On today's episode of What's Going On With Shipping, the motor ship Ocean Explorer is aground in Greenland.

Hi, I'm your host, Sal McCogliano.

Welcome to today's episode.

So we don't talk too much about cruise ships all the time.

On this channel, there are a lot of great YouTube channels that cover cruising on a daily basis.

But this issue is a really interesting one because it deals with an expedition cruise ship.

This is a smaller cruise ship, smaller crew, less passengers that go to areas off the beaten path.

This is not the icon of the sea, one of the big monster Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, or Carnival cruise ships.

These are much smaller vessels designed to go to these regions, much more expensive to go longer voyages.

But there are also more risks associated with them.

We talked about this not too long ago on a ship that was sailing back from Antarctica to South America, where several people were actually hurt and, in this case, killed on board because of waves.

But in the case of the Ocean Explorer, it's a vessel that ran aground off the coast of Greenland.

We're going to take a look at this story and give you the background on it.

All right, let's jump into this.

So this is a story over on G-Captain Mike Schuller put this together.

This is Ocean Explorer.

And you can see how green Greenland really is.

Man, did Leif Erikson lie through his teeth.

Concerning Greenland, you'll notice some unique features.

A whole series of rubber inflatable vessels here, along with kayaks on board, to get personnel ashore on areas where there's no landings of any kind.

You will notice that in this case, this is a picture from the grounding, that the ship does have its lifeboats down.

To get into the story here, an expedition cruise ship with 260 people on board remains stuck in a remote, and this is remote, Greenland Fjord, I'll show you where it is, after attempts to refloat the vessel at high tide failed.

So Greenland on the west side has extremely high tides, range of tide.

East side of Greenland, not so much.

And so tide really isn't a big factor here.

The motion, the motor ship Ocean Explorer ran aground Tuesday in Alp Ford, part of the Northeast Greenland National Park.

The ship remained stable with no threats to the environment and everyone on board unsafe.

So this is really important.

Number one, ship's not leaking.

They haven't busted open the side of the vessel.

And most importantly, they're not worried about the vessel rolling or sinking at this point.

While there are other cruise ships in the area, the nearest ship capable of helping was located more than 1,200 nautical miles away.

Denmark's Joint Arctic Command said Wednesday, it has sent the Canute Ramussen, an offshore patrol vessel in the Royal Danish Navy, which is due to arrive Friday morning.

An initial attempt to refloat the vessel at high tide early Wednesday, using its own power, was unsuccessful.

All right, let's break this down a little bit and talk what they're discussing.

So here is the coast of Greenland.

This is marine traffic.

This right here is the Canute Ramussen.

It's at the very southern tip of Greenland.

And it has to run, run, I tell you, all the way up to here.

This is the 1,200 miles.

It's gonna come all the way up to Denmark straight through the very passage where Bismarck, for example, fought out Hood and Prince of Wales, up here into the very northern reaches, up into a fjord and down the channel of another fjord.

But that's 1,200 miles.

That's a good distance away.

And they're talking about not getting there till Friday.

This is the fjord with other ships around.

So here is Ocean Explorer.

You'll see the vessel in that fjord right here.

She is way up there.

I mean, way up a very narrow fjord and run aground.

Now, it's not unusual for ships to go there.

This is the track for the Silver Endeavor.

The Silver Endeavor was just there.

Granted, they didn't go quite as far into the fjord as Ocean Explorer, but they're there.

And there's also other ocean vessels in and around the area.

So should something happen, they can sortie vessels very quick there and get into it.

This is an area that's not devoid of ships.

And the fact that ships haven't been diverted there, they think they're in pretty good position.

They're not overly concerned with any issues associated with the ship sinking or a potential casualty.

So that is the one piece of good news.

What I am envisioning is that they're gonna use the offshore patrol vessel to try to pull the vessel off the shoal it is on right now.

To get a salvage vessel up here is going to be a feat.

Now, I hope that they're already working this, planning on this, because if Friday rolls around and they cannot get that vessel off, then they're gonna have to start thinking about it.

And what they really don't want is weather coming in, problems where they would have to do an evacuation of this vessel onto one of the other vessels in the area.

They really need to ensure that there is another vessel close by that should they need to abandon ship, they can get on board to.

This is the vessel on CruiseMapper.

So you can see it, Ocean Explorer, where it exactly is.

Details of the vessel was built in, excuse me, 2021, not 2019, flagged in the Bahamas, built in China, cost $65 million, speed of 16 knots, about 341 feet, beam of 59 feet, about 160 passengers on board.

Passengers for this cruise paid about $33,000 a piece.

Crew of 99, 10 decks, 80 cabins, and it is a really beautiful vessel.

One of the interesting things about this vessel is it is a ice-strengthened vessel, Polar Class 1A. It's owned by a Danish company, Suntone Maritime Group, and until May of 2023, it was operated by Vantage Cruise Line.

It's charted right now to Aurora Expeditions.

What is really interesting about the ship is the technology involved.

So one of the things we see here is a very unique bow structure called an X-bow.

Very unique, it has this kind of almost dagger shape in the water.

It increases in its tumblehome coming up to the vessel.

It's designed for extremely bad weather, which you can encounter, obviously, in this area.

It has stabilizers on board, and you can see how it really is a very unique vessel.

Part of a class of the Infinity class of ships, there's a whole series of them, Greg Mortimer, the Ocean Victory, Sylvia Earle, Ocean Odyssey, Ocean Albatross, and Ocean Discovery.

With that Olsteen X-bow, it's really designed for some really difficult weathers, so it can handle it.

Beautiful ship, I would argue.

I think it's a really interesting ship.

Again, designed for this kind of expedition style of cruising.

This is their Greenland site, which really shows how they do these sites.

You get to go see glaciers, marine life.

You can kayak in this area.

Man, this is cold water.

I don't know how much I'd be really wanting to do it.

You can step ashore on Greenland, something a lot of people don't get a chance to do.

You can see the wildlife, and it's a pure expedition.

You see right here, the full Northwest Passage expedition runs you about $33,000 to go on quite a lot to these expeditions.

This is the vessel, beautiful view from above.

You can see the two lifeboats staggered in there.

You can see the two rescue boats there.

Actually have an enclosed pool.

You don't want to be in a pool out on this vessel out in the open areas.

Just, again, and these are the suites that are on board, about 400 to 600 square feet suites on board, so pretty nice, obviously, areas to accommodate on board.

I did find this interesting.

This is the ship features.

Polar class, safe return to port, so if something happens with the engines, they can actually drop a kind of like a stabilizer in and be able to use it.

Zero speed stabilization.

I mentioned the Olsteen X-Bow.

Virtual anchoring and station keeping.

I think their station keeping is pretty good right now.

I don't think they're moving very much.

And a best-in-class energy consumption.

I'm gonna say their energy consumption is down quite a bit right now because they're not burning a lot of power.

This is a danger out there.

We're putting human beings into areas where you don't usually go, and that means you're also devoid of a lot of the rescue and emergency services that are traditionally out there.

On a modern cruise ship, you get in trouble.

There's a lot of ships in and around the area you can sortie and respond to.

When Costa Concordia went down in 2013, it was right off the coast of Italy.

There were plenty of ships right in the area that could flock in there, and you really minimize the loss of life on board.

Right now, operating off the coast of Greenland, this is uncharted waters, a lot of this.

There's probably not great charts.

And companies like this that operate these vessels should have procedures in place should something go wrong, either another vessel coming to their aid or rescue and salvage services on tap for how to handle an emergency like this.

So just know, while cruising is extremely safe, it is a very safe process to go on.

There's a question about the impact on the environment, on local infrastructure, on pollution, both in the water and in the air.

In terms of safety, they're extremely safe.

However, as cruise ships push the bounds of size and you start putting thousands of people on individual platforms and you start sending cruise ships into areas where there's not a lot of infrastructure,

There is potential risk, and you should be aware of it.

Not saying not to do it, but just saying that you need to be aware of that potential risk.

And so now you've got a ship sailing up to go save people who are spending $33,000 on a cruise, and they're getting to see a lot of Greenland.

It's just one narrow fjord they're getting a great view of.
