  • On Monday, something like 1,000 Israeli troops stormed the city of Jenin in the West Bank, the first incursion of this size since the Second Intifada.
  • Now, this comes amidst a general escalation of tensions between Israel and Palestine, driven in part by the new government's expansionist settler policies, which threatens to spiral into a full-on conflict and possibly a Third Intifada.
  • In this video, we're going to take a look at what happened on Monday, the wider downturn in Israel-Palestine relations, and what might happen next.
  • Before we start, if you haven't already, please consider subscribing and ringing the bell to stay in the loop and be notified when we release new videos.
  • So, let's get straight into it.
  • At about 1am on Monday morning, Israeli forces stormed the Palestinian refugee camp in the city of Jenin in the West Bank.
  • This assault involved up to 1,000 Israeli troops who were supported by drones and is expected to continue for at least the next couple of days.
  • According to Israeli officials, Monday's raid targeted a joint operation command centre of a Palestinian militant group as part of an extensive counter-terrorism effort.
  • An IDF spokesperson said that the operation was a focused brigade-sized raid and insisted that Israel didn't intend on holding ground, while another said that the purpose of the raid was to break the safe-haven mindset of the camp.
  • Regardless of intention, as of Monday morning, at least eight Palestinians had been killed, and another 50 had been injured.
  • For context, the West Bank is a landlocked territory to the east of Israel that forms the main bulk of the Palestinian territories, along with the Gaza Strip.
  • Jenin is the main city in the north of the region, with a population of about 50,000 people.
  • Now, Israeli intelligence believes that the camp in the city has become a key militant stronghold, but it's extremely densely populated with about 14,000 people, which is why there's already been a significant number of civilian casualties.
  • Now, this incursion into Jenin is the first of its kind since the 2002 Battle of Jenin during the Second Intifada, when more than 50 Palestinians and 23 Israeli soldiers were killed in over a week of fighting.
  • But despite that, this recent incursion didn't come as a complete surprise.
  • Just a couple of weeks ago, Israeli forces staged a helicopter raid on Jenin, which killed five Palestinians and injured 91 more.
  • In fact, Monday's raid is part of a wider pattern of escalation between Israel and Palestine.
  • Now, we're not going to go into the history of Israel-Palestine relations, because that would require a whole other video.
  • But the main thing you need to know is that tensions between Israel and Palestine, and especially between Palestinians and Israeli settlers in the West Bank, have escalated since Netanyahu's far-right government took office in December.
  • For context, Israel first occupied the West Bank in the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War, where Israel essentially defeated a coalition of Arab states, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
  • At the time, these were mainly military settlements, intended to basically maintain law and order in the area.
  • But these then developed into civilian settlements, despite the fact that the UN, International Court of Justice, and even the Israeli Supreme Court have all declared civilian settlements illegal and a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention,
  • Which stipulates the occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.
  • But pre-existing settlements have been expanded, and new settlements have been built since, with the rate of development changing depending on the Israeli administration in charge.
  • Today, something like 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, with a further 220,000 Israelis living in East Jerusalem, which is considered to be part of Palestine by most of the international community,
  • But is de facto controlled by Israel.
  • Unfortunately though, these tensions have rapidly escalated since Netanyahu's far-right government came to power in late last year.
  • Now, because no other party wanted to form a government with Netanyahu, in order to eke out a majority, he had to form a coalition with far-right Israeli nationalists, who are unsurprisingly pretty supportive of the settlers.
  • Of these nationalists, the two most well-known politicians in his cabinet are his National Security Minister and the Finance Minister, who also had a senior role in the Defense Ministry and is basically solely responsible for civilian affairs in the West Bank.
  • And these two have said some pretty extraordinary things, and implemented some equally extraordinary policies.
  • For instance, just last month remarking, there needs to be a full settlement here.
  • Not just here, but on all the hilltops around us.
  • We have to settle the land of Israel, and at the same time, need to launch a military campaign, blow up buildings, assassinate terrorists.
  • Not just one or two, but dozens, hundreds, or even if needed, thousands.
  • That's not all.
  • They've also said that one of the government's core missions is to double the West Bank's settler population, and that certain Palestinian villages should be entirely wiped out by settlers.
  • Leaving rhetoric aside though, in terms of actual policies, the government has advanced plans for 13,000 settlement units this year, compared to 4,427 in 2022.
  • And it's not even just new buildings.
  • A newspaper investigation from this weekend found that the ministry had basically stopped demolishing illegally constructed settlements entirely.
  • On top of that, the government has also approved the legislation of nine settlements that have previously been deemed to be illegal under Israeli law, and approved the building of a religious school in another new settlement.
  • By the way, this is just one of the reasons why the Israeli government is so keen on their new judicial reform.
  • Because the government is aware that the Supreme Court will probably rule against any more expansionist settler policies.
  • So by changing the court system, they can get around them more easily.
  • Regardless, the government's actions in this area mean that relations between Israelis and Palestinians have unsurprisingly deteriorated, which has caused an uptick in violence.
  • In fact, this year is on course to be the bloodiest for more than a decade in the West Bank, according to UN data.
  • And that doesn't even include the most recent violence, with Israeli forces now having killed 114 Palestinians in the West Bank so far this year, while Palestinians have killed 16 Israelis in the territory.
  • For context, last year 151 Palestinians were killed in the territory, the highest toll since the second intifada ended in 2005.
  • It's not just that either.
  • This has been accompanied by an escalating use of heavy weaponry.
  • Israel hasn't used helicopter gunships or drones, both of which have been used in the last few weeks, since 2005 and 2006 respectively.
  • So it's clear that the stakes are being upped here.
  • And things look unlikely to calm down anytime soon, especially with the current Israeli government.
  • And this is particularly tragic given the positive diplomatic trends elsewhere in the region.
  • Saudi Arabia is mending ties with Iran, the Yemen war looks to be winding down, and while it's obviously in a sense unpalatable given Assad's history, Syria is being reintroduced to the international community and mending ties with other countries in the region,
  • Including most notably Turkey.
  • Therefore, another intifada would inevitably destabilise the region and undermine this diplomatic progress.
  • It's interesting that even as people ostensibly into politics, the TLDR team spends more and more time analysing data and economic information as it becomes more and more critical to our lives.
