  • Introduction to Video Content
  • A powerful winter storm has hit the West Coast, bringing heavy rain and snow to several areas. One of the hardest-hit cities was Denver, Colorado, where the National Weather Service reported snowfall at a rate of up to two inches per hour. This storm is known as an atmospheric river, which occurs when moisture is carried north from the Earth's tropics. CBS News correspondent Carter Evans explains that an atmospheric river appears as a river of moisture in the sky, picking up moisture along the Pacific and then dumping it on the West Coast. The recent storm caused significant damage in Oregon, with high tides and flooding in areas of Washington and Seattle. However, the rain brought some relief to California, which is currently facing severe drought conditions. While the additional moisture is beneficial, water managers indicate that the ground is absorbing most of the rain and there hasn't been a significant impact on reservoirs yet. Despite this, the winter storm has had a substantial impact on the West Coast and continues to affect the region.
  • Subtitles section
  • A massive amount of snow was also dropped on Denver, Colorado Wednesday night, part of a larger storm pummeling the West Coast.
  • The National Weather Service said that snow was falling at a rate of up to two inches per hour in Denver, Colorado.
  • Meteorologists call it an atmospheric river.
  • That's when moisture is carried up north from the Earth's tropics.
  • CBS News correspondent Carter Evans joins me now with more from Los Angeles.
  • Carter, let's start off with that atmospheric river.
  • Tell us what this is and the implications of this atmospheric river on the weather out west.
  • Well, when you take a look at one of these atmospheric rivers on a satellite, it really does look like a river, and it is a river of moisture in the sky.
  • It just picks it up along the Pacific and then, like a fire hose, dumps it on the West Coast.
  • For this most recent one that happened a couple of days ago, that one hit Oregon really badly when it came in.
  • We had really high tides when it came in, and so you had all those high winds pushing water in.
  • You had flooding in certain areas of Washington, Seattle.
  • That's where the most damage was from this most recent atmospheric river.
  • We did get some rain down here, and of course, that's a big help here in California where we are under a severe and extreme drought situation.
  • A severe drought situation, and I heard you reporting earlier in the day, Carter, about how actually, in some ways, it's beneficial to have received some of that additional moisture.
  • Yeah, definitely, and we need it.
  • What's happening right now, though, is that the ground is saturating and soaking up most of the rain that's coming down.
  • So, I talked to water managers.
  • They're saying we're not seeing a lot of impact on our reservoirs yet.
  • Where we are seeing the big impact right now is the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada, 162 percent of normal.
  • That is great news.
  • They say they'd hope to see double what we normally get, and that would be a drought-buster situation, and in order to reach that, we'd need about four more storms like the one we just had.
  • So, in a good news situation, I guess, we're getting another one of those storms over the weekend.
  • It's going to be very wet over the next week as we get pummeled with another atmospheric river.
  • They also call them Pineapple Express, and perhaps another one even later in the week.
  • So that's going to be two.
  • If that's the case, we'll need two more, and then we'll be making some serious headway on this drought, and that would be great.
  • A glass half-empty, half-full sort of situation there.
  • All right.
  • Carter Evans, thank you.
  • Sure.
