We're back in the workshop, and it's time for some more mods on the big N70.

It's time to sort out the suspension, something it desperately needs.

We're going to be putting in a Tough Dog suspension lift, front and back.

And we're also going to be looking at spring rates and how to get them right in your four wheel drive.

We're going to walk you through a full DIY suspension install for dual cab utes.

I'll show you some tips to make it easier.

And while I could do it on the hoist behind me today, I'm doing it on the ground because I bet most of you wanting to do this don't have a hoist in your shed.

Let's get into it.

Before you start, go around your suspension bolts the night before and give them a bit of a soak in penetrant spray.

If your suspension is old or you've done a bit of beach work, this can really help.

So it's time to hook into the suspension.

Now we're going to be replacing this spring and strut, and we're also going to be swapping out the factory upper control arm for a Tough Dog unit.

And that'll really help with dialing in the wheel alignment and getting it mint once the suspension lift is in.

When you're looking at this for the first time, it can be a little bit daunting because there's a lot in the way, but it's relatively straightforward.

Basically, I'm going to be removing the sway bar linkage here.

I'm going to split this ball joint and basically move this whole assembly out of the way so I can get it straight.

You don't need to disassemble everything.

But a handy tip that I've learned after years of doing it the hard way is if there is something in the way of what you're trying to get at and it's relatively easy to remove, just remove it.

Don't try and work your way around something to get at what you're actually trying to take out, because chances are it'll take longer and then after a while of fiddling around, you'll end up just removing it anyway.

So just hook in, do it once, do it right.

And I'm going to start with disassembling everything here that's in the way and that might stretch when I pull everything to the side.

We'll get that old strut out.

Here are the tools and parts you're going to need.

If you don't have any of these, they're fairly common and can be picked up at most tool shops.

Next up, to get the upper control arm out, we need to split this ball joint here.

There's a couple of different ways to do it.

So I've removed the split pin from inside there and I've undone this nut.

Now, this is called a castle nut, and one of the ways you can undo this ball joint is by spinning him around so you don't damage the top bits there and putting it back on the thread so it's flush with the bottom and then you can hit it and knock it out.

That's one way.

People like to hit the upper control arm as well if you're not reusing it because you can go pretty ham on it.

But fortunately, Toyota, they've thought of us four-wheel drivers and there's a nice little flat surface on the front of the spindle there.

And I reckon if I give that a little love tap with this ball-peen hammer, it should come off nicely.

Look at that.

That was easy.

First things first, we need to remove the old upper control arms.

Next up, the factory strut.

Remove the bolt from the lower control arm to allow the strut to freely lower itself out of the strut mount.

Having struts that are pre-assembled makes this job so much easier and faster.

Slip it into the top mount, align the bottom and tighten the bolts.

It's that easy.

Now the strut's in, we can install the new upper control arm.

Throw it all up into the assembly and you're done.

Tough Dog make it easy by shipping pre-assembled struts.

They come ready to go out of the box for a quick and easy install.

So you don't have to worry about messing about with dangerous spring compressors or taking it to a workshop to get the spring fitted.

Beauty.

OK, so we've got the front suspension in.

That's the shocks and struts, the new Tough Dog upper control arms.

I'm going to put her back on her own weight and go over all the bolts, make sure they're all tight, and then we can start on the rear suspension.

When it comes to torquing your bolts to spec, it's always a smart idea to look at the vehicle manufacturer's torque specs.

Tough Dog have their torque spec requirements for all their suspension componentry when you bolt it in.

Next up, it's time to hook into the rear suspension.

Now, what I'm going to do here is this is your handbrake cable.

I'm going to unbolt these.

They have a little retainer bolt on the leaf spring pack here.

Unbolt that, the shocks can come off and there's a plate underneath that's held on with four bolts for these U-bolts, and then the diff can lower down below it.

What I've done is you'll notice that the trolley jack is under the housing there.

What that'll allow me to do is raise and lower the spring as required to help line up holes.

And there's also a pin on the bottom of the leaf spring pack that will help locate it.

That'll just help get everything nice and aligned.

But it's relatively straightforward to do the rear suspension.

Just, again, make sure you set up your jack stand so it's nice and safe.

And I like to do one side at a time because it just helps keep the diff in position while you're swapping the springs out.

The next step before we install our new leaf springs into the vehicle is to install our bushes into the spring.

And to do that, we need to give them a bit of grease.

Fortunately, this Tough Dog kit comes with plenty of grease.

You need to do the job.

But if you don't have this, you can use either a silicon or lithium based grease.

Don't use rubber grease.

It's not good for the bushes.

So when it comes to actually greasing the bush, there's a couple of ways to do it.

And there is also a wrong way to do it.

You need to apply grease to the outer face of the bush and on the inside where the pin will sit.

Don't put grease on this outer edge of the bush.

The reason for that is when you install it into the leaf spring, if there's grease on that, that bush is essentially going to turn inside the spring.

If you grease it, make sure that grease is going to dry out.

You want the pivot point to be where the pin is for the shackle.

So that's why we put grease in there so it can move a bit more free.

But if this bush is turning in the spring, that can actually be one of the reasons why your suspension will start to squeak.

It's really important you don't put grease on this outer area.

Another reason for that is the pins we're installing are greasable, which means you can touch up the grease that goes inside for the pin and keep it nice and lubricated.

But the only way to re-grease out here is to take the bush out and do it again.

The problem is, if you apply grease to that outer face of the bush, when you flex off road, the bush is going to separate a little bit.

And if you're in a dusty condition, a bit of dirt and grime and crud can get inside that bush and it'll work its way into the grease.

And eventually that'll create a corrosive paste that'll just grind against the bush, wear it down.

It'll also grind against the spring, wear down your bushes faster.

In extreme cases, you actually get scour marks inside the spring.

So just to recap, you want grease on the outer face where the shackle plate will sit and move against the bush.

And you want grease inside here where the pin will sit so it can turn nicely.

We've just laid out a couple of different spring packs here because I want to talk about spring rates.

You hear us harp on about getting the springs suited to the load you're carrying in a vehicle, but what does that actually mean?

So we've got a couple of different leaf packs here and I'm going to show you.

First up here, this is the factory leaf pack.

These are your primary leaf springs and these are your secondary ones.

This is what carries the load.

As this spring compresses, you can see here there's a witness mark on the bottom.

As the spring compresses, it'll touch this spring.

And that's what gives you the ability to carry a load.

A manufacturer has a really hard job.

They've basically got to create a spring that can handle a bit of load and is comfy around town.

To do that, they're going to have to compromise somewhere.

That's why if you load up the back of a vehicle, it starts to get uncomfy because you'll touch these load leaves.

Tough Dog doesn't have that problem because they can create more leaf packs to suit the weight you're carrying, which is why we've got a couple of different ones.

So depending on what you do with the vehicle, you can change the leaf pack in the back to suit your load.

So this first one here, this is a comfort pack.

So basically, that's for someone who mainly uses their ute around town, doesn't carry a lot of weight in the back.

That can definitely still handle the occasional bit of weight if you need to load it up, help a mate move house or something like that.

But it's not designed to carry lots of weight all the time.

It'll still handle definitely up to GVM of the vehicle, but that's more for your around town cruising.

This next leaf pack here, this is a 300 constant load leaf pack, and that's what I'm going to be putting in the back of the N70.

The secondary stage still got some nice load leaves in the back there so I can carry a bit of weight.

I do have a bit of weight there with fridge and camping gear, tools and storage and stuff like that, plus my 12 volt system.

I need to carry a bit of load, but I don't want to go over the top.

I still want to have a nice vehicle around town, particularly when I take a bit of weight out of the back.

Remember, this vehicle's got to do the Monday to Friday and take me away on the weekend, which is why I've gone for a 300.

And as you can see, the leaf packs progressively step up depending on how much weight you're carrying right down the bottom.

That's a 700 kilo constant.

That's if you're carrying a lot of weight.

Not many people would need to carry that much in the back of their Hilux.

But it's good to know that you can match the spring rate depending on what you're carrying.

That's one of the most important things when it comes to choosing your suspension, particularly in a dual cab ute.

For now, it's time to chuck the 300s in the back, and I reckon they're going to be absolutely perfect.

But it's good to know that down the line, if I do add more weight in the back and it's not really suiting anymore, I can step up the leaf pack if I need to.

Check out the size difference between the Tough Dog shock compared to the factory one.

I haven't gone for adjustable ones in this vehicle.

I put some adjustable shocks in the Pony and they work really well.

But I decided for the N70, I'm just going to keep it with the standard shock.

But it's still going to work beautifully in the vehicle.

All right, the rear suspension's all in and all nipped up.

I've just got to torque everything to spec.

But what I've just done here is adjusted the rear brake proportioning valve.

This won't be on every single vehicle, particularly if you're a vehicle more modern.

It's more common on older vehicles.

And the design might be a little bit different, but the principle remains the same.

Basically, the proportioning valve sits up behind here on the chassis.

And what it does is adjust brake bias to your rear brakes, depending on the load you're carrying.

So it does that by this arm here, which basically tells it the height that the diff is sitting.

And the way it works is when the arm's sitting like this, when you compress the rear spring, say you put a load in the back, the springs are going to flatten out and the arm's going to move up.

And that's telling the proportioning valve, I'm carrying a load, I'll put more bias to the rear brakes to help to stop the vehicle.

And then when you unload the vehicle, the springs are going to go back to their normal ride height again, and the arm's going to go back to normal and brakes will be unaffected.

The problem is when you lift the vehicle, you've got to increase the gap between basically the diff and the chassis.

And that's going to make the arm do that, which is essentially going to tell the brake proportioning valve, oh, I don't have any load on the back.

And you won't get very good braking performance from your rear brakes.

To fix it, all we need to do is bring the arm back up relative to the height that you lift the vehicle.

So I've lifted the vehicle around 50 millimetres.

So I'm going to bring the arm 50 millimetres up.

Fortunately, Toyota's got some smart engineers and they've left a little bit of threaded rod there for me to just adjust the proportioning valve up.

And that's all good.

On my older vehicles like the Pony, for example, I just made a little bracket that was relative to the height I'd increased the vehicle and moved it up.

And that'll basically just ensure that I'm getting good performance out of my rear brakes.

So if your vehicle does have a rear proportioning valve and you skip this step and put all your suspension in and then your brakes aren't very good, more than likely there will be your rear proportioning valve isn't biasing the brakes properly.

Every manufacturer is different.

So make sure you torque all your suspension bolts to the correct specification from the vehicle manufacturer.

Cool.

Oh, how good is that looking?

Just bringing the vehicle up a little bit and getting the spring rates right makes a huge difference.

There's two more things I've got to do, though.

Firstly, you need to get a proper wheel alignment.

And secondly, I've got to go over everything I touched with a torque wrench after about 500 K's and make sure it's all good to go.

Then I'm going to chuck some bigger tyres on it, some bar work, and then probably look at some lockers and get it back out in the bush.

I can't wait.
