  • Millions of people are gearing up to travel for the Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial start of summer. This year, there is a record surge of post-pandemic travelers hitting the roads and skies, making it the third busiest Memorial Day weekend in over two decades. According to the AAA, more than 42 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more, which is nearly 3 million more than last year.
For many Americans, this weekend is also a test for airlines, hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's summer travel chaos. With the great summer getaway in full swing, the majority of travelers will be hitting the roads. AAA predicts that over 37 million Americans will be driving this Memorial Day weekend. The lower gas prices, with the national average for a gallon of gas over a dollar cheaper than last year, are enticing people like David Thompson to embark on road trips.
However, some travelers are trying something different this year. Tom Laughlin from New York City has decided to travel by Amtrak, considering the traffic congestion experienced in the past. As for air travel, the biggest test lies at the nation's airports. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened over 2.6 million passengers on Thursday alone, surpassing the numbers from 2019.
At Chicago O'Hare Airport, the TSA line in Terminal 1 extends almost the length of the terminal, creating concerns for passengers like Dennis Salisbury, who worries that he didn't leave enough time to catch his flight. However, U.S. airlines are optimistic that the combination of increased staffing and favorable weather conditions this weekend will help avoid the flight cancellations and delays that plagued the summer of 2020, where over 45,000 flights were canceled. This Memorial Day weekend will be a critical test for airlines as they strive to provide a smooth travel experience for their passengers.
