  • How To Increase Your Self-Confidence - The 'Yes And...' Rule
Improvement Pill conducted a study in 2017 that showed an activity taking only an hour or two per week can significantly boost confidence, creativity, social skills, and reduce social anxiety. The study involved 268 students participating in a 10-week school-based improv theater program. Surveys taken before and after the program revealed that students who attended saw a significant improvement in social anxiety, creativity, and a decrease in depression.
So, what is this activity? It's improv, an acting game where participants role-play as different characters in various scenarios. The players take turns acting and adding information, further developing the story.
One of the key principles of improv is the 'yes and' rule. This rule states that players must accept whatever new information is introduced into the scene by other players and build upon it. For example, if someone claims to be an evil villain who has kidnapped your mom, you must act as if that is true. This rule teaches you to be open-minded, which is a highly attractive trait. Being open to different beliefs and experiences allows you to connect with a wide range of people. When others see that you are accepting and open, they will feel more comfortable and be less hesitant to express themselves.
Additionally, learning how to use the 'yes and' rule in improv translates to having more fun and spontaneous moments in real life. By accepting and building upon new information, you become more adaptable and open to unexpected opportunities, leading to a more enjoyable and fulfilling life.

  • Improvement Pill here.
  • What if I told you that there was an activity that takes only an hour or two per week to do, that can drastically increase your confidence, creativity, social skills, lower your social anxiety, and overall make you into a more fun and attractive person?
  • Well, a study conducted in 2017 took 268 students and had them participate in a 10-week school-based improv theater program.
  • They had the students take surveys before and after the program was completed and found that students who showed up to the program saw a significant improvement in their social anxiety, creativity, and it even lowered their depression.
  • Yes, what I'm talking about today is improv.
  • Now, for those of you that don't know what this is, it's basically an acting game where you role-play as different characters in a wide variety of scenarios.
  • The players take turns acting and adding more information into the scene, further developing the story.
  • And there are three reasons why this is so powerful.
  • Reason number one, the yes and rule.
  • One of the most important rules in improv is what's called the yes and rule.
  • Basically, you must agree with whatever new information other players introduce into the scene and add onto it.
  • If someone says they're an evil villain who just kidnapped your mom, you have to act as if that actually happened.
  • This teaches you to become a more open-minded person, which is one of the most attractive traits out there.
  • Someone who is open to everything is someone that can connect with almost everyone.
  • When people see that you are accepting of all beliefs and open to new experiences, they will be less hesitant to hold back.
  • They will feel more comfortable around you.
  • Learning how to use yes and also teaches you how to have more fun spontaneous moments in real life.
  • I was once at a bar that had seats that could spin.
  • A woman sitting next to me spun my seat by accident while looking in her bag and apologized.
  • Now, I could've just said, it's okay.
  • But instead, I looked at her and I said, spin me more.
  • Two minutes later, we were spinning each other like kids on a playground trying to see who could walk in straight line.
  • It was loads of fun and it was all because I added onto the accidental scenario that she placed us in.
  • That's the power of yes and.
  • Reason number two, embrace the fool.
  • When you do improv, you will find yourself in ridiculous scenarios.
  • You might have to play someone who just got their towel stolen in the shower, where you're forced to run back to your room acting like you're naked.
  • When you have to act out embarrassing moments like this, you are purposely acting like a fool.
  • And this is a good thing.
  • Because we're all scared of saying something or acting a certain way that would cause people to look down on us in real life.
  • However much social anxiety you have right now is determined by how scared you are of looking like a fool in real life.
  • By purposely putting on the fool's hat, you'll learn how to become more comfortable in front of others.
  • If you can pretend to be a dinosaur in front of 10 people, sparking up a conversation with a stranger in the grocery will feel easy in comparison.
  • And as an added bonus, you will gain the ability to be the life of the party.
  • Take a look at this famous clip.
  • Everyone is scared of looking stupid so no one's dancing.
  • Then this one guy who doesn't mind looking silly, gets up and starts dancing like crazy.
  • Soon others join him and it eventually grows into a huge party.
  • When you learn to embrace the fool, it becomes magnetic.
  • Others want to be around you because letting go is fun.
  • If you're going to try to do this, you have to be enjoying yourself in the moment and you have to do so confidently without looking at others to see if they're okay with it.
  • You got to be in the zone, having a blast, and then others will come.
  • And finally, reason number 3. Endless conversations.
  • One of the biggest issues people have when socializing is not knowing what to say next.
  • They might have a couple of ideas in their mind, but by the time they decide how to respond, the conversation has already moved forward onto something else.
  • Personally, I almost never run out of things to say.
  • If I like someone's shirt, I'll blurt it out.
  • If I don't agree with something someone says, I'll make a comment.
  • I'm just speaking my mind, only occasionally second-doubting myself when I have a highly controversial thought.
  • When you do improv, you have to quickly act because everyone else is waiting on you.
  • If someone tells you that they just injected you with dinosaur serum, you have to quickly think of what happens next and react.
  • Over time, you learn to speak your mind, or in this case, act out whatever pops up in your mind.
  • This trains you to instinctively further conversations in real life instead of overthinking things.
  • So if you want to improve your social skills, I suggest you look up the nearest improv class.
  • Most large cities have a couple of Facebook groups that focus on them.
  • Just search for it online.
