  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Ki-Adi Mundi, one of the most hated Jedi Masters in the Order, is known for his adherence to the Jedi Code. As strict as he is, he ironically has a family of his own, which is a source of controversy. In this article, we will delve into Ki-Adi Mundi's life and explore why he is so disliked within the Jedi Order. We will also highlight his combat skills and power within the Force, including his devastating Force pushes and ability to heal minor injuries.
  • Subtitles section
  • Despite often being in the background, Ki Adi Mundi currently stands as one of the most hated Jedi Masters in the entire Order.
  • Many acolytes who observe the galaxy far, far away state that Master Mundi is not just a bad Jedi, but a bad person, one who is actively an issue for the rest of the Jedi Order.
  • One of the core issues is how radically close Ki Adi Mundi adheres to the Jedi Code, or should we say, how far he decides to take the code.
  • Mundi's rigidry in the code makes the likes of Mace Windu look relaxed in comparison, all of which comes back to his very family.
  • Ironically, the strictest member of the Jedi Council is one of the only Jedi to actually have a family of his own back on his planet.
  • But it's from his family that Mundi receives the most controversy, and in this Holocron, we are going to expose why this Jedi Master is one of the core problems with the Jedi Order of the Clone Wars.
  • So sit down with us today as we look into the life of Ki Adi Mundi,
  • and talk about why he is so hated rightfully.
  • Before we begin, due to the holiday season, there is a big sale on the Star Wars merch page, where you can get yourself or your family member something for half off.
  • Check out the link in the description down below if you're interested.
  • And now, let's get into the video.
  • Ki Adi Mundi is renowned for his skill in combat and power within the Force.
  • His ascension to the Jedi Council may not have come as a result of his power, though, but his status definitely complements his strength.
  • His Force pushes especially were devastatingly powerful,
  • enough to break a deep crater in solid rock.
  • Not only this, but he was skilled in force healing to some degree, as he was able to successfully heal minor injuries.
  • But these skills paled in comparison to his skill with the lightsaber.
  • Mundi used a hybridized style which consisted of Form IV Ataru, Form III Sarisu, and Form II Makashi.
  • With this style, he was a beast on the battlefield to say the least.
  • This fact earned him begrudging respect of many of the clones who served alongside him.
  • During the Battle of Hypori, Mundi would show his strength when fighting the freshly emerged General Grievous.
  • In Legends continuity, General Grievous was a force to be reckoned with, and the droid general easily threw around the Jedi team on Hypori, and Mundi would be the last Jedi standing.
  • Mundi fended off Grievous for far longer than any of the other Jedi Masters present, at least long enough for the ARC troopers to arrive.
  • Beyond this, he led the Galactic Marines through some of the most important battlefield victories in the Clone War.
  • Yet beyond all of this, Mundi is still regarded as one of the worst Jedi not only of his time, but in the Order's history.
  • So to find out why, we'll need to go all the way back to the very beginning.
  • Mundi was one of the rare Syrian males born on his home planet.
  • On Syria, the birth rate of the males to females is one out of twenty, an extremely low margin.
  • Out of his large family, Kiadi Mundi was the only male born.
  • Mundi began to show signs of force sensitivity from a very early age, specifically with being able to telekinetically lift objects and sense danger before it occurred.
  • However, he was so powerful that his abilities were unstable, and nearly anything he tried to levitate with the force would explode shortly afterwards.
  • However, his senses were keen, which allowed him to always sense the group of raiders that would frequently visit his family's homestead.
  • These Syrian raiders were known for stealing away male children, and they were led by a man named Bin Gharda Zahn.
  • Many times, Mundi had to hide away while listening to his father be beaten by Zahn, while the rest of the family's possessions were broken or stolen by the thugs.
  • Eventually, news of Mundi's strange abilities traveled outside of the remote world of Syria and to the ears of a certain Jedi Master by the name of Anya Kuro.
  • If you recognized this name, it would be because she is known as the Dark Woman, the same one who trained Aurra Sing.
  • as she is a very well known Jedi for her strength in the Force and knowledge of esoteric abilities not usually seen by most Jedi.
  • She was also known, though, for her intense training and borderline barbaric training methods.
  • Methods which were often so harsh that it was brought into question by the rest of the Jedi Order if they were okay.
  • When Kuro discovered Mundi, she negotiated with his father.
  • who was very reluctant at first to give his firstborn son away.
  • Because of the tiny birthrate of the males on Syria, Mundi's father wasn't willing to let him go at first.
  • But after another visit by the raiders, the father relinquished Mundi to Kuro, knowing that Syria would need a Jedi protector one day.
  • The young Mundi gave a teary goodbye and promised his family that he would return to free them one day soon.
  • And with that, he was taken to be trained as a Jedi Knight.
  • Despite being four years old,
  • the council allowed Mundi to join the ranks of the Jedi Order.
  • Kuro wanted to take him as her Padawan since she could sense his strength in the Force.
  • However, the council denied this request because they usually only sent troubled Padawans to Anya Kuro.
  • Instead, Master Yoda would become the direct master of Ki Adi Mundi.
  • This was back in the day before Yoda had decided to retire from training individual students, and Mundi would be the Grandmaster's final Padawan.
  • Ki Adi had desired to train with Anya Kuro despite being Yoda's student, and he still looked up to Kuro, who he still saw as his first teacher.
  • Whenever Kuro's harsh methods were called into question, Mundi would jump to her defense, as he believed her training was necessary.
  • In his younger years, Mundi was fighting to fight anyone who got in the way of Jedi justice.
  • He made it very clear to Yoda that he intended to go back to Syria and free his family from the tyranny of the raiders.
  • Yoda would give him the usual warning about hatred and vengeance, although he sensed no anger in Mundi's heart, something that he was very proud of.
  • Instead, Yoda only sensed resolve.
  • By the time Mundi had reached knighthood, he was appointed a Jedi Watchman over the sector that contained his homeworld of Syria, and he would return to his family just as he had promised.
  • Upon arriving, he would go back to find that the raiders were still very much active, but were under a new leader.
  • Mundi would boastfully walk into the Raiders' base and proclaim that he would be able to take them on with his hands tied behind his back.
  • The new Raider leader took that literally and had him bound before the two of them fought.
  • She actually managed to swiftly defeat Ki Adi Mundi and had him imprisoned with the previous leader, Ben Garda Zahn.
  • who immediately tried to murder Ki Adi Mundi with a knife.
  • Mundi would escape and take the fight a lot more serious this time, using a combination of his martial arts and force abilities to take out the leader of the raiders and disperse the rest of them.
  • With the raiders that had plagued Syria gone, Mundi was praised by the people as their guardian.
  • and he would continue to stay on his home world.
  • The Jedi Council made a special allowance for Ki Adi Mundi because of his race's endangerment and permitted Mundi to have a family and procreate.
  • But here is where the problem comes in.
  • Mundi was able to have a family under the stipulation that he was never allowed to become attached to any of them.
  • It was purely for his race's survival and nothing else.
  • At first, Mundi found this to be extremely difficult, and he would follow the Syrians' polygamy ways and have five wives and seven daughters, trying his absolute best not to get attached to any of them.
  • Eventually, he achieved this, saying that he did not care for any of them whatsoever, believing that they were his duty, not his family.
  • Despite this, Ki Adi Mundi desperately wanted to have a son of his own, not only to carry on the family name, but also lead the family when he was no longer around.
  • None of his wives were able to give him a son, which greatly disappointed him.
  • As a result, he would neglect all of his daughters, resulting in one of them eventually getting mixed up with a group of terrorists disguised as activists.
  • Once this daughter of his was kidnapped and nearly killed by the terrorists,
  • Mundi would go out and manage to rescue her.
  • Along the way, he learned his lesson about appreciating his daughters despite not having a son, realizing that his daughter had gone astray because he had done nothing to help her when she was young, and the signs were now showing of this.
  • In the end though, this realization would be short lived and quite tragic.
  • as this lesson would not hold strong, especially after Mundi was gifted a seat on the Jedi High Council.
  • Yoda had been so impressed with Mundi's ability to effectively quell a political issue while his daughter was personally involved, and to stop the terrorists without a lightsaber.
  • Mundi revealed that his lightsaber had been confiscated by the Syrian government for a large portion of his time there, and so, Ki Adi Mundi joined the ranks of the High Council, spending more time on Coruscant and less time on Syria.
  • While he missed his home terribly,
  • he knew his duties were first to be a Jedi and to the rest of the galaxy.
  • He would continue to have a long career as a general in the Clone Wars, and his family was never seen again.
  • Why was this though?
  • Because at some point during the war, there was a massive battle on Syria between the Separatists and the Republic.
  • We aren't sure whether Ki Adi Mundi was even there or not, but his entire family would be slaughtered in the battle.
  • Weirdly enough,
  • There aren't any comics or novels that explain exactly why this happened.
  • It's only mentioned in passing by Ki Adi Mundi, doing so when he is speaking to Anakin about foregoing attachment.
  • And this is finally why we get into why Mundi was so intensely hated.
  • In the comic Republic Sixty Two, Anakin is devastated at the perceived loss of Obi Wan during the Battle of Jabiim.
  • In his distress, he confines and master Ki Adi Mundi, glumly telling him that Obi Wan's body was never recovered.
  • And it's here where we get the line from the Syrian Jedi Master, one that would stick with Anakin forever, especially when he decided to murder the Jedi.
  • There may have been no body to recover.
  • That was the case when my family was killed during the Battle of Syria.
  • I also found it difficult to accept, but I had to if I was going to stay true to our beliefs.
  • It is this single line that paints a target on Mundi's back.
  • The callous and cold ways he delivers this information to Anakin shows his psychophanatic devotion to the Jedi.
  • Jedi are taught to be emotionless and to be without attachment or passion, but what Mundi seems to forget
  • is that they are still meant to have compassion.
  • It's clear that he at least cared somewhat, as he admitted that he had a difficult time accepting their deaths.
  • But it's how easily he moved on that shows he truly never had any attachment to them in the first place, or at least killed what little he had.
  • Despite everything he went through, their deaths ultimately did not impact Mundi at all.
  • To some in the Jedi, this kind of rigid cementation of his beliefs as a Jedi appear admirable, but to others, psychotic.
  • He had cut his emotions off so completely that he did not care for a single person.
  • So our question today is,
  • was his hatred deserved.
  • We've exposed Mundi's cold heartedness towards his family's destruction.
  • But on the same hand, we know that he deeply cares for his people and his world.
  • He cared to such a degree that he spent his life watching over them, and even encouraged his people to remain independent of the Republic.
  • They were a very low tech society that shunned away modern advancements, and Mundi appreciated this.
  • He had great respect for his people's culture, but rooted himself with finality in the ways of a Jedi.
  • Mundi was a man who tried to have it both ways.
  • He wanted to protect the sanctity of his planet's future while carrying out his duties as a Jedi.
  • Mundi was overloaded with responsibility and this caused him to be emotionally detached from everything and everyone around him.
  • Mundi believed that this was the only way to ensure his role was perfectly handled.
  • Mundi resolved to become the ideals that he stood for, rather than just use them for guidance like a healthy Jedi would have.
  • So was Ki Adi Mundi a bad Jedi?
  • By the rulebook, no.
  • In fact, he was the perfect Jedi, if not a little too perfect.
  • His devotion to the Jedi ideals ironically made him compromise his own humanity.
  • Was he a bad person, though?
  • This is a complicated question, because his heart and his desires were in the right place.
  • But what he allowed to happen to himself and to his family was in no way a valid option.
  • He did not care for the clone troopers that worked under them, and he would sacrifice their lives at a moment's notice for the betterment of the Republic.
  • Ki Adi Mundi reaches beyond the fanatical Mace Windu.
  • Mace Windu loved the Republic and the Jedi more than anything, but Ki Adi Mundi resolved to become one with the Jedi themselves.
  • And with that, he lost his very ability to love and his ability to have compassion.
  • Two things that Luke Skywalker would find made the Jedi the strongest, and some of the greatest mistakes that the Clone Wars era Jedi made.
  • Ki Adi Mundi sacrificed his humanity for perfection.
  • And the most important question of all, was Ki Adi Mundi bad for the Jedi Order?
  • And the answer to this, my friends, is yes.
  • Mundi was praised for these actions rather than called out for them.
  • He was held as a standard instead of a cautionary tale.
  • This kind of dogma just shows how far the Jedi had fallen by the era of the Clone Wars.
  • If Mace Windu represents everything wrong with the Jedi Council, Mundi represents everything wrong with the entire Jedi Way.
  • He was irresponsible with the power that he wielded.
  • But in the end, my friends,
  • Ki Adi Mundi was a product of his environment.
  • He was a product of what he had learned from the Jedi Order.
  • And although it is very clearly not his fault, and Ki Adi Mundi resolved to be the best Jedi he possibly could be, what he offered to the galaxy ultimately scared them a great deal.
  • The fact to him, the Jedi were more important than anything else, even the lives of those that he was supposed to love.
  • and the lives of those around him.
  • Mundi would sacrifice them all in an instant for the betterment of the Jedi.
  • But anyway, my friends, what are your thoughts on this?
  • What are your thoughts on Ki Adi Mundi?
  • And do you think that he was a good or a bad Jedi?
  • Thank you so much for visiting the channel today and taking the time to watch this longer video, and may the Force be with you.
