  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In 2021, more than 100,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses, with fentanyl being responsible for two-thirds of those deaths. What makes fentanyl particularly dangerous is that most people who consume it are unaware of its presence. Unlike other drugs, fentanyl cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled, making it difficult to detect. So, why is fentanyl becoming increasingly prevalent and deadly? Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is a staggering 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Originally developed as a painkiller for surgical and cancer patients, pharmaceutical fentanyl was commonly administered through patches placed on the skin. However, illicit drug dealers have seized upon the extreme potency of fentanyl and started adulterating other drugs, such as heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine, with it. By doing so, they are able to make these drugs more affordable, addictive, and dangerous. Consequently, opioid-related deaths, primarily caused by fentanyl, have drastically increased in recent years, with over 150 Americans dying every day due to fentanyl and synthetic opioid overdoses. Illicit fentanyl is primarily produced in foreign countries like China, India, and Mexico, and it is then smuggled into the United States in the form of powder or pressed pills. Drug cartels are especially involved in the manufacturing and distribution of fake pills designed to resemble medications used for pain, attention deficit disorder, or anxiety. From May to September 2022 alone, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confiscated more than 10 million counterfeit pills and 982 pounds of fentanyl powder. On the streets, fentanyl goes by various names, including Friend, Apache, or Goodfellas. The use of fentanyl results in a powerful but short-lived high, accompanied by euphoria, slowed respiration, reduced blood pressure, and potential side effects like nausea, fainting, seizures, and even death. Just a single dose of fentanyl can prove fatal.
