  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Parents from Indiana and Missouri, Beth Clawson, Nathaniel Clawson, Rory Picker, Christina Inskeep, and Ken Inskeep, share their experiences and emphasize the importance of gender-affirming care for their transgender children.
Beth and Nathaniel Clawson, residents of Bloomington, Indiana, have five grown children, one of whom is transgender. When their son was younger, he was an active child who enjoyed playing basketball and riding bikes. However, as he reached puberty, he began to experience distressing symptoms such as anxiety, severe depression, and self-harm. His mental health struggles even led to hospitalization due to suicidal thoughts. Eventually, as a teenager, he realized that he identified as male, not female, leading to his coming out as transgender.
Similarly, Christina Inskeep from Indianapolis, Indiana, tells the story of her 10-year-old transgender daughter. From a young age, her daughter exhibited signs of being transgender, such as wearing her sister's clothes and pretending towels were her long hair. At around the age of three, she started showing signs of withdrawal and depression. Concerned for their child's well-being, Christina and her husband began researching and seeking guidance from their pediatrician. Currently, their gender-affirming care involves a social transition, acknowledging their daughter's gender identity by using the correct pronouns and allowing her to grow out her hair and choose clothes from the girls' section. While they have not pursued medical interventions for puberty yet, they have been attending a gender clinic since their daughter was four years old.
Throughout the video, these parents stress the significance of gender-affirming care for transgender individuals. They share personal accounts of how their children's mental and emotional well-being improved once they were able to live authentically as their true selves. The parents also highlight the importance of seeking support from medical professionals and gender clinics, who can provide guidance and expertise in navigating the various aspects of gender-affirming care.
Their stories demonstrate the profound impact that gender-affirming care can have on transgender children and teenagers. By acknowledging and respecting their gender identity, providing access to appropriate medical interventions when necessary, and creating a supportive environment, parents can play a crucial role in aiding their child's overall well-being.
Ultimately, the experiences of these parents reinforce the importance of acceptance, understanding, and access to gender-affirming care for transgender individuals. Through their advocacy, they hope to raise awareness and create a more inclusive society that supports the unique needs and identities of transgender children.
  • Subtitles section
  • I'm Beth Clawson, and this is Nathaniel Clawson, and we live in Bloomington, Indiana.
  • My name is Rory Picker, niece, and I live in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • Hi, I'm Christina Inskeep, and I live in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • My name is Ken Inskeep.
  • So we've lived in Indiana for more than 40 years.
  • We have five children, all of whom are grown and out of the house.
  • Our fourth child is transgender and came out to us as a teenager, as transgender.
  • When our son was growing up, he was an active kid, liked to go play basketball, ride his bike, do all kinds of things outside, climb the walls even.
  • And then as he grew near adolescence and puberty, things got more distressing.
  • He began to have lots of anxiety, severe depression, began to self-harm.
  • He was even hospitalized for suicidal ideation.
  • So times were really very tough for a while.
  • A little bit later, as a teen, he realized what had been nagging at him all this time was that really he wasn't a girl as we thought, that he was really a boy.
  • Our daughter is 10 years old.
  • She started letting us know that she was transgender really before she could even speak.
  • She would do things like wear her sister's clothes, pretend that towels were her long hair.
  • And when she was about three years old, she started to withdraw and become depressed.
  • So we started doing some research.
  • We talked to her pediatrician.
  • For us, gender-affirming care so far has just been a social transition, using the correct pronouns, letting Kieran grow her hair long, you know, letting her pick her clothes from the girls' section.
  • She has not yet started puberty, so we haven't actually started down that medical route yet.
  • But we have been seeing the gender clinic here in Indiana since she was four.
  • When my son transitioned at the age of seven, it was not something that was particularly eventful.
  • It involved him changing his name, changing his pronouns.
  • Suddenly when I went to Target, instead of going to the girls' section, I went to the boys' section.
  • There was a haircut, but it's really what we call a social transition.
  • It was all of the ways in which he existed with his family and with his friends.
  • And that started to become more complicated for us once my son was in third grade, and we started to see anti-trans bills being proposed in the Missouri State Legislature.
  • We consulted with the medical team that we put together, the counselors and doctors, to see what we could do to help our son.
  • And the real turning point for this kid was when he could finally get testosterone.
  • To every day be worried that today may be their last day, and to when you look in the eyes, the sparkle is gone.
  • They look dead in their eyes.
  • And it is just so heart-wrenching as a parent to see your kid in such agony and hopelessness.
  • And it was through gender-affirming care with good doctors and mental health professionals and the like that he saw hope.
  • As soon as we started affirming her as a girl, her mental health increased greatly.
  • I do, we do notice with the onset of puberty coming any time now, her distress rises greatly.
  • When the doctors tell us that she is starting to hit puberty, she will go on puberty blockers.
  • And that just gives her time to Work things out.
  • When we talk about gender-affirming care, we talk about a wide range of medical care.
  • It's involved our doctors supporting us in using the correct pronouns and having the correct name for my son, in giving language for that, and helping us identify therapists who could talk through this,
  • Both with my husband and I, and then with our son, making sure that he has the support to understand what this means for himself and what this could mean for health care down the road.
  • As he gets older, what we're looking at is first puberty blockers.
  • So medication that would prevent puberty from happening in the natural course, at its core really to buy us time.
  • What we don't want is to have unnecessary and sometimes invasive surgeries.
  • And so we want to be able to push a pause button to make sure that we're not making these decisions at young ages, at ages like 11, 12, 13, that we're able to delay puberty until the time when we, our son,
  • His therapist, his endocrinologist, all of the doctors, his pediatrician, all the doctors that are supporting us in this, can give us all the information so that we and he can make this informed decision before starting on what would later then be hormone therapy.
  • It's hard, sorry.
  • It's been really tough on us as a family.
  • The idea that the state of Indiana wants to take away our rights as parents to make medical decisions for our kid with our doctors, and it's really painful.
  • One of the hardest things for me is watching Kieran see these decisions be made about her.
  • And it causes much more harm to her than even her fear of going through the wrong puberty is this lack of control in her life and this fear that people aren't looking out for her and that they don't want her to be healthy.
  • It's just, it's really hard for her and it's really hard for us to watch her wrestle with that.
  • Even if it's not intended to be cruel, this bill that would ban affirming care, all gender affirming care for anyone under 18, it is cruel.
  • Here comes the legislature saying, okay, your child's been living as a girl for seven years, but they can't, they can't go on puberty blockers when they hit puberty because we think it's best that they don't.
  • Suddenly, the child's going to have to go through male puberty instead of pausing for a moment so they can think about what the next steps might be.
  • That's just outrageous.
  • It's outrageous.
  • And it's very devastating to our families.
  • I just cannot express what it means as a parent when all you want to do is give your child the absolute best care possible.
  • And when you have healthcare professionals who are working with you, who have gotten to know you, who have been talking about plans months and years out, understanding what that is going to look like and helping you to plan that road ahead,
  • To know what it is that you're looking towards, to think that you could then lose that and that the government could be telling you that they know better than this entire team of people to stop you from accessing life-saving medical care,
  • That in and of itself is terrifying.
  • Until this year, my family and I have not really talked seriously about going anywhere other than St. Louis.
  • We've loved our lives here, but more and more, as this rhetoric has become more harmful and more insidious, as a parent, I'm just torn about, could I possibly keep my child in a place that tells him that he's not wanted and that tries to criminalize his very existence?
  • If you're a kid, who do you want making decisions for you?
  • Do you want legislators you don't know and who don't know you voting on your care?
  • Or do you want your parents, who have known you and loved you and raised you since birth, to make whatever difficult decisions need to be made, talking to you along the way, but to instead strip our parental rights and put our kids,
  • Basically have the legislature adopt them to make medical decisions for them.
  • And then the legislators leave the scene and we're the ones who have to deal with the consequences.
  • They're not going to show up for the funeral for our kid.
  • They don't pay the burial expenses.
  • They don't have the empty seat at the table every single day of their life, and they aren't wrapped with guilt over what more could we have done.
