Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has requested a trade after contract extension talks between him and the team hit a wall, a dead end, and took a turn for the worst.

All of those things.

Today I want to dive into what's really going on between Taylor and the Colts, discuss who is to blame, and why Taylor may have just taken back all the leverage in the situation.

This clip of a scuffle was posted on Twitter from the Browns training camp.

But the reason the scuffle broke out is what makes this hilarious.

You can see Browns linebacker number 54 Ogbo Okoronkwo slapping guard James Hudson in the face mask and then running away immediately.

It's literally been since middle school since I've seen this move pulled.

And dang it, I respect it because that's 100% how I fight.

Now we've got some juicy drama between the Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor who apparently requested a trade over the weekend.

Neither party here is completely innocent in making this mess.

It's like being a parent and walking into a room that's been destroyed in your home and then looking over at your dog and your toddler, who are both covered in evidence, both responsible for making this giant mess.

The problem, Jim Irsay, who should be the parent in this analogy, is the fucking dog destroying the room with the kid.

Now 24-year-old Jonathan Taylor is heading into year four of his rookie deal with the Colts.

Taylor was taken in the second round of the 2020 draft, so there's no fifth-year option on his contract.

And if you've been paying attention to the NFL offseason, all of the running backs have been pissed off by the fact that they are underpaid and undervalued.

They held a Zoom meeting to air their grievances.

Jonathan Taylor and his agent decided to ask the Colts for a contract extension and also allegedly requested roughly $16 million per year.

That request comes just a few days after Giants running back Saquon Barkley settled for $11 million for this upcoming season in New York on the franchise tag.

Taylor wanting $16 million per year isn't as crazy as it sounds, considering that's roughly what the two top backs Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara will be making this season.

And at this point, Jonathan Taylor has never been arrested after a pro bowl like Kamara.

Taylor is also trying to avoid being in the same position that Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard all found themselves in this offseason, which is getting slapped with the franchise tag, which would essentially force Taylor to play one more season well below his market value.

While $16 million may sound like a lot, it's what a top 5 back should be asking for right now.

Keep in mind, that's how all of the other contracts at every other position work every year in the NFL.

When a top tier player is about to become a free agent, they reset the market by becoming the highest paid player at their position.

Sometimes they are the best player and it makes a lot of sense, but many times they are a pretty good player at the right time.

And I honestly think Jonathan Taylor and his agent are trying to get the running back market back on track, corrected if you will.

Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs and Tony Pollard were all tagged this offseason, which kept their salary at around $10 million, which was well below the 15-16 top of the market value.

Specifically speaking for the running back position, I can just speak first hand, we do do a lot.

And you just want to be treated fairly, I mean you see why guys, they request trades, they just want to feel valued by not only their coaches, their teammates, but the organization as well.

And I commend Taylor for trying to correct that, because if he succeeds, it will benefit a very good back who needs a new contract moving forward, and quite honestly, the Colts can't afford to pay him.

Just today, we learned that Colts running back Zach Moss broke his arm.

That's really unfortunate for Zach Moss, who is now expected to miss 6 weeks from the injury, Moss came over by way of Buffalo, and was the number 2 running back on the depth chart behind Jonathan Taylor.

This obviously makes Taylor even more valuable now, considering the guys behind Zach Moss are rookies Evan Hull, Jake Funk, who ironically is the best smelling guy on the team, and Deion Jackson, 3 guys with 267 total rushing yards,

All belonging to Deion Jackson who is last on the depth chart.

And as much as I love his name, just by looking at Jake Funk, I don't see a 1000 yard rusher.

The good news for the Colts is that there are 4 talented running backs left in free agency, Dalvin Cook, Zekiel Elliott, Kareem Hunt, to a lesser extent, Lenny Fournette.

Personally, I'd just pay Jonathan Taylor what he wants, instead of paying less money overall, but still overpaying for one of those free agents.

But if one of those guys sign with Indy, I think they will fuck up any momentum the disgruntled backs have currently built up.

This also speaks to why the Colts won't trade him.

There aren't any teams out there right now willing to give up anything for running backs.

The Colts won't trade him because they don't have any buyers.

That could change once the season gets going.

The real issue with Jonathan Taylor's plan for getting paid more money is he's dealing with the crazy person in Jim Earsey.

I don't know how to make sausage.

Plus, Jonathan Taylor is coming off his worst statistical season, which was hindered by injuries, and he's got one season left on his rookie deal, plus an extra season if they tag him after the 2023 season.

He doesn't have much leverage.

It's crazy though to think right now that the future of NFL running backs getting paid fairly hinges on the kindness of these two men, Mark Davis and Jim Earsey.

If either one decides to pay Josh Jacobs or Jonathan Taylor, say $16 million per year, that will help all other running backs.

Taylor asks for $16 million.

The Colts laugh in his face.

He requests a trade.

So Jim Earsey meets with him.

No deal is made, and now the Colts are threatening to put Jonathan Taylor on the NFI list, which next to the sex offender list is the worst list to be on.

In the meeting with Jim Earsey, Jim told Jonathan Taylor if Taylor could sit down and listen to Earsey's entire musical album, start to finish, he would become the richest running back in NFL history.

Taylor walked out of the room before the first song even concluded.

Now I mentioned the NFI list.

What the fuck's that?

That's the non-football injury list, which is reserved for injuries that happen away from the team facility, which allow teams to essentially keep a guy on IR without paying him for a year, without that year counting on that player's current deal.

Essentially, it would be the worst case scenario for Jonathan Taylor.

When talking about it, Jim Earsey dropped this strange quote.

He said,

Jonathan Taylor asked for a raise, and Earsey was like, The Earth's a billion years old, Jonathan.

Does anyone even miss the dinosaurs?

Here's where shit gets even crazier though.

The Colts are saying Taylor has a back injury, which would allow them to play that trump card and put him on the NFI list.

A back injury they also claim he suffered working out on his own.

Taylor tweeted he never had back pain, never reported back pain, and this gets more complex because Taylor began training camp on the active, physically unable to perform list after failing to pass his pre-camp physical,

But that is related to his January ankle surgery.

Also, I think the Colts were like, any injury to a running back is a back injury, right Goodell?

We can use that loophole?

Like I mentioned, when Tom Grassi and I discussed this this morning on GPS, Jim Earsey just needs to be quiet.

Him publicly talking about all this has made the situation ugly.

It makes the Colts look petty and also stupid.

They have the cap space to pay Taylor, and will continue to have cap space assuming Anthony Richardson is the real deal and he plays through his rookie contract.

Don't get me wrong, I think the health concerns with Taylor are fair, but if he can play like he did in 2021, where he rushed for 1,800 yards, had 20 total TDs, he'd be instrumental in giving Anthony Richardson a chance to really develop.

I'd argue the Colts are one of the few teams right now who should overpay a running back to help their young quarterback.

His role over the next two seasons is more important than that of Saquon or Josh Jacobs or Tony Pollard.

And don't confuse what I'm saying.

The Giants need Saquon Barkley to be great, but Daniel Jones got a massive contract extension.

Jones needs to prove he can be effective regardless of who he's handing off to.

Josh Jacobs would be great for Jimmy G, but the Raiders are a team in limbo right now.

Taylor's instrumental.

It comes down to these two things though.

One, Jonathan Taylor is drawing a line in the sand with his contract and he's doing it to try and benefit all running backs moving forward.

I believe that.

And the Colts once paid Andrew Luck $24 million even though they didn't have to because he retired.

So Taylor probably thought they might be willing to do a solid for him as well.

Instead, when he asked Jim Irsay about getting a raise, this was Jim's response.

Jim is vying for the position as the worst owner in the NFL.

A spot that's wide open now that Dan Snyder is officially gone.

Unlike Snyder, who is an ass, Irsay is just good old fashioned incompetent.

Now maybe he feels pressure to not overspend on a position that is at an all-time low in value, but with the Zach Moss injury with the rookie quarterback, maybe, just maybe he realizes putting the load on your running back while barely paying him is the smart thing to do.

At least for the next couple seasons.

And it makes sense to do it now.
