maybe you're even just getting a lot of bonus juice from Devour, whatever the reason might be.

Lead from gold is quite good as well, getting extra ammo from heavy bricks.

There was a time where this used to be much more highly valued, but now with the tools we have to restore special ammo, I don't think it's as valuable.

It also does nothing for your reload or damage output itself.

Auto loading is a fantastic perk, just not when combined with one for all or some kind of setup where you want to use the GL for more than a couple shots here and there.

Overflow is a nice way to boost your magazine for multiple shots, but I like the gameplay loop of Ambitious a bit more, I want my ammo boosted through actual gameplay versus running around and picking up bricks.

On the other side of the perk column, why One for All over anything else?

Well, because it's one of the best damage perks in the game.

Tag three enemies within a short amount of time for thirty five percent bonus damage on a ten second timer.

It is not hard to hit three enemies in a single shot.

Rampage has NOTHING on One for All, in the slightest.

Rampage might actually be the worst perk on Mountaintop.

The timer is much shorter, the damage buff doesn't go as high as One for All.

and it requires constant killing to keep it rolling.

I would be avoiding Rampage basically the entire time.

Vorpal is strictly a boss damage perk for any sort of damage strategies that involves rotating on and off of this weapon, likely to be combined with auto loading.

I don't think there's any PvE reason to take Vorpal otherwise.

Adrenaline Junkie is more of a spin off of Rampage than anything else and I can understand the desire to combo this with Demo for the natural synergy, but again, the duration of One for All is what keeps me invested into it over Adrenaline Junkie.

One for All gives you the time to adjust and breathe and figure out your next move, not to mention the ease of re triggering the effect, whereas Adrenaline and Rampage, all of these have much shorter durations that I just don't like.

Harmony and Recombination are cousins, we'll talk about them in the next role I've been using.

Frenzied is a tried and true perk, you get the bonus damage, faster reloads, faster handling, there isn't much to not like here.

But, I like the bigger damage boost compared to Frenzied.

I've also used Frenzy quite a lot on other weapons in the past, I'm just kinda tired of it.

It's very passive too, like you don't even need to do anything to activate it other than just fight, which is something that people love about the perk, but not me.

Yeah, I know activating One for All is basically one click up the dial from Frenzy, but I like what I like, alright?

So, now we have the other role that I've been using, which is auto loading recombination or any other damage perk by extension that acts in a similar way.

This requires a bit more discipline over when you break out Mountaintop because you're usually wanting to commit a big shot on a big target and then farm back up again.

It's great for champions or boss targets and it's also probably something that I would prefer in a perhaps non Battleground esque GM Nightfall situation, something where

There aren't as many enemies to kill or maybe they're spread out a lot, so it's not as easy to trigger something like One for All.

In autoloading world, your options are much more limited as there isn't too much of a replacement for autoloading.

and there are only so many perks that really synergize with it.

The big three here are probably Harmony, Recombination and Frenzy or Vorpal, probably Frenzy because it applies to more than just bosses and it also does a bunch of other stuff.

Harmony is a twenty percent damage boost that you can activate much sooner than something like Recombination because it only requires a single kill.

However, part of the limitation is that you NEED to swap within three seconds and there isn't always going to be an opportunity for that, not that you NEED to capitalize on every chance you get with Harmony.

I think it's a nice in between perk vs. Recombination or Frenzy, but also, Frenzy is at at least the same, it's not as annoying to activate, it stays on as long as you're in combat.

You're trading Harmony's at at least the same for Frenzy's at at least the same, and it's other benefits AND it's convenience factor, which I think a lot of people will take.

Then we have Recombination for the one big giga shot on a target and this lives and dies by your ability to hit those shots.

It is a high risk, high reward move, if you hit it, great, if you miss, ew, awful.

Now, Succession, the sniper, has historically enjoyed the Recombination perk and it's been a staple on the weapon for a very long time as a damage perk.

But, with Mountaintop, there are some caveats because you actually have other options.

A Recombination X Ten shot on our friend from earlier did one hundred eighteen thousand seven hundred thirty three damage, with every shot after dealing fifty nine thousand four hundred sixty seven damage.

And for very short term damage phases, Recombination is the go to perk.

So, how long does it take for Frenzy to outdo Recombination?

If we take our regular spike grenade shot and simply increase the damage by the same, we get a rough estimate of how long it takes for Frenzy to completely overtake Recombination

and it's about... seven to eight shots.

At seven shots, they're within a couple of thousand damage points of each other, they're basically break even, and at eight shots, Frenzy starts to gain some steam over Recombination and after that, becomes much more significant.

To fire eight shots of mountaintop with no reload speed boosts or anything like that, it takes about the same amount of time if you are mashing the reload as soon as you fire the shot and if you're mashing the shoot button as soon as you reload so that you can shoot as fast as possible.

So, if you're gonna be in a damage phase that lasts longer than the first shot, I'd say much longer

and you want to use Mountaintop as your sustained weapon, go with Frenzy.

Remember what I said earlier, Mountaintop isn't the best sustained weapon by a long shot compared to other special weapons of its kind.

I think that's everything I have on Mountaintop for all y'all.

I've really been enjoying using it, although I can see why some people have their reservations about the weapon in the grand scheme of the game, it's sustained damage, not as strong as other options.

I think it's nice to have it back, I think it's absolutely a weapon worth putting into your arsenal or at the very least in your vault.

The curated shiny roll of Lead from Gold isn't a bad starter one.

but there is a lot of specializing that you can do with this weapon, which I really appreciate.

There tends to be like, you know, one or two good rolls on a gun most of the time and that's just all you use, so having something where you can spec for what you really need is pretty nice and I hope to see more of that going into the future.
