  • Green Day Got Busted By the FCC for Having a Pirate Radio StationDo you ever do that thing where, like, you record a song and then play it through a tiny speaker so, like, you'd be hearing it on your car radio? Back in the day, we used to do that. We had an Auratone and a pirate radio station hooked up to our studio. We would play our recordings on the radio to hear how they sounded with the radio compression. But our pirate radio station didn't just stay within the confines of our studio. It somehow ended up in an FCC van. We would cut in on various stations, causing chaos and even accidentally causing a blackout in Los Feliz. We learned the hard way that you're not allowed to do that. By overpowering other people's legitimate radio stations, we were infringing on their rights as licensed broadcasters. Our antics weren't overlooked by the neighbors either. One of them had a cordless phone and all he could hear on it was our radio station. It was clear that we had to face consequences for our actions. When we returned to our rooftop studio, we found an FCC card on the door. They had discovered our illegal radio activities and left a warning that we better shut down the station or face the consequences. They threatened to come after us and find us if we didn't comply. It was a clear message that we were breaking the law.Eventually, the FCC came back and demanded to see everything related to the pirate radio station. However, our crew had locked up all the equipment and technical gear in a trailer. Without a warrant, the FCC couldn't force us to hand it over. It was a small victory for us, but it didn't mean we were out of the woods yet.Reflecting on the experience, we have to admit that there was a certain thrill in going against the rules and pushing boundaries. It reminded us of that famous scene from The Godfather where a horse head is sent as a warning. While we weren't necessarily scared, we knew we were engaging in illegal activities and had to be cautious. In the end, we learned our lesson. We stopped operating the pirate radio station and focused on our music career. The experience, however, remains a fond memory of our rebellious youth.

  • Do you ever do that thing where, like, you record a song and then play it through a tiny speaker so, like, you'd be hearing it on your car radio?
  • We used to.
  • We used to have what they call an Auratone, but we haven't done that.
  • We used to have a pirate radio station that was hooked up to our studio, so then we would play it through to just hear what it sounded like, the radio compression and what it sounded like.
  • The pirate radio station didn't go to anybody, did it?
  • Or did it go through, like, the town or the community?
  • It ended up in an FCC van.
  • We used to cut in on all sorts of stations.
  • Oh that's badass.
  • Yeah, and then we accidentally caused a blackout in Los Feliz.
  • You guys are nuts.
  • Yeah, you're not allowed to do that because people who buy a radio station, you are overpowering their station.
  • Yeah.
  • The neighbor's had a cordless phone and he's like, all I hear on my cordless phone is your radio station, man.
  • We came back and the FCC had put a card on the door.
  • Yeah, because it was on my rooftop where we were staying.
  • We were recording the XXI Century Breakdown and all of a sudden I looked down and there was like an FCC card that was right there.
  • They knew exactly where it was coming from.
  • And what were they saying?
  • Like, Hey dudes, you better shut down this radio station.
  • We're going to fucking come after you and find you.
  • Right.
  • They eventually came back and wanted to see everything, but our guys had actually locked it all up in a trailer.
  • And then, um, they couldn't, they couldn't unlock the trailer without a, without a warrant.
  • Yeah.
  • It is like that when the guy and the godfather, when they send the horse head inside the bed, were you scared at all?
  • But did you, you know what I mean?
  • You're breaking the law.
  • I mean, it's, it's, you weren't scared.
  • It was just like, Hey, fuck this.
  • I'm going to do it.
  • No, we weren't.
  • We didn't really scare.
  • We just took it down.
  • You know, we, they, they, they, they were onto us.
  • So we took it down, but yeah, we still have the equipment.
  • How cool for the neighborhood though, like, Hey, Green Day set up a little, uh, radio station just for our, our, our area.
  • No, we, we used to do it down in like Newport beach, uh, in Orange County.
  • And, um, we set it up pretty powerful and like, like, so all of like the surf shops and the surfers would, you know, we'd play like the blues and punk rock and stuff.
  • So they would, and when it was on twenty four seven, so we'd have like playlists that would kept going.
