The iPhone 14 pro is the most confusing iPhone I think I've ever owned.

And while the past 10 months I've spent with this phone have been enjoyable for the most part, I'm ready for the iPhone 15 pro to replace this.

But let's start with the good, because there's a lot to like about this phone.

First off the display.

I know we all drooled over the specs when this phone was first announced, but after being through several months of intense Florida sun, I can confidently say that this has been the best iPhone ever for being outside in sunny conditions.

We have that beautiful 6.1 inch super retina XDR display with 1600 nits of peak brightness and 2000 nits of peak brightness while outdoors.

And those 2000 nits of peak brightness are one thing like that's impressive.

But what impressed me even more than that was the fact that this phone does not auto dim as easily as my 13 pro and 13 pro max did.

And that's crazy to say, because this phone gets a lot brighter than the 13 pro, but it doesn't dim as easily.

It doesn't get as hot as easily as the previous generation, which really impressed me over these past 10 or so months, the 120 Hertz promotion display has become one of those features that I cannot live without.

Like I noticed the difference when it drops down to 60 Hertz in low power mode, or when I go back to using an older device.

But what really sets the iPhone 14 pro apart from the iPhone 13 pro, which I was using previously is the always on display where the screen drops down to one Hertz to minimize battery drain while also showing your wallpaper and notifications.

But if you go into your always on display settings, there is a toggle here for show wallpaper.

So you can disable the wallpaper from that always on display, which is better for battery longevity.

And with iOS 17, that always on display has gotten even better because we now have standby.

This is a new feature in iOS 17 that turns your iPhone into a smart home, like display when putting it on a mag safe stand and positioned and landscape mode.

Another feature that sets the iPhone 14 pro apart from all previous iPhones is the dynamic Island.

Do you guys remember when this feature was first announced and everybody clowned on it, everybody was saying how it's useless.

It's, you know, why would you have that there?

You know, it's not innovative.

So many bad comments about the dynamic Island.

I kind of questioned my own like thinking of it.

I thought it was cool at first, but everybody around me hated it.

So I was like, you know, what am I missing here?

But after using this for, you know, the past almost year now, I have to say the dynamic Island is honestly one of my favorite features on the 14 pro and pro max.

It is awesome for so many reasons.

And it's getting even better in iOS 17. And the best part about this is that it turns what used to be notifications into smooth animations popping out from that camera cutout.

So I found it to be really useful with apps like fly D to see where your gate is and how long you have until you're boarding for apps like Uber or Uber eats.

So you can see how far away your driver is without having to go into the application or even for following sports games.

It's been useful, especially for MLB games that I might not have time to commit to watching the whole game.

It's nice to have the score always up there, no matter what application I'm in.

And I mentioned that this got better in iOS 17. And the reason I said that is because a lot of other like system wide notifications have now been turned into animations in the dynamic Island instead of notifications.

For example, airdrop is now a dynamic Island, a little pop out instead of a notification.

So it's really awesome.

Now with iOS 17, I also don't really notice the dynamic Island much, or you know, the pill shape cut out there, the notch, as some would say, I don't really notice that unless a notification pops out of there.

I kind of, just, you know, your brain kind of sees over that after using a phone for so long, it was the same thing with the notch.

When the notch first came out on the iPhone 10, your brain kind of, you know, looks past that eventually.

So it's been the same case here with the 14 pro as for the durability of this phone.

I've actually put this phone through hell compared to what I usually put my phones through.

I just feel like this past year with this phone, you know, it's been through a lot.

I've had it submerged in the ocean for several minutes, maybe even hours combined at time and the ocean I've dealt with a lot of water stuck in the speaker grills down here where I'd have to vibrate the phone to get them out.

I've dealt with that multiple times.

It's battled several 110 plus degree days here in Florida.

You know, I've dropped it quite a few times.

Most of those times have been with a case on though.

I do always rock a case and screen protector.

And I have to say, after all of that, this phone has come out looking pretty good.

I mean, I have a few scratches on the sides here where you see all the fingerprints as well with that stainless steel, but nothing bad.

Like I don't have any cracks or noticeable scratches anywhere else, like on the back or on the screen.

Because again, I do always have that screen protector on, but you can see down in those speaker grills.

I do have quite a bit of looks like lint buildup down there.

So maybe I need to clean that.

But that's really the only thing that makes this phone really look used and abused and doesn't really look abused.

But that's the main thing you can see like from a distance where you're like, okay, that thing's been used.

And speaking of durability, we have to talk about the durability of the battery life because that's where the confusion begins for me with this phone.

I mean, battery life, if I recall correctly for the first couple of months was great.

I, you know, I was used to a 13 pro, which had a rent rundown battery and the battery life was better on the 14 pro great.

Everything was good for the first couple of months.

But ever since then it seems like we've been on a steady decline with the 14 pro.

And this is not just me.

It's multiple other people's experience with the 14 pro and pro max this year.

It just seems like battery life has gotten much worse, much quicker than in previous years, regardless of what software I'm running.

I ran iOS 16 and now I'm running iOS 17 on this device, regardless of the software though, the battery life has performed pretty much the same, you know, in the grand scheme of things, which is just simply not great,

Especially when you're paying so much money, you know, over a thousand dollars for a phone, which is Apple's top of the line.

You'd expect to get great battery life, but I just have not experienced that.

Nothing has really blown me away with the 14 pro in terms of battery life, which is quite disappointing.

I can still get through the majority of the day without charging my device.

So I usually have to charge it one time throughout the day before charging it at night.

I charged my phone overnight, so I always start with a hundred percent, but it usually gets down to about 20 to 30% around like 7.00 PM, six to 7.00 PM, you know, depending on my usage.

But this is the first long-term iPhone review I've done.

I think ever where I've not been impressed with the battery life.

It's also the lowest battery capacity.

I think I've ever had on a device only 10 months at any time, less than one year in.

And you can see here, my battery health is at 91%.

That is very low.

I believe every previous year I had like 95% or more.

So that says something now I do want to preface that there is kind of a little asterix there because this phone has been through some unprecedented heat, like the heat here in Florida this year specifically has been crazy.

We've had multiple heat index of one 15 plus days here with the humidity and everything that's intense for any lithium ion battery, but especially in your phone when you're using it and it's getting warm plus that outside heat that does impact the battery as well.

So I do want to say that could be one reason why I have lower battery capacity this year.

Now, as for the cameras on the iPhone 14 pro, first off, look how huge these lenses are this year.

Like I can tell in real life when somebody has a 14 or a 13, just from looking at the back of their phone, like while they're holding it typing or taking a picture, I can always tell because the lenses are just so large.

The whole camera system is so large on the 14 pro and pro max, which I personally love it.

I think it looks awesome.

Now, this iPhone 14 pro is the first iPhone to have a 48 megapixel main lens.

And it definitely shows, especially when you shoot in raw, which is where you get that full 48 megapixel quality.

And shooting in raw is awesome.

You know, as long as you don't shoot everything in raw and you have a high iCloud storage plan, you won't have an issue with storage.

Although these files are very large, no matter the subject of the photo, no matter what you take, if you take a picture of the ground and it's in raw, it's still going to be a large file size.

I did also notice something interesting on the 14 pro that I guess could be considered a con of the camera, but it's that you have to hold it back further from the subject.

Like you have to hold the phone back a little bit further from the subject in order for it to focus properly.

And this took me months to learn, especially because you know, with that macro mode, you're just used to getting really close on a subject since that ultra wide camera lens has autofocus, but it took a while to understand.

I have to back up further than I did on the 13 pro series.

And by the way, macro mode is just an awesome feature.

I've used that ever since the iPhone 13 pro came out and macro mode is easily one of my favorite features ever put in the iPhone's camera.

It is awesome to be able to get so close to something and have that ultra wide lens, be able to autofocus on it.

Action mode is another new feature on the iPhone 14 camera.

And I've used this a few times and I've actually found it to be pretty awesome.

Like it looks like you're actually using a gimbal when you are in this mode, you have to be sure to put it in action mode, which I forgot to do multiple times.

For some reason, I thought, you know, you could put it in there afterwards, but that's not the case.

You have to put it in action mode before you start recording.

And it is only limited to 10 ADP as well.

So it's not as good a quality or the dynamic range is not as good, but it is still pretty awesome that you can run.

And it looks like you have your phone on a gimbal, even though it's not, we also have the second generation of a sensor shift image stabilization.

So that also adds onto action mode being awesome.

Although it's a separate feature that works in regular video mode as well.

And it shows, I found that, you know, my videos are just a lot more steady than they were in previous years.

And the video just in general on the iPhone 14 has blown me away.

I mean, the iPhone camera every year, I feel like blows me away, but Apple just takes it to another level.

It seems like every year and the 14 pro is no exception.

So even though I shoot everything in 4k 30 and every video I've shot has been perfect.

I mean, I really haven't had any type of afterthought where I'm like, man, I wish I shot that in, you know, 4k 60, or I wish I shot that in, you know, a lower exposure, the auto exposure, everything on the 14 pro camera and video mode is pretty much perfect.

I mean, the only, I've had very few exceptions, but I find that the most time I have to adjust the settings, like turn down the brightness or turn down.

The exposure is in the camera mode when I'm taking a photo, not a video, for whatever reason, video mode has just been pretty much absolutely perfect for me on the 14 pro ever since day one of having this phone pro res as another video feature.

That is really awesome on the iPhone 14 pro you can see the video quality improvements, but the amount of storage that each file takes up is insane.

The file sizes are absolutely massive.

I would rather just shoot in cinematic mode.

Now that we are not limited to 1080 P like we were on the 13 pro, you can now shoot cinematic mode videos in 4k 30, which gets you really crisp looking videos.

The performance on the iPhone 14 pro has been great.

The a 16 chip inside is solid and it adds a small, but noticeable upgrade over last year's a 15 chip.

And when I go back a year further and use my 12 pro and 12 pro max, I can feel a much bigger difference in performance, especially given the 120 Hertz display on the 14 pro.

So really no complaints here.

This phone can run any and everything you throw it.

I've thrown so many games at it, exporting things.

It can handle everything with ease, but another area that just really hasn't blown me away with the 14 pro has been cell connectivity.

So for the very first time, iPhones sold in the U S did not come with a SIM card tray, which meant that every single iPhone 14 had to be activated via E-SIM.

And while my experience was fine and didn't take long, there have been several nightmare stories about Verizon T-Mobile and pretty much every other carrier taking forever to activate iPhone fourteens and resolve E-SIM related issues.

Even as late as July, 2023, I had a friend who had an iPhone 14 plus crap out on him and he needed another one and he called Verizon up and it took him like four hours in order to get E-SIM set up on his new iPhone 14 plus he went from a 14 plus to a new iPhone 14 plus,

And it took forever to get that E-SIM transferred over.

That just should not be happening.

So if you can avoid the E-SIM headache, you're not going to really have major issues with cell connectivity.

Like I said, cell connectivity has been fine.

It just hasn't blown me away on the iPhone 14 pro.

I mean, I just feel like at this point you would think five G would have matured a lot more, you know, in the past couple of years than it has.

The five G towers are still far and few between.

I'm still not getting five G you know, at my house, I don't get five G most places I go and I'm in a pretty big city, but easily one of the best additions, one of the best features on the iPhone 14 series,

Not just the 14 pro, the entire 14 series is emergency SOS via satellite and crash detection.

Both of these features have saved several lives and I've covered these stories on the channel several times.

Now, thankfully I've not had to use either one of these features, but I will say that it's given me extra peace of mind just to have this phone in my pocket, knowing that if I were to get in a bad crash and not be able to move at all,

My phone would take care of that emergency call for me.

So with all of that being said and done, I've loved my experience with the iPhone 14 pro for the past almost year.

Sure.

It's been the most confusing iPhone experience I've ever had with its battery life, mood swings, and the crazy battery degradation, but it's also the best iPhone I've ever owned.

And if you're looking to buy an iPhone 14 pro right now, once the iPhone 15 pro drops, you're going to see big price reductions on the 14 pro, especially on the used market on eBay.

A lot of people are going to try to sell their 14 pro to get, you know, the 15 or the 15 pro.

So check eBay.

If you're looking to get a 14 pro, I would not buy this phone brand new.

I would buy it used to get a good discount, especially if you're upgrading from a much older device.
