  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Man Guilty of Killing 2 Bicyclists, Causing 10-Car Pile-Up Will Serve 16 Years in Prison
A man who plowed into two bicyclists, killing them on a busy road in November, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison. Marco Benitez, aged 27, was driving under the influence on East Flamingo near Maryland Parkway when the incident occurred. Emotions ran high in the courtroom as Benitez's fate was determined.
The victims' family, who were inches away from Benitez, wasted no time in expressing their belief that he should be behind bars for as long as possible. The facts of the case were described as extreme, and the family demanded the maximum consecutive sentence for Benitez.
On November 4th last year, Benitez was driving recklessly when he crashed into 36-year-old Antonio Zambala and his girlfriend, 37-year-old Karina Lopez, who were riding their bikes. Both had recently relocated to Las Vegas. The court was shown a dash cam video illustrating the horrific moment of impact, as Benitez's truck hit a car, briefly stopped, and then struck the bicyclists before driving away.
Multiple opportunities to halt the vehicle were ignored by Benitez. Escaping from the scene was a deliberate choice. Benitez, in his defense, claimed that he was not in control of his actions that evening. The victim's sister expressed her opposition to any leniency towards Benitez, stating that even the maximum number of years in prison would not compare to the lifelong sentence her family had to endure. Zambala also left behind a teenage son, and a family friend spoke on his behalf, highlighting the loss of a mentor and compass in life.
Benitez has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years, but he may spend up to 40 years behind bars. The victims' family now seeks closure and healing with the commencement of this sentence.
