  • Dirt Cheap: Tips to save money gardening
Gardening can be a fulfilling and rewarding hobby, but it can also be expensive. However, with a few simple tips, beginner gardeners can save money and still enjoy a beautiful garden. In this article, we will go over five tips to help you save money as a beginner gardener.
Tip #1: Look for Clearance or Damaged Plants
When shopping at a greenhouse or nursery, be sure to check out the clearance or damage rack. Often, you can find perfectly healthy plants at a discounted price simply because their flowers are spent or they may have some cosmetic damage. For example, a hydrangea with spent flowers can easily be cut off and replanted in a new planter. It will rebloom and look beautiful again. Alternatively, you can take a large planter and divide it into multiple plants, giving you more bang for your buck.
    Tip #2: Explore Alternative Sources
Don't limit yourself to just the greenhouse. Expand your horizons and explore alternative sources for plants. Check out platforms like Facebook marketplace or local gardening groups where people often sell seedlings at affordable prices. You can also participate in plant swaps or team up with neighbors to buy plants in bulk and share the cost. By thinking outside the box, you can find great deals and unique plants for your garden.
Tip #3: Collect Your Own Compost
Compost is an essential component for healthy soil and plants, and it doesn't have to cost a thing. Instead of purchasing compost, you can create your own by collecting and recycling your kitchen waste. Simply toss in leaves and vegetable trimmings into a designated compost area in your garden, cover it with dirt, and let it break down naturally. To speed up the decomposition process, you can add red wiggler worms, which help break down organic material more efficiently.
    Tip #4: Propagate Your Plants
Another money-saving technique is to propagate your own plants. Many plants can be easily propagated from cuttings, seeds, or dividing existing plants. By learning basic propagation techniques, you can multiply your plant collection without spending a fortune. Plus, it's a great way to share your love for gardening with friends and family by giving them beautiful homemade plants as gifts.
    Tip #5: Save and Reuse
Lastly, don't forget to save and reuse items in your garden. Instead of buying new planters, try repurposing household items like old buckets, tin cans, or even broken pots. Not only will this save you money, but it also adds a unique touch to your garden. Additionally, save seeds from your plants for future use. By harvesting and storing seeds, you can grow new plants each year without having to buy more seeds.
In conclusion, gardening doesn't have to break the bank. By following these simple tips, beginner gardeners can save money while still enjoying the beauty and satisfaction that gardening brings. So go ahead and get your hands dirty, knowing that you're also saving some green in the process!
  • Subtitles section
  • My name is Grace Elisai.
  • I am a plant lover.
  • I work with plants.
  • I love the energy that they give me and they give to people.
  • And today I'm going to give you my five tips on how you can save money as a beginner gardener.
  • Number one, when buying at a greenhouse, look at the clearance or damage rack.
  • Here, for example, is a hydrangea.
  • The flowers are a little spent, so I'm just going to cut this off and I'm going to replant it into this new planter.
  • It's going to rebloom, look beautiful again.
  • There's absolutely nothing wrong with this plant.
  • You can take a big full planter like this and you can split it up into three separate plants.
  • So what I've done with another one just like this is I've taken it out of the pot, found where they're growing in separate individual clumps, and I've planted them into their own planters.
  • So now I'm able to have these three that I could spread around on my patio.
  • Number two, go beyond the greenhouse.
  • You can check Facebook marketplace for seedlings.
  • A lot of people are growing seedlings from their home.
  • These ones I got for a dollar a piece.
  • Check out your Facebook gardening groups to connect and learn about plants.
  • There are plant swaps you can find and you can even team up with a neighbor, buy your plants in bulk and plant them up together.
  • Number three, you can create or collect your own compost.
  • Compost is free.
  • Just toss in some leaves, any vegetable trimmings from your kitchen into a hot spot of your garden, throw some dirt on top of it, and that breaks down.
  • If you decide to create your own compost pile, make sure you add in some red wiggler worms.
  • I have a ton of red wigglers in here and they're helping to break down the organic material.
  • If you can't create your own compost, you can go to a city of Edmondson Eco Station and pick up free compost.
  • Number four, go secondhand.
  • Check out garage sales or the ReStore to find inexpensive planters and garden tools.
  • Five, get creative when you're decorating your patio.
  • Here I've used leftover landscaping supplies, a cinder block and patio stone to create a plant stand.
  • And this is an umbrella stand I've turned into a planter.
  • Thanks for watching and happy gardening.
