  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The power and heartbreak behind the song that won the Tiny Desk ContestWander Eye, the song that won the Tiny Desk Contest, carries a familiar feeling for its creators. The band members, Kai and Nathan, have experienced the grief of letting go of past versions of themselves throughout their lives. During the time that Kai's mother-in-law was on hospice in Idaho, the couple traveled between Utah and Idaho, a four-hour drive, to be with her. It was during this period that Kai had a melody in mind, which quickly revealed itself to be about death given the circumstances. Recognizing the significance of the song, Kai invited her husband Nathan, whose mother was passing, to write the lyrics for Wander Eye. Nathan, who had grappled with leaving the Mormon church, became the central figure in his family with regard to religious beliefs. The couple found it interesting how Mormonism, being a relatively young religion, exhibited a strong sense of dualism, where one is either fully committed or completely out. Kai expresses gratitude for the positive teachings of Mormonism, but also acknowledges that it fell short in accepting and loving everyone unconditionally. The decision to leave the church was motivated by their desire to treat everyone around them with love and acceptance, without any conditions. 2020, fueled by the pandemic, brought about their official departure from the church. Through their music and personal journeys, Kai and Nathan aim to embody the teachings they found in Mormonism by embracing and incorporating everyone, including their LGBTQ friends and queer band members, into their lives.
  • Subtitles section
  • This is actually more of a familiar feeling than I thought it would be.
  • Like, I've grieved past versions of myself throughout my whole life.
  • Wander Eye was written during the time that my mother-in-law was on hospice in Idaho.
  • And Nathan and I were going back and forth between Utah and Idaho, it's like about a four-hour drive.
  • And during that time, I just had this melody coming into mind.
  • And pretty quickly, just because of the circumstances, I think I realized that this song, this melody was about death.
  • The whole Structure of the song.
  • And was going to start writing the lyrics, and then I'm like, actually, I think it would make more sense, like, I'd love to invite my husband Nathan to write the lyrics for Wander Eye, because it was his mom that was passing,
  • And he was, I think, the main one centered on in his family for leaving the church.
  • I think what's interesting is that the church is a very young religion.
  • It's not like Judaism, it's not like Catholicism, and I feel like because Mormonism is very young for a religion, there's a lot more dualism of, you know, either you're all in or you're all out.
  • Thank you so much, Kai.
  • Really love where Mormonism brought me to introduce me to teachings that are supposed to love everybody, that are supposed to incorporate everybody, and it couldn't follow me to how much I wanted to take that seriously,
  • To friends that are LGBTQ, a lot of the band members are queer, And it just couldn't follow me to where I wanted to go for my own personal journey of how I want to treat anybody around me without conditions.
  • And we both officially stopped going to church around the pandemic, so 2020.
  • Like, Blaine and I were talking earlier today, like, we've all been stressed in our own different ways, and we're not even, like, the kind of the main focus of this whole thing.
  • Like, I can look forward to July 10th and be like, ah, I can get back to my routine, you know, like, go back to work.
  • Not like I'm looking forward to it, but it's like, there's like something, like a return to some sort of normalcy.
  • That you can look forward to.
  • That I can look forward to.
  • It's like, oh yeah, this tour is crazy and, you know, fun, but also, like, so out of the norm.
  • But then, for you, I feel like...
  • I'm like, I'm delving into the unknown.
  • It's like, okay, after tour, maybe I'm like, maybe I'm signed to a label.
  • Maybe I'm, like, assembling a team of people who are going to be helping me.
  • Days to the minute, mmm, mmm.
  • Something that I think stood out to me when I first was getting to know him was on our first date, when I told him that I'm a singer and I'm also a college dropout, which I was ashamed to say because I've had,
  • Like, reactions to that.
  • But I remember Nathan, when I told him that, he was like, just so you know, Emma, like, he's seen me before.
  • We've performed in similar spaces.
  • And he was like, I 100% believe in you.
  • Uh, Little Moon, you've won the Tiny Desk Contest of 2023!
  • This Journey Has been, it's one of those things where it's like, like, I don't think it's caught up to me yet how much my life has changed.
  • The 2023 Tiny Desk Contest is presented by Capital One and supported by Guayaquil Yerba Mate, who thank NPR Music for creating a platform to search for the next great undiscovered artist, Big Dream's Tiny Desk.
