  • And then the game itself, so the biggest questions of round thirteen sat on this game, and you could feel the magnitude of it in the build up.
  • And it posed the question, were Melbourne sure that they would respond after the week that they'd been through?
  • I tell you what needed to happen from a Collingwood perspective was not to allow even the sniff of materialising.
  • if the opponent was all ginned up.
  • And I don't think they were.
  • They didn't bring the fizz.
  • Certainly, Gawne had the commitment and Petrarca was with him.
  • But whatever chances they had, they blundered in this opening term.
  • And Collingwood took the heat out of its opposition.
  • And then that knee, that was excruciating, wasn't it?
  • Yeah, it was.
  • And you knew that by the end of the night he was going to be in hospital.
  • Anyone who's had a rib injury or had cracked ribs or broken ribs, you understand the pain that he was in.
  • Melbourne didn't look like it, Gerard, from the go.
  • I was really disappointed.
  • You said blunder.
  • Yeah, they're Mel Blunder at the Melbourne.
  • They're not Melbourne.
  • They're just non threatening.
  • They're just non threatening.
  • And at the other end,
  • Bloody Collingwood.
  • Collingwood's forward line of, you know, Kruger and Harrison and who else did they have up there?
  • Frampton.
  • Frampton.
  • I mean, it's not exactly McKenna, Coventry and Peter Daycoff, isn't it?
  • No.
  • And they kick, what, eight goals between them?
  • Yep.
  • I mean, seriously, this is an incredible football club.
  • They take the saying, play your role, to a level that we've not seen for quite some time.
  • And then the veteran's taken the mickey by the end of it.
  • Yeah, that was heartwarming.
  • That was terrific, wasn't it?
  • Well, he wasn't up that high, but just because it was still side by them.
  • It's veterans' tax.
  • Yeah, veterans' tax.
  • So Cozzie looked like he might have been able to ignite them in the third quarter, but he was largely alone hands.
  • Yeah, even in the first quarter, right, they've got, just wait, go through the game.
  • Melbourne were just like a half a metre off, a metre off, because he has a snap on the left, it gets touched, a finger, you know.
  • Everything was going against Melbourne, the fifty fifties, oh, you just need a bit of luck.
  • They didn't seem to have a lot of luck, and when Collingwood went forward, all throughout the game, they were able to get quick goals back.
  • So as soon as Melbourne looked like, oh, hang on, hang on, can they mount a bit of a challenge here?
  • No, Collingwood, Jeremy Howe was just superb.
  • Yeah, I would have had him as the trophy winner.
  • So would I. I thought when they announced it, I thought they were going to announce it.
  • And I thought Chris played really, really well as well.
  • But, um, and there were the scenes in the rooms with Christian Petrarca.
  • I think that's his mom.
  • I think his dad comes into the scene.
  • It felt like crack ribs, didn't it?
  • And then what about Kruger's story?
  • So this was just his tenth game.
  • He has been around the mountain over and over.
  • Several times.
  • Tortured existence.
  • And he comes to this day and he kicks three, he'd only kicked four career goals in the AFL before that.
  • And the celebration that was long looming for Collingwood, who shut out the last quarter really well.
  • So let's talk about
  • Craig McRae, the coach, if we can, and he won't talk about it because he won't ask questions.
  • He won't answer questions about himself.
  • For him to be able to get into Kruger's head and say, hey, we need you today.
  • Just compete, just compete.
  • That's all I ask.
  • Because he's so, you know how he's always glass half full, everything positive, positive, positive.
  • They get beaten by thirty five points.
  • And you listen to his press conference and you walk away happy.
  • You think, oh, I'm feeling good, even though they got beaten.
  • I could imagine him sitting down and talking to Kruger saying, hey,
  • You can be the best forward on the ground today.
  • You could be so important.
  • Did you see when he kicked that goal and the slow mo was on him?
  • He was so thrilled with his performance.
  • They've got belief.
  • I kept saying this word belief, Jim.
  • What is belief?
  • Colin would have got something.
  • Now, if he can bottle it, I don't know what it's called.
  • But they just turn up week after week after week after week.
  • They shouldn't be near Melbourne, not on the talent level.
  • And they, Melvin, they played with Melvin today.
  • Yeah, they did.
  • They played with them.
  • They had them all day and what was it, thirty eight points at the end.
  • And it was every bit of that.
  • It was totally comprehensive what they were able to do.
  • They're just able to get the right thing at the right time out of Sullivan and out of Harrison and today out of Kruger.
  • So while they're going through this period where they are threadbare, quite clearly, and the injury list is broad, able to plug into a predictable, dependable, reliable
  • And Hoskin Elliott, you played there forward.
  • His return was so important, wasn't it?
  • I think he might be the most versatile.
  • No, he's one of the most versatile players, not just at Collingwood, in the game.
  • He can play halfback, he can play wing, he can play pseudo centre half forward as a marking player.
  • And he's really smart.
  • He's smart around goals.
  • And that mark he took on the wing just in front of the members down here, and they got it down and they kicked the goal.
  • It was like, bang, it was one against two, up he got.
  • He doesn't go back.
  • He doesn't go back behind the mark like Melbourne does.
  • He goes, right, let's go, let's move.
  • That's what Collingwood do, they move.
  • They don't stop and smell the wind and go, all right, let's go.
  • They're off and going.
  • And that's why they play some devastating forward half football.
  • Melbourne were beaten in every aspect.
  • They were beaten for run, they were beaten for aggression, they were beaten for strategy, they were nullified in the midfields, they were thoroughly beaten down back which was really interesting as they looked defensively unsound in various areas and then they were suitably dysfunctional as they usually are up front.
  • How do you get out of it?
  • They just look plain.
  • Yeah, how do you get out of this?
  • So you assume that there's going to be a response until the day when there's no response?
  • And today there was no response.
  • They weren't fizzed up.
  • They weren't ginned up ready for it.
  • They weren't, we've lived the week in hell.
  • Here's how we're going to respond to it.
  • They just came out and played and it was a bit sedate and they were overpowered and they were outworked.
  • And classically Collingwood just ran them off their legs and they won the tackle account.
  • I don't know.
  • They look like a team who has reached the end.
  • No, they've gone down the other side.
  • They reached the end a month ago.
  • Now they're tumbling down the other side.
  • They had one really clear winner today.
  • I thought Alex Neil Bullen on Nick Dacos.
  • Good coaching.
  • We're not going to let Nick Dacos run around.
  • But that's fine.
  • But Collingwood said, don't worry about it.
  • We can still handle you with Nick Dacos.
  • And they're having a great performance.
  • So it says a lot for the rest of Collingwood.
  • But I look at Melbourne now, and I think they're done.
  • I don't think they can win it this year.
  • Now, everyone will say, oh, yeah, Sandra Sally with the late news.
  • OK.
  • We're having this topsy turvy season where clubs are being challenged for a month and not playing great football.
  • And we've had different teams take their turns outside of Sydney, who have been quite consistent all the way through, to come back from where Melbourne is at the moment, because they can't stop the opposition from scoring, Gerard.
  • Now, it's okay to say you haven't, I'll say it again, you've got a dysfunctional forward line, we know that.
  • But when you're not stopping the team, the opposition from scoring, you're in real strife.
  • Because that was their one word, contest and defence.
  • Contest and defence.
  • Hard to play against, hard to score against.
  • Not anymore.
  • Not anymore.
  • They've hit the wall.
  • They have hit the wall.
  • It's a big moment to have the bye for them, isn't it?
  • They're still the right side of the ledger at seven and six.
  • And Simon Goodwin spoke in the lead up to this game about having lost their identity.
  • Now they've lost their identity, alright, as you've just identified there.
  • Is it possible to recapture?
  • Everyone goes away for five days and then do you retool them?
  • I don't know if you can retool them, you're going to have to rewire them somehow, either tactically or emotionally.
  • They both go together, because you have to get them to buy in, but you've got to get them to buy in with something.
  • You've got to offer them something to say, yeah, yeah, we're in.
  • We're in with that.
  • Because at the moment, the needle of last week's loss, that wasn't enough.
  • The response?
  • No, no, they've got some work on the mechanics and they've got to work on their brains because they look a bit confused, don't they?
  • They look hesitant.
  • Yeah, so instincts are not serving them well now and the ferocity that they made their rise on is missing in their game.
