  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The family of an Afghan-American businessman, Mahmoud Habibi, is pleading for his release after he has been held by the Taliban for over a year in Afghanistan. In an exclusive interview, Mahmoud's brother, Ahmad Habibi, shared their story in the hopes of raising awareness and putting pressure on the Taliban to release him. Ahmad and Mahmoud are very close, being only two years apart in age and considering each other best friends. While many of their family members were able to leave Afghanistan over the last decade, Mahmoud stayed behind to work for his country and the future of Afghanistan. However, in August of 2022, Mahmoud was taken by the Taliban in Kabul, and his family has had no information about him since then. Mahmoud's wife, Zulhijja, and their daughter, Horeyn, were able to escape to the United States, but their lives have been in turmoil ever since. Zulhijja, a former doctor in Kabul, is now studying to restart her career in America, but without her husband's income, she is dependent on her family for support. The stress and uncertainty have made it difficult for her to focus on her studies. She learned about Mahmoud's detention while they were in Qatar at a temporary U.S. military base for Afghan evacuees. Zulhijja doesn't want Mahmoud to continue working in Afghanistan due to the dangers involved. The last moments they spent together were months before Mahmoud returned to Kabul for work and subsequently went missing. Mahmoud, a civil aviation expert and engineering prodigy, had the option to live anywhere but chose to stay in Afghanistan to contribute to his country. Now, his family is desperately pleading for his release, hoping that international attention and pressure can help reunite them once again.

  • He succeeded Osama bin Laden as the leader of al-Qaida and was a force behind many of the group's terror attacks, including 9-11.
  • Do you think that had anything to do with his arrest and detention?
  • When we spoke to the employees, and they said that the Taliban asked them about the strike, the strike on al-Zawahiri, so we have a little sense that the company or the arrests might have to do something with the al-Zawahiri strike.
  • You think that's what the Taliban believe?
  • We think that that's what the Taliban believes, yes.
  • In response to questions from the news hour, ARX Communications said ARX was not nor any subsidiary involved with any strike on al-Zawahiri.
  • They confirmed 31 of their personnel, including Mahmoud, were detained in August of 2022, and 29 have been subsequently released.

  • Mahmoud's family has met with senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, special presidential envoy for hostage affairs Roger Carstens, and national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
  • U.S. officials tell the news hour they cannot comment directly on any details of the case.
  • To date, the Taliban have not confirmed Mahmoud's detention.
  • I have been talking to the U.S. government, and they are supporting us, but, sadly, we have no updates from the Taliban side.
  • You believe your brother could be held as a bargaining chip?
  • We think so, because if the Taliban, they are not acknowledging him so far, they might use him to bargain with the U.S. government.
  • It's been a year now, and there's been no update, and there's no confirmation that anyone has him.
  • I have to ask a difficult question, which is, how can you be sure that he is still alive?
