  • Introduction to Video Content
  • On Friday night, deadly tornadoes tore through Mississippi, resulting in at least 25 deaths and numerous injuries. In response, U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in the area. Search and rescue teams are working diligently to search through the wreckage and help residents in their recovery efforts. In a drone video of the hard-hit Rolling Fork, Mississippi, the extent of the devastation becomes apparent. CNN reporter Ivan Rodriguez is on the ground and describes the scene as unbelievable. Once a trailer park with several homes, all that remains are fragments of people's lives – TV sets, flooring, hair dryers, and pieces of furniture. The destruction is further illustrated by an uprooted tree and twisted metal and cars strewn about. Cleanup efforts have begun, with crews starting to push debris to the side. Additionally, the community aspect is evident, as volunteers from outside the area set up tents to cook and distribute meals and water to those impacted by the tornadoes.
  • Subtitles section
  • Well, U.S. President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in Mississippi after deadly tornadoes ripped through the state Friday night.
  • At least 25 people were killed and dozens were injured in the massive storm.
  • Search and rescue crews are continuing to dig through the rubble and debris as residents try and pick up the pieces.
  • You're looking right now at drone video captured from hard-hit Rolling Fork, Mississippi.
  • And that is where we find CNN reporter Ivan Rodriguez.
  • Now, Ivan, what is the latest on the situation where you are?
  • Natalie, good morning.
  • It's crazy to look at all the video, for example, that drone footage, and then when you're standing here in front of it, it's still hard to believe.
  • But where I am with all this debris used to be a trailer park.
  • Several homes used to stand here.
  • Now you just see pieces of it, things that you would find in your own home, television sets, laminated flooring, hair dryers, parts of sofas.
  • This tree, for example, completely unrooted now on its side, and this is only just a piece of it.
  • Behind me, it continues with pieces of metal twisted and bent, cars that have been toppled over and tossed around.
  • Cleanup efforts right now are beginning.
  • It's the first time we're actually seeing this morning crews come in and begin to push things to the side, get those cleanup efforts going as well.
  • So Ivan, what are you watching for today as crews begin that work?
  • There's a couple of things.
  • Part of it is the cleanup effort that is great to see.
  • The other is the community aspect.
  • We're seeing people come in from out of town and just set up tents aside of the road, cook and hand out meals for folks who were impacted, hand out water as well.
  • That's something that we even heard from the mayor of the city here say that it's so important for people to be able to have just those basic necessities.
  • We also know that Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas is in town.
  • He's going to tour this damage as well.
  • But aside from that, we're also touring something that many folks here did not want to hear, and that's the fact that severe storms are going to be coming later this afternoon and evening as well, mainly across the south of the U.S. and parts of the Midwest as well.
  • So far, we know that more than 20 million people are under those severe storm risks.
  • There is a chance, we've heard from experts say, of tornadoes as well.
  • All right, Ivan, we'll be watching for all of that.
  • Thank you so much.
  • CNN reporter Ivan Rodriguez in Rolling Fork, Mississippi.
