  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The 2023 U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club will feature a challenging par-3 11th hole. Renowned golf course architect, Gil Hanse, breaks down the key architectural features of this hole.
One of the most important features of the 11th hole is a ridge that runs along the side of the approach. This ridge creates a unique design element known as a 'reverse redan,' where players can actually use the slope to play their ball. Unlike a traditional redan hole, where the green is receptive and the ball feeds away, this green kicks back towards the players. However, the slope is designed in a way that it only helps players when the hole location is towards the front. If the pin is in the back, the slope won't be of any advantage.
The ridge also poses an interesting challenge for golfers. The closer they try to get to the green to utilize the slope, the smaller the margin of error becomes. Players only have a three or four-yard area to hit the ball into in order to get it to kick and feed onto the green. Going over the back of the green will result in the ball rolling down into a trough.
Another factor to consider is the rough surrounding the green. Due to heavy foot traffic exiting the green, the rough is compacted and pushed down, making it difficult for the ball to hold. Instead, the ball will continue to roll further away, creating a challenging recovery shot.
Once on the green, players will face interesting hole locations that add to the difficulty of the hole. The 11th hole at the Los Angeles Country Club is sure to provide an exciting and challenging experience for golfers participating in the 2023 U.S. Open.
  • Subtitles section
  • Here on the approach to the par 3 11th hole at the Los Angeles Country Club, one of the more important architectural features of this hole is this ridge that I'm walking along the side of.
  • Some of you might be familiar with the term the redan, but this is a reverse redan where you can actually play your ball off of this slope.
  • Unlike the real redan where the green actually is receptive and the ball feeds away, this green actually comes and kicks back towards us.
  • But if you look at the way that this slope is pitched, it will only take a ball and feed it towards the front hole location.
  • If the pin is anywhere in the back or the hole locations towards the back, this slope won't help you in any way shape or form.
  • So if a golfer thinks they're going to get a kick off of this and allow it to feed back there, they're not going to be able to get it all the way to the back because of the slope.
  • One of the more interesting things about this ridge is that it feeds off of the back.
  • So the closer you try to get to the green to utilize it, the smaller your margin of error is.
  • Ultimately you've got about a three or four yard area here to hit it into to get the ball to kick and feed onto the green.
  • If you go over the back, the ball will feed down into this trough.
  • And one of the little secrets about the rough out here is that this rough tends to get compacted and pushed down because all the traffic exits the green here.
  • So it's not going to hold a golf ball.
  • It's actually going to let a golf ball feed further and further away from you.
  • So you're going to have the opportunity to have a much more difficult recovery shot.
  • So if your ball has found the green and you've worked your way down onto it, now we've got a really interesting hole location set up.
  • Whether it's front where you can utilize that slope and obviously the hole is going to play shorter, you're going to have room over the fronting greenside bunkers to land a ball short and let it kick on.
  • And with the entirety of the ground actually feeling like it's falling, falling, falling in that direction, the fact that the green is tilted up, it fools your eye to make you think that actually this green is not as uphill as you would think.
  • So putts from the front of the green to the back of the green, it'd be really interesting to see if players hit them hard enough to get them up there because there's significant slope feeding in that direction.
  • As we've talked about the greens at Los Angeles Country Club, there's not a ton of big broad undulations, but there's tons of slope in them.
  • So reading and figuring how much a green is going to break with this visual deception of the green falling towards us when the ground is falling away, I think will provide tons of challenges on this 11th hole.
