  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The debate over daylight saving and standard time in British Columbia (B.C.) is causing a delay in the elimination of the twice yearly time change. Despite a law being passed in 2019 to scrap the tradition, the BC government has yet to implement the change. The main reason for this delay is the economic impact. Money, sales, and the economy are now major factors in the decision to continue with daylight saving. B.C. planned to drop daylight saving, but Premier David Eby, who was the Attorney General at the time, realized the importance of staying in sync with neighboring U.S. states. Washington, Oregon, and California are eager to eliminate daylight saving as well, and the U.S. Senate has unanimously supported this move. However, the debate on whether to stay on standard time or move to daylight saving is the current hiccup in Congress. Doctors argue that aligning our morning with brighter daylight and shorter evenings is better for our health, but politicians believe that longer summer nights under daylight saving are beneficial for the economy. BC is closely watching this debate and hopes to make a decision that aligns with its West Coast neighbors.
