  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The winter storm that hit much of the country over the Christmas holiday has caused significant damage and loss of life. The storm, known as a bomb cyclone, is responsible for at least 38 deaths in seven states. It has also left over 60,000 utility customers without power and dumped record amounts of snow in some areas. Buffalo, New York, was particularly hard hit, with 18 people losing their lives due to hurricane force winds and over 43 inches of snow. The blizzard conditions trapped people in their cars and homes, and even caused fire trucks in the city to become stranded. Seattle in the West experienced an ice storm that led to chaos, with cars sliding and people struggling to walk without slipping. Even the South was not spared from the cold, as bone chilling temperatures left parts of Texas covered in ice. The harsh weather conditions also resulted in over 12,000 flight cancellations and stranded many migrants in the streets of El Paso. However, there is some relief on the horizon, as meteorologist Jordan Steele predicts a milder winter storm in the upcoming days. While there may be heavy rain and flood concerns in the West, there will also be some intermountain snow. Overall, temperatures are expected to rise, providing some respite for those affected by the previous storm.
  • Subtitles section
  • Good morning, everyone.
  • I'm Tanya Rivero.
  • We begin with the deadly winter storm that gave much of the country a freezing cold Christmas.
  • The bomb cyclone is blamed for at least 38 deaths in seven states.
  • More than 60,000 utility customers are still without power and some areas got record amounts of snow.
  • At least 18 people were killed in Buffalo, New York, when the storm brought hurricane force winds and dumped more than 43 inches of snow.
  • The blizzard trapped people in their cars and homes.
  • Road conditions were so bad, nearly every fire truck in the city was stranded.
  • Now, in the West, an ice storm brought chaos to Seattle.
  • This video shows cars sliding and people struggling to walk without slipping.
  • Now, the South did not escape the cold either.
  • Bone chilling temperatures left parts of Texas covered in ice.
  • In El Paso, many migrants remained on the streets where they endured temperatures in the teens.
  • The brutal weekend weather caused extra trouble at airports.
  • More than 12,000 flights were canceled.
  • So to see what's ahead, let's bring in meteorologist Jordan Steele with our partners at the Weather Channel.
  • Jordan, good morning.
  • Well, good Monday morning to you.
  • Here's the big headline for this next winter storm.
  • It's going to be much more milder.
  • Temperatures are going to be on the rise.
  • That could be good for so many folks.
  • Now, here's the problem.
  • Out West, we could be looking at a lot of rain and that could be bringing in some flood concerns.
  • Yes, there will be intermountain snow, but we have a series of storms coming in and temperatures are going to fluctuate a little bit.
  • So here out in the West, we've got this high flood threat.
  • You could see from Seattle, actually the northern part of the international border, all the way down through California, the flood potential, the swollen rivers, even maybe even some landslides.
  • It could be possible because a lot of the snow that we just had in the ice is going to melt.
  • And even up in the high Cascades, we could be looking at rain before it transitions to snow with the passage of the cold front.
  • So we'll have a series of systems.
  • That was the first one.
  • The next one coming into midweek, much more potent diving all the way down into California.
  • Once again, the amount of snow looks very healthy.
  • We could see some heavy moisture all the way down into the desert Southwest.
  • But as promised, temperatures will be climbing as we work our way throughout the week.
  • Now for the latest coverage, you guys can watch the Weather Channel on cable or live on your favorite TV streaming devices.
  • Tonya, there it is.
  • Back to you.
  • Jordan, thanks.
  • Glad those temperatures are rising just a bit.
