  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Poland and NATO are stating that the recent missile strike that occurred in Poland was not a deliberate Russian attack. Initially, there were concerns that the strike was the beginning of a larger conflict, but it now appears to have been a tragic accident. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the incident. However, there is no indication that Russia had any intention of launching an offensive military action against NATO. The evidence on the ground suggests that the explosion was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile that went off course. The Polish president has stated on camera that there is no evidence to suggest that it was an intentional Russian attack. Meanwhile, the Ukrainians claim that yesterday's missile barrage from Russia was the most intense in the ongoing war, but they managed to intercept and shoot down a significant portion of the missiles. It is worth noting that the same type of missile that caused the tragic accident was successfully intercepted. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not commented publicly on the incident. Given his current difficulties in Ukraine, it would be unlikely for him to intentionally provoke a conflict with NATO. Although the missile strike was not intentional, both Poland and Ukraine will argue that Russian aggression ultimately led to this tragic accident. As a result, they will call upon the West to provide them with improved air defense systems. Reporting from Warsaw, this is John Irvine for News at Ten.

  • Polish police officers conducting a follow-up search after a missile strike that at first looked worryingly like the opening salvo in a wider war, but which tonight appears to have been a cruel accident instead.
  • An investigation into this incident is ongoing and we need to await its outcome.
  • But we have no indication that this was the result of a deliberate attack and we have no indication that Russia is preparing offensive military actions against NATO.
  • The evidence on the ground here in Poland suggests the explosion was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile that went astray.
  • The Polish president has been on camera saying there was absolutely nothing to indicate that it was an intentional Russian attack on his country.
  • Ukrainians claim that yesterday’s Russian missile barrage was the heaviest of the war so far, but that they shot down three quarters of the hundred or so missiles aimed mainly at Western Ukraine.
  • This is a successful interception by the same type of missile that went awry, killing the two Poles.
  • Vladimir Putin was seen today, but he did not comment publicly about what happened.
  • With his problems piling up in Ukraine, now does seem like an unlikely time for him to choose to pick a fight with NATO.
  • While it seems the Russians did not deliberately attack Poland, both the Poles and the Ukrainians will argue that ultimately Russian aggression is to blame for what appears to be a tragic accident.
  • Off the back of this, both countries will urge the West to provide them with more and better air defence systems.
