  • US and Philippines conclude their largest ever military exercises
Thousands of US and Philippine troops have recently wrapped up one of the largest ever military exercises conducted by both countries. This comes after a deal was announced earlier in the year for US forces to have access to an increased number of bases in the Philippines, including one near Taiwan. The Philippines is seeking to strengthen its defense ties with the United States. The exercises were held in order to simulate the defense of an island from potential aggressors, serving as a display of the two allies' military capabilities. However, the exercises carry much larger geopolitical implications.
Located at the northern frontier of the Philippines, this region has frequently faced challenges due to its geographical isolation. Inhabitants of this area endure impenetrable limestone cliffs and weather-related isolation that can last for weeks. Now, in addition to these challenges, they face a new threat - caught between two superpowers competing for dominance over the surrounding seas.
Chinese ships have been encroaching upon Philippine fishing waters located just south of Taiwan. Fishermen like Cyrus, who rely on these waters for their livelihood, have witnessed an increasing presence of Chinese vessels. Previously, Chinese fishermen and even the Chinese coast guard would harass the local fishing community. This has raised concerns among the native Ivatans, who have historically made a living through fishing and farming on the island. They only take what they need and strive to maintain peace in the region. However, the proximity to Taiwan has made them both a strategic ally to the United States and a vulnerable target.
The joint military exercises carried out by the US and the Philippines were not just a show of force. They aimed to strengthen the US presence in the region and build a reliable coalition of allies, including South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Australia. The objective is to ensure stability and deter any potential conflict with China. However, there are concerns that an increased US presence could further provoke the People's Republic of China.
The Filipino people, including the residents of Santa Ana, a sleepy town in the far north, understand the complex dynamics at play. Santa Ana is home to a small naval base, one of the four new Filipino sites that the US can access. While the base provides the town with potential economic opportunities, there are fears that it could also make the area a target. The locals hold mixed feelings about choosing between their neighbor, who has never been an enemy, and their long-standing ally.
Ultimately, the people living on these islands try to remain unaffected by the political tensions and enjoy the simplicity of island life. They understand the delicate balance at play and pray daily for peace and stability in the region.
