  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Tupperware, once a household name synonymous with plastic food containers, has recently issued a warning about its potential collapse unless it secures funding. The 77-year-old brand, which is known for its iconic Tupperware parties, has struggled to adapt to the digital age and appeal to a younger audience. According to food and drink journalist Josh Barrett, Tupperware's failure to reinvent itself for the modern era and establish a strong online presence has left it lagging behind its competitors. While Tupperware continues to have a loyal customer base, its outdated business model and lack of social media presence have hindered its growth and profitability. This article will explore the reasons behind Tupperware's decline and the challenges it faces in a rapidly evolving market.

  • Now, sometimes a brand name becomes so huge, it actually becomes synonymous with the product itself.
  • Think about Hoover, for example, or Tupperware.
  • But for Tupperware, those were the glory days.
  • Today, the 77-year-old firm said there was a substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern.
  • Well, for generations, of course, there were Tupperware parties.
  • The company had booming sales.
  • So the big question, what's gone wrong?
  • Joining us now is Josh Barrett.
  • He's a food and drink journalist.
  • Josh, good to talk to you.
  • What did go wrong for Tupperware?
  • I think that today, we live in a digital age, and Tupperware is a heritage brand that for 77 years has been, you know, synonymous with households, but it hasn't adapted.
  • And we've got a brand that is known, but doesn't really have any appeal to a younger audience.
  • You say it's a heritage brand, and it strikes me that when it comes to something like branding, that's quite a good thing to have.
  • But are you suggesting it's failed to reinvent itself for the new way that we live?
  • Well, the last Tupperware party held in the UK took place in 2003.
  • And that was when it had a sales force of about 1500 people here in the UK. That's a long time ago.
  • And that has always been its business model.
  • It doesn't really have a face on social media, Instagram, there's no Tupperware UK, there's one in India, but that's only got about 50,000 followers.
  • And younger people, they buy things online.
  • That's how they connect with a brand.
  • That's how they learn about new products.
  • Everything's online.
  • And Tupperware, as known as it is, hasn't really moved forward.
  • And it's become quite a stage company.
  • Yeah, and one would also assume, and we've been talking about this in the newsroom today, that a lot of people might be ordering things like deliveries, takeaways, they come pre-packaged in their own Tupperware,
  • Don't they?
  • In a plastic pot of some sort that you probably end up reusing.
  • Well, yeah, I mean, when Tupperware first came into existence, there wasn't really takeaways.
  • There might have been pizza, I don't know, I wasn't around.
  • But yeah, most takeaways now come in plastic containers.
  • And actually, another big thing here is price.
  • One thing you can get free takeaway containers and use those or you can go into a supermarket and buy something that Tupperware might charge £15 for, for £2 or £3. So the appeal really isn't there for younger consumers.
  • Yeah, and you'll know about this in your job.
  • You know, to stay relevant, you've got to keep reinventing, you've got to do new stuff, you've got to be cool, you've got to be maybe subject to influencers and all that sort of thing.
  • Is there any hope for Tupperware or is the ship sailed?
  • Well, I'd hope so.
  • Because, you know, it's been known for so long.
  • It's an interesting and cool brand.
  • Well, it's not cool anymore.
  • That's entirely the point.
  • But it is an interesting one.
  • And I wouldn't ever really want to see a business like that go.
  • But it does have to adapt.
  • It does have to move forward.
  • And especially given it's built on plastic.
  • We live in a world that's trying to do away with that product, that material.
  • So it's tried, it's kind of moved into other utensils and equipment, you know, takeaway cups that you take on the train, kitchen utensils, tongs, whatever.
  • But it's got to move pretty quickly.
  • And it doesn't seem to be.
  • I think it needs to get onto TikTok and start maneuvering with a little bit more fervor.
