  • I’m joined now by Stephen Bates, the Managing Director of the company that makes Blackfreeze.
  • Thank you very much for joining us.
  • Let’s ask the big question that we couldn’t answer there, core switch failure.
  • Stephen, what does that mean?
  • So first of all, I’d like to say that we fully understand the frustration our customers are feeling around the delays in the messaging and browsing services.
  • So I’d like to apologise unreservedly to our customers who are experiencing these problems.
  • This service issue we’re dealing with the utmost urgency and we’re throwing all of our resources at it to get this solved.
  • We do believe that the issue around messaging and browsing challenges are to do with a core switch in the RIM infrastructure.
  • What does that actually mean?
  • Sorry to interrupt.
  • What does that actually mean that users can understand?
  • Oh, okay.
  • So these switches that route the traffic, they normally have a backup system.
  • The RIM global infrastructure has backup systems to ensure the resiliency of that network.
  • And what we’re seeing in this instance is some of those switching systems have failed to operate in the way we would expect.
  • They would normally back up and provide continual services.
  • But what we’ve seen in this instance, over the last few days, is this service issue intermittently since Monday.
  • And that’s proving to be quite tricky for us to bottom out.
  • But rest assured, our focus is on ensuring that we get that service back to the levels that we expect as a business, but more importantly, our customers expect as a service from us.
  • When?
  • When will that be?
  • The challenge we’ve got is this is an intermittent problem.
  • So the services are variable at the moment, but we’re doing everything we can to get the service level back to what we expect for our customers.
  • There’s a real danger that some of those customers, there’s a lot of anger out there.
  • This is not just in London where the anger is, it’s worldwide.
  • They’re going to think potentially for the first time, switching to Apple, aren’t they?
  • We fully understand the frustration our customers are experiencing.
  • People that use the BlackBerry smartphone are used to having the ultimate communication experience to interact with their friends, their families, and their work colleagues.
  • There’s no communication at the moment.
  • We’re seeing an impaired service, but the key focus for us at times like this is to ensure that we’ve got all our resources, ensuring that we deliver the service we need to do.
  • We have a set of world-class engineers and a set of world-class network specialists who have been working around the clock for the last few days to bottom out this issue.
  • Stephen Bates, I do appreciate you joining me tonight.
  • Thank you.
  • Thank you.
