  • Inside Ukraine's Chernobyl site after Russian occupation - BBC NewsThe Chernobyl former nuclear power site in Ukraine was occupied by Russian troops during the war, but it has now been regained by Ukrainian forces. There were concerns about potential damage to the plant during the fighting. BBC correspondent Yogita Lemai is among the first journalists to reach the site since Russian forces departed. Access to Chernobyl has recently become available via an off-road track, as the bridge leading to it was destroyed to halt the Russian advance. This location witnessed the world's worst nuclear disaster and was one of the initial areas in Ukraine to be captured by Russia. Petro, a security officer, recalls the tense situation when they were surrounded by tanks and aircrafts. Russian forces also broke into monitoring and control stations, leading to electricity being cut off for a few days. The loss of power would have had catastrophic consequences, as the site stores nuclear waste that could potentially release radioactive materials. Despite not being worried for his own life, Petro feared the outcome if he were not present. Due to safety risks, it is not possible to venture further from the site, but walking in the direction of the Red Forest reveals an area with extremely high levels of contamination. Drone videos have shown evidence of Russian soldiers constructing trenches and potentially staying within the Red Forest, highlighting their lack of knowledge about nuclear safety. Ukraine claims that these soldiers were exposed to significant doses of radiation. Moreover, beneath the plant lies a basement where 170 members of the National Guard were held captive by Russian forces. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
  • Subtitles section
  • During the war, the Chernobyl former nuclear power site was occupied by Russian troops, but it’s now back in Ukrainian hands.
  • There were concerns the plant may have been damaged during fighting.
  • Our correspondent Yogita Lemai is one of the first journalists to reach the site, north of the capital Kiev, since Russian forces left.
  • Access to Chernobyl has only just opened up on an off-road track.
  • The bridge to it was destroyed to stop the Russian advance.
  • This is the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, among the first parts of Ukraine to be captured when Russia invaded.
  • They surrounded us with tanks and there were aircraft flying overhead, security officer Petro says.
  • Russian forces broke into monitoring and control stations.
  • Electricity was cut off for a few days.
  • A major threat.
  • We store nuclear waste.
  • If we’d lost power, it would have been catastrophic.
  • Radioactive material could have been released.
  • I wasn’t really worried for my life.
  • I was scared of what would happen if I wasn’t here.
  • It’s not possible for us to go any further because it could be risky, but if you walk down here, in that direction, is an area of very high levels of contamination known as the Red Forest.
  • And drone videos now come out which officials here have seen and they’ve confirmed to us that Russian soldiers not only built trenches there, but they appear to have stayed there as well.
  • This is evidence of how little they knew about nuclear safety.
  • The soldiers were exposed to significant doses of radiation, Ukraine says.
  • Below the plant is a basement where 170 members of the National Guard securing Chernobyl were held captive.
  • No one still knows where they are.
  • They were taken by Russian forces.

  • Are we sure that tomorrow Russian troops cannot appear here?
  • My answer would be no.
  • Putin is completely unpredictable.
  • And nuclear smoke can reach Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and even Great Britain.
  • For now, there’s relief here, but also a sense of unease.
  • The threat is just 10 miles away, across the border.
