It's been a little bit over six months since Gotham Knights launched worldwide to less than stellar reception and that has me wondering, did they ever actually fix Gotham Knights or did they just tell us we were going to get patches and then abandon it?

There's been a handful of games that have launched poorly and then the developers say that they're totally going to fix it and then they just totally walk away.

A great example would be in the Redfall subreddit where for a month the devs haven't said so much as a word about patches, updates, a game plan, a roadmap, nothing.

They just haven't replied.

And even the most hardcore fans of Arkane on the subreddit are like, guys, seriously, what is going on?

And some people have just accepted it.

They're in the acceptance stage of depression.

I think it's time for the sub to stop beating this horse.

We're not getting a roadmap.

And I think this is important to do because when a studio does go back and patch a game that launched broken, while it certainly doesn't forgive the broken launch, it does count for something because they don't have to fix it.

They could just abandon it.

Like we're seeing with Redfall, apparently maybe they come back and it turns into an amazing game.

I don't know.

But as of right now, they've been totally silent.

So I want to boot into Gotham Knights now and see how it runs, if it's improved at all, if it still hitches like a mother trucker or if it now is worth playing.

OK, so while we load in, I will say that was actually much quicker than I remember it.

So already load time seemed to be improved.

What I was going to say before it loaded so quickly is that I did reinstall the game fresh and I reinstalled all of my drivers.

If you don't recall back when this launched, it had horrible shader compilation issues, which basically is the system that the game uses to calculate how it's going to render certain things.

And it's different for each PC setup.

And normally games pre-cache those shaders and pre-calculate them so that it's good to go beforehand.

But at launch, every time something new would appear on screen, a new smoke effect, electric effect, whatever, you would run into a major hitch and drop in frames.

And it was super distracting, made the game almost unplayable on PC and even on some consoles.

However, now let's see if it actually remains.

Let's see if we have this problem.

We're running this at native 4k, cranked up, so full ray tracing, everything.

And honestly, that frame rate graph you see in the top left, frame timings and frame rate is actually very smooth so far.

We're staying still.

So there's that.

But I mean, honestly, not terrible compared to what we've seen before.

Okay.

Once we're actually moving, frames dip a little bit, but not anything too bad.

Let's see what we're actually dealing with when we start traveling through.

So when the game launched, when you would travel through the city, it would drop into like the forties and thirties.

I remember having some serious issues with it, but frankly, this so far is holding pretty steady.

And I got to give him credit for that.

It does seem to be improved.

There's still some pop in.

You can see it in the distance a little bit.

Crowd density is still not phenomenal.

There's more cars on the street than before.

Before I would only ever see one at a time, whereas now it seems like there's actual streets with cars driving.

So that's an improvement.

I'll give him that.

Two very dapper and shockingly similar looking NPCs as well.

Honestly for a 40, 90 to see it locked at like 70% utilization is a little disappointing.

You can see in the top left, the GPU utilization is in the high sixties.

Peaking out at like 70% and everything else isn't heavily utilized either.

So there's some sort of cap on performance.

I don't know if it's DeNuvo.

I don't know if it's just a CPU limitation or what.

But there's some cap on performance, some bottleneck, which is preventing this thing from actually performing to its full capacity and capability, which is a little bit of a bummer because you can spend a lot of money on a gaming PC and it just doesn't really get utilized because the game isn't very well optimized,

So what I am noticing just while exploring casually is that there still is a good amount of pop in.

If you look off in the distance as we travel through city streets, stuff will pop in.

And you see that right there, instant replay, Jacob pops in real bad as we're floating this way.

What's ahead of us is popping in really aggressively and that's a little bit distracting.

Ooh, yeah, that's really aggressive.

Again, this is cranked.

So the highest settings you can possibly set it to is what we're given it.

And it's still doing that.

So on, on more normal hardware, it's just going to be even worse.

So that's a little disappointing.

But honestly, the biggest problem for Gotham nights when it launched was not the pop in, though.

That was a bad thing.

It was more about the frame rate inconsistency and the fact that it would drop frames constantly while exploring to the point where exploring just wasn't fun, especially if we dropped down and we use our bike,

Which had all sorts of problems.

Yeah.

Oh yeah.

I remember it just materializes for some reason.

It just does that.

Let's see what happens here while we start driving around.

If it actually has anywhere near the same performance dips as before.

So far, no.

I mean, those graphs are surprisingly flat again.

It's not optimized.

Well, it's not running well, but it's certainly running better than I was expecting it to.

I don't know, man.

Going back and playing this again.

It just reminds me that it's like a solid six and a half to seven out of 10, even when it's working really well.

It's just not.

It's not great.

It's fine, but it's not very good compared to some of the other games that you can get.

But I mean, if you can get this for like 10, 15 bucks, it's really not a bad use of your money.

You can definitely get 10 bucks of enjoyment out of this, I think personally.

And I think that's why it's important to remember that like six and seven out of 10 games, I do think have a place in the industry.

There is a price point at which six out of 10s and seven out of 10s will sell and where I think it's a fair value.

I don't think they're worth 70 bucks, as we saw with Redfall.

But if it's working and it's a functional game and you can get it for 10, 20, 30 bucks, then that becomes a little more understandable.

A great example would be that game of Vampyr from a few years back, which is very unique.

Very interesting where you're playing as a vampire.

And if you drain the blood and kill people in the game, then you gain power as a vampire, but you lose your humanity and you'll destroy the city around you by doing that.

And so you're constantly tasked with this kind of duality of whether you want to go and become the most powerful player character that you can by just absorbing all the blood, all the vampiric power,

And becoming super powerful in combats just to walk in the park, or by trying to be much more human, abstaining from all of that and choosing to play it as straight as you possibly could.

That to me was a really interesting game mechanic, but the rest of the game was super janky.

It didn't run very well, honestly, at launch.

It was pretty buggy at launch as well.

And all told, it just wasn't a great package.

There were load screens all over the place.

It felt quite outdated.

However, at like 20, 30 bucks, which is what you can get the game at now, I think it's a steal.

I think you can have a great time with that game without having to break the bank.

And that's where I see Gotham Knights.

I think at a certain price point, this becomes a pretty good time.

Yes, it's still somewhat bland to explore this world.

No, the version of Gotham we're exploring is nowhere near as detailed as what we got in the previous Rocksteady trilogy.

But honestly, it delivers something which is somewhat unique, whether you like it or not.

It's different.

And at the right price point, I think it's probably worth trying.

I mean, it has one of the most dumbass story endings of anything I can think of in recent memory.

Like, seriously, the way they choose to end this story is mind-blowingly stupid.

But I will not get into that right now in case you want to go play this.

But honestly, after going back and kind of running through this, engaging in some combat, exploring the city a little bit, I'm just reminded that it's not a super well-built game.

It doesn't run super well.

The game mechanics that are here aren't very interesting.

And all told, it's just not a great game.

You see the massive popping up there.

Jeez, dude.

And stuff like this, I can't remember how far in the game this save is.

But stuff like this is just not going to get fixed.

There's all of these crafting materials, which I would bet good money were put in here to be sold to the player through like crafting boxes that you collect out in the world.

And then you can also buy them if you want.

There's no way they put all of this stuff in the game thinking that this was a good idea or something that players honestly wanted.

They have like skill trees, but none of the skills are very unique.

They're all very, very samey.

And the whole suit system is bafflingly stupid.

Like this whole thing where they have all of these different cosmetic options.

I think each one of these were going to be sold to the player on day one.

And then they decided to strip it back.

And honestly, going back to Gotham Knights after everything that happened with Redfall, it's almost more interesting to me.

It makes Gotham Knights almost a fascinating case study because in many ways, Gotham Knights and Redfall are siblings.

It's it seems as though they were both live service games that were built from the ground up to be live service games.

The teams working on them weren't particularly passionate about what they were doing on it.

And despite last minute efforts to tone down the in-game monetization, the remnants are still here to the point where the game just feels weird to play.

It just doesn't really make sense because you're looking at it and you're like, well, there's all these different cosmetic options.

And yeah, I can transmog them, but it's super weird how it works.

And then with crafting, I can craft different suit stuff using these these resources I collect down in the bottom left, the salvage that I find out in the world, which why I'm collecting salvage as a superhero,

I don't know.

And then there's this ungodly mod system where you can slot in different mods to your suit with UI that is painful to look at.

And when you do that, it can greatly affect the potency of your suit to the point where suits of equal or higher level are not even close to competing with it.

And there's so many cosmetic options for transmogging that it feels, frankly, like all of these were initially designed to be sold to you in like a five to ten dollar DLC, but they chickened out at the last second.

It's really, really strange.

And no part of this makes sense to me.

I mean, hopefully the negative reception of this game, End of Redfall, will wake people up and make them realize that this just doesn't work.

This is unacceptable and we'll stop getting games like this.

But I guess only time will tell.
