  • For the longest time, these 2D Mario titles have felt the same.
  • Other than the DS version and maybe some of the Wii, the new series devolved into a stale formula that became way too predictable.
  • However, Nintendo just revealed the next step in the franchise, and it builds upon every game from the past to give us something fresh.
  • The most obvious change in Super Mario Bros.
  • Wonder is its wacky cartoony style.
  • Gone are the boring, generic models, and instead we have characters who look full of life.
  • When Mario gets a mushroom, you feel the bounciness, the pure happiness in his head.
  • The animation is exaggerated.
  • When he runs, there are actually smear frames to really nail down the cartoon style.
  • When he goes through a pipe, his hand reaches back out and catches his head before it falls.
  • Am I playing Mario or watching Looney Tunes?
  • Now aside from the incredible new art direction, the most impressive aspect of this game is the new Wonder Flower power-up.
  • It changes the world around Mario, giving life to inanimate objects, and providing new ways to complete the level.
  • Basically, Mario be trippin'.
  • None of this makes any sense, but it doesn't have to.
  • Also, while we're on the subject of power-ups, let's talk about the elephant in the room.
  • Literally.
  • Was Elephant Mario on anyone's bingo cards?
  • Probably not, but who cares?
  • Just like everything else, Nintendo doesn't need to give a logical explanation behind Mario becoming a chonky boy.
  • That's just the wild world of Wonder, and we have to accept it, whether we want to or not.
  • The item makes him slow, but strong, able to kill anything with his trunk.
  • It's a more traditional power-up that doesn't change the gameplay too much, but I think it looks fun.
  • Overall, Super Mario Bros.
  • Wonder is everything 2D Mario should be.
  • The game has personality.
  • Every new enemy, power-up, and emphasized animation.
  • This is something truly unique.
  • A game we've never seen before, but still staying true to the plumber's roots.
  • It's not another lame entry in the new series.
  • It's something different that looks like an absolute blast to play.
