A1
  • preposition
  • Starting at a particular place, time or level
  • Subtitles section
  • Kerry, we'll start tonight with the Port Adelaide situation.
  • There's been a pulling of rank by the AFL over the club, over its handling of the Lockheed Jones and Elia Aliyah situation on the weekend.
  • They have come down hard in a way that we rarely see the AFL do.
  • Yeah, a massive story is brewing here and let's listen first to Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies today.
  • No, they haven't failed concussion tests today.
  • They have reported, both of them in fact have suggested that they've still got headaches.
  • And so on that basis, out of an abundance of caution, we've made the decision to put them both into the concussion protocols.
  • I mean, from our perspective, he's made a mistake here.
  • It's obviously one that has created a fair bit of conjecture around the league and understandably so.
  • Unfortunately, Port do have some history in this area.
  • And we're talking about the Dr Mark Fisher.
  • I don't think Chris Davies could have been more clear.
  • The doctor made a mistake.
  • He's admitted that, he's put his hand up.
  • Port, in my understanding, Damo, are going to get a massive fine from the AFL over this.
  • Couldn't have come at a worse time in the current environment.
  • It did look extraordinary, Cain, after that head clash to see Elia Aliyah come back onto the ground.
  • Now, Port are saying he is still testing negative to concussion, but to not do that SCAT 5 test was a big mistake by the doctor.
  • Yeah, and they've admitted that, Caro.
  • And clearly, for everyone that was watching the vision, it was obvious that he was concussed, I thought, the way that he reacted.
  • And Lockie Jones as well.
  • So, in hindsight, they should have reviewed the vision more clearly.
  • They should have ruled him out of the game and done the test.
  • They didn't do that.
  • They put their hand up.
  • But good clubs stick by good people.
  • And Mark Fisher is a good person with a long history at that football club.
  • He's impacted many lives in a positive way.
  • I can vouch for his character.
  • I would trust him with my life.
  • I've certainly trusted him with my kid's life.
  • He has made a mistake.
  • Good clubs stick by good people.
  • And that's what Port Adelaide was doing.
  • But Damien, he's a doctor in his showdown and a player the club could ill afford to lose.
  • Yeah, correct.
  • And even the diagnosis of Jones' injury as a migraine.
  • And the AFL has effectively, Lord, come over the top of all of that and put, effectively, both players into the concussion protocols.
  • It means they ruled out of this week's game as a result of what happened.
  • The doctor would be devastated.
  • The club should be embarrassed, I think, with the way it's been handled because, particularly in this current climate, I could understand maybe a year ago, two years ago, three years ago.
  • I would ask you, Damien, if the last fine was $20,000 at the same club, what could this one look like?
  • Look, I feel it has to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Now, how much of that they choose to suspend in totality is up to them.
  • But there's no point putting the usual AFL wet lettuce leaf on this one.
  • This is as serious as an issue we've got.
  • And we don't see the AFL coming over the top of a club like this.
  • And it does open up the conversation, Carro, to something that the AFL has now been heading down toward the path of for some time.
  • I think it's going to fast-track the independent doctor analysis.
  • And Chris Davies, too, on radio tonight, after that general media conference, spoke of that issue.
  • The discussion has very quickly turned to if there's a requirement for an independent person to be making these calls.
  • And the only thing that I would say to that is that whoever is making that call has to make a judgment based on circumstances that they're provided with on the day as well.
  • So there's always potential for decisions to be questioned.
  • And so, as we have said, there are issues.
  • Now, this was earlier this season.
  • Ollie Wines goes down in a particularly heavy knock here.
  • Now, not assessed at all.
  • He just effectively waved away the medical staff.
  • I don't know why the AFL didn't look at that one as well.
  • That's not to say he was concussed, but he wasn't taken off for a test.
  • This was last year.
  • Again, friendly fire, to use the sporting vernacular of the captain, Tom Jonas, with Zach Butters.
  • And Butters played the game out.
  • And there was an issue at play there.
  • And if you go back to 2016, with another hard-knotted, Hamish Hartlett, who went down in that clash against Hawthorne and then was reintroduced to play very quickly without the proper diagnosis and protocols going on.
  • So the AFL do have somebody at every game.
  • Well, apparently they've got someone in the ARC who can, if that vision hasn't been seen, they can step in and overrule.
  • We haven't heard from the AFL today publicly.
  • We never really do hear from the AFL much on footy matters at the moment.
  • And to me, Damien, this is just another example of why someone needs to be seen and actually be in charge of AFL footy.
  • The incidents that have happened this year, I mean, the biggest one, I suppose, was the lights out at Brisbane and the fact that Melbourne were out on the ground quite a few minutes before Brisbane even knew they were meant to be.
  • The marble roof and the Ross Lyon issue.
  • All the rule interpretations, the sling tackles, the pausing play, just even over the weekend for injured players.
  • It happened with Jack Viney at the MCG yesterday.
  • So many issues and so few spokesmen and women.
  • And I'm not saying that any of these would have been avoided had Brad Scott still been at the helm with Andrew Dillon actually running footy.
  • Now at the moment he's CEO-elect, so he can't possibly be seen to be in charge of everything.
  • I know there are good people running footy for the AFL, but there's no one in charge and I don't think it's good enough.
  • And they're the issues we know about.
  • And they're not the ones that the day-to-day frustrations of AFL clubs who are forever wanting answers on things that they just don't get.
  • Footy bosses are genuinely frustrated.
  • And this concussion issue, and I know it's a pet issue of yours.
  • None of us like criticising doctors and they've sort of been sacrosanct in the game and no-one's ever dared to say that a doctor, no-one's suggesting in this occasion a doctor made a decision based on winning a game.
  • No-one is suggesting that.
  • But they make decisions in the heat of battle and the heat of moment.
  • And that has now been called into question.
  • And like everyone else in society, they make mistakes.
  • And this was a big mistake.
  • Even if Aaliyah Aaliyah still isn't officially suffering from concussion.
  • Speaking with Port Adelaide, we notice that the calendar ticks over into August overnight, Caro.
  • And I raise that today because of the narrative of the Port Adelaide Footy Club.
  • That being the timeline about public announcements around their coach, Ken Hinckley.
  • Three losses in a row.
  • Do they balk at this timeline?
  • Yeah, and you were the voice of doom three weeks ago and I scoffed at you, Cain.
  • I'm still 100% convinced that Ken Hinckley will coach the club next year.
  • I believe that there will be an agreement.
  • I reckon it will be a two-year deal announced.
  • Well, you're not going to announce a deal the week you lose a showdown.
  • So whether that would have been announced this week, I don't know.
  • Certainly won't be announced this week.
  • But I think private discussions at the club have been leaning this way for a long time.
  • And I don't think, it would take an utter disaster now for Ken Hinckley to lose his job.
  • It's not going to happen.
  • There's a verbal agreement that he'll be the coach next year.
  • Now it will be up to the Hinckley camp and Port Adelaide to work out the terms of that deal.
  • How long, how much and all of that.
  • But he will be the coach.
  • And I think they need to announce that, not this week with everything that's going on, but before the finals.
  • Just to settle the nerves down and to keep everyone relaxed.
  • Even with three losses.
  • Carlton, Collingwood, Adelaide.
  • Geelong to come without two players.
  • There's a tough draw coming in the next four weeks.
  • But he will be the coach.
  • There's that commitment and they won't go back on that.
  • Let's talk about the game though, because Port Adelaide spoke a big game and they spoke tough before another showdown.
  • And not for the first time.
  • And it backfired.
  • Firstly, let's have a listen to Ryan Burton during the week and Brodie Smith's response on the Sunday footy show yesterday.
  • I hate the football club.
  • I think we all do.
  • There's nothing new.
  • I love playing against them.
  • They're always great games and the build up's great.
  • So I'm going to enjoy Saturday night hopefully and walk away with four points and the trophy.
  • No, we had it last year.
  • So we're starting to get used to, they roll out the hatred script every year for the showdown now.
  • So something that we're used to and we just wanted to focus on what we had to do.
  • As I said, our season was on the line.
  • So we weren't worried about them.
  • We were worried about winning the contest and winning the game of footy.
  • I love the rivalry.
  • I think it's the strongest rivalry in the game.
  • But when you make calls like that and you don't perform and you get beaten badly in another showdown, it's time to pull back.
  • Yeah, that's right.
  • Otherwise you get embarrassed and they're embarrassed.
  • It's because they've become fake, you think, from Port Adelaide?
  • Yeah, I think the hatred is real, but you don't need to speak like that.
  • You've got to respect your opposition.
  • Like Braden Maynard, when they played Port Adelaide, it was a strong quote.
  • But he said, look, Port Adelaide better bring their best.
  • But there's a level of respect there that I thought Port Adelaide lost for their opposition on the weekend and I doubt we'll hear them speaking like that ahead of next year's showdown.
  • In all fairness, if Port went missing and the AFL leadership has gone missing, Fox Footy went missing again on Saturday night.
  • A massive story.
  • A massive story as it turned out, even bigger with the Aaliyah-Aaliyah situation.
  • And why you don't send a commentary team to cover one of the biggest rivalries in Australian sport is utterly beyond me.
  • Now, I know Mark Rusciuto was there on the ground, as he always is, as a Fox Footy commentator.
  • But I think it's pretty difficult to get him, if a bigger story broke involving Port Adelaide, to cover it.
  • And I don't understand why they don't send a team.
  • I've been big on that too, Caro, for what it's worth.
  • I feel there's an obligation to the game, that you need to have your A-grade team there for those big moments.
  • And is it going to be legislated in the next guise of the broadcast deal?
  • It should be, certainly.
  • And look, I work for a radio station that isn't always at games and I don't like it.
  • But I think when you are the broadcast partner, TV broadcast partner, and all that money is at stake, you need to be there.
  • The Crow's vulnerable when it comes to, or the power of vulnerable when it comes to key forwards, like Tex Walker, seven goals four in the weekend.
  • I know it's nothing new, but this is where finals time is around the corner and the same things keep popping up.
  • This mark scared me for Port Adelaide, when Tex Walker, who's not the biggest commanding player, just did that.
  • Stood at the top like a colossus.
  • Go, oh no, it's happening again.
  • And even, that's a late mark.
  • The amount of times I've seen poor Trent McKenzie just scrambling.
  • This is it, Kano, 1v1 scrambling.
  • It's just like, oh no, it's happening again.
  • You're right, you've got a wry smile on your face for those reasons.
  • You can see it unfolding and I fear for them in finals when the big players come to play.
  • Now they have a plan in place to address that in the off-season like they tried to do with Radaglia last year, but that's not going to help them ahead of the September demo.
