  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Chicago is facing a weather alert as storms are moving into the area, with a tornado watch in effect until 10 p.m. Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist warns that all conditions are ripe for powerful thunderstorms, especially in areas along I-88 and to the north. The threat extends to Kankakee County and Northwest Indiana. It is advised to have a plan in place and inform family and friends should a tornado warning be issued. The storms are expected to first develop in the Western suburbs around the Fox River Valley between six and seven, then move into the city between 7 and 8 o'clock tonight. Ahead of the main line, there are pop-up showers and storms in Lake and McHenry County, but the concern lies to the west, specifically in the Freeport area. The cells in this area are intensifying and may become supercells, potentially producing 2-inch diameter hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph. These storms are moving east and southeast, initially targeting Rockford.
  • Subtitles section
  • A live look outside as we keep an eye on storms moving into our area.
  • Pretty quiet in the loop after a little bit of rain earlier today.
  • Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist is here now with the first alert forecast and Jim and Marie.
  • I want to start with this graphic again because we have seen the instability factor ramp up this afternoon.
  • I think it'd be a good idea to text your family and friends and have a plan of where you would go should a tornado warning be issued.
  • All the conditions are ripe and coming together to have some powerful thunderstorms moving through Chicago, especially for areas along I-88 and to the north.
  • But really, the threat does extend through Kankakee County, Northwest Indiana.
  • That's why they went ahead and issued this tornado watch in effect until 10 o'clock tonight.
  • I think we are going to see this first develop in the Western suburbs around the Fox River Valley between six and seven, so keep that in mind.
  • First and then the city itself between 7 and 8 o'clock tonight, and then once the sun sets and the system moves through conditions will quiet down.
  • But what we're seeing here?
  • Well ahead of the main line, we're seeing pop up showers and storms in Lake and McHenry County, but our concern is back to the West.
  • Still West of Rockford, the tail end of this part from Wisconsin is now leading into the Freeport area.
  • We are seeing these cells intensify.
  • These could become supercells.
  • And create 2 inch in diameter, hail and wind gusts to 70 mph.
  • They are going to be moving to the east and southeast, so they're headed for Rockford first.
  • Now that tornado warning in Green County in Wisconsin that I mentioned to a few minutes ago was allowed to expire, but we are going to carefully watch the leading edge of this line now as it has stepped South of the state line.
  • So here's the big picture where that wall of rain moved through this morning.
  • Now it's a break.
  • The break isn't such a good thing because even if you're getting sunshine, the heat's building, the instability is building, and now here comes the second part of that system.
  • You could see this curve showing up on the satellite radar picture.
  • That is just showing that the intensity is building right over Northwest Illinois.
  • We still have a flash flood warning for Cook, DuPage and the edge of Will County for another 10 minutes because rains earlier today were so impressive.
  • We saw rainfall rates of an inch in just 30 minutes, so rainfall rates of almost 2 inches to 2 1⁄2 on the tail end of this, and we're going to add to that because the storms that form are going to be torrential.
  • They are going to be moisture loaded.
  • We are checking dew point temperatures.
  • Wow, Albert was in the weather center with me all afternoon, watching these numbers just rise.
  • Now we're at 71 degrees in Joliet, 76 for a dew point temperature in Morris.
  • There's a warm front that has lifted into the area and what that is doing is starting to moisture load these storms as they form.
  • The temperature has been rising as well.
  • This area was in the 60s all day.
  • Now we're finding 70s can't keep you up to 80 degrees.
  • The warm fronts lifting in and now the second part of the system is coming at us, so it's just closing in on Rockford.
  • This red box indicates that yes, we have a tornado watch now until 10 o'clock.
  • Tell your family and friends have a place to go if you hear those sirens.
  • Check out the future cast when we take a look at this.
  • Our concern really is north of I-88 at first, so here's that 6 o'clock hour and then it intensifies into northern Cook County and perhaps the Chicago Metro between 7 and 8 o'clock.
  • This is a highly populated area.
  • A lot of cars are on the roadway and these could be some serious storms and then it will continue moving eastward over the lake and into northwest Indiana broken a bit as the sun goes down.
  • I think the bullseye for the worst activity probably runs along the Ike or 88 and places to the north right near the Wisconsin line.
  • So that's what we're going to be watching here between now and sunset, because I think the threat is real for us as we go through the heat of the day now when we see this warm front coming in earlier today with that rain it was kind of cool out with temperatures in the 60s,
  • But you could tell it was steamy a little bit like kind of humid.
  • But now we're just bringing that temperature up, bringing the humidity up and in comes that storm.
  • So have a plan if you hear those tornado sirens go off, pay attention to these forecasts.
  • Yeah, yeah, thanks Mary Kay.
