  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The ruined Ukrainian village of Shyrokyne is plagued by the spectre of another conflict. Previously a pleasure beach, the area now features dragon's teeth defences and barbed wire to prevent Russian marines from capturing the strategic village. Seven years ago, the residents were forced to abandon the seaside resort. The dire predictions about the consequences of a new war in Ukraine are based on what occurred in villages like Shyrokyne during the previous conflict. In 2015, the village became a violent battleground for separatist and Ukrainian forces, transforming it into a frontline ghost town. The dangers are illustrated by the tragic incident where two residents were killed by booby traps when they returned to retrieve their belongings. The Ukrainian garrison stationed in Shyrokyne are aware of its strategic importance in any attempt to create a land bridge between Russia and Crimea. Despite being subjected to provocative artillery fire from pro-Russian separatists, the soldiers have orders not to return fire. While frustrating, they accept the logic behind this directive. The battle for Shyrokyne demonstrates that even peaceful resorts can become targets and rendered uninhabitable. It serves as a somber reminder that war has devastating effects on both people and places.

  • On what used to be a pleasure beach, there’s now dragon’s teeth defences and barbed wire to impede any Russian marines who try to come ashore and capture the strategic village of Shirokane.
  • Seven years ago this month, this seaside resort had to be abandoned by its residents.
  • The dire predictions about the consequences of any new war in Ukraine are based in part on what happened in villages like this the last time.
  • In 2015, this was a place where separatist and Ukrainian differences collided violently.
  • Ever since, it’s been a frontline ghost town.
  • We’ve been watching our step around here because a few years ago some of the residents of Shirokane came back into the village to try to recover some of their belongings, but tragically two of them walked into trip wires and were killed by booby traps.
  • The soldiers who make up the Ukrainian garrison in Shirokane know from first hand experience that the village will be an important part of any land bridge the enemy may try to create between Russia and the Crimean peninsula.
  • Like many other places on Ukraine’s frontline, Shirokane has been hit by provocative artillery fire unleashed by pro-Russian separatists on the other side of the divide.
  • The Ukrainian soldiers are under orders not to return fire.
  • He said that it was extremely frustrating, but that he and his fellow soldiers accepted the logic behind not doing so.
  • In the battle for Shirokane, nothing was sacred.
  • A sleepy little resort famed for relaxation became a fixation for both sides who between them made a sought after refuge uninhabitable.
  • It should stand as a salutary warning from recent history.
  • War kills people and places.
  • John Irvine, News at 10, Shirokane, Eastern Ukraine.
