  • House Republicans are preparing to pass a debt ceiling bill in the next three weeks, according to Representative Patrick McHenry. In a upcoming session, the Financial Services Committee will be questioning SEC Chairman Gary Gensler regarding documents related to charges against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Free. McHenry, the committee chairman, aims to shed light on Gensler's extensive regulatory agenda, which includes 53 major rulemakings that could burden the market and economy in a globally competitive environment. McHenry criticizes the lack of clarity in Gensler's approach to the digital asset ecosystem and highlights the excessive number of rulemakings compared to his predecessors. He believes that Gensler's agenda will result in costly and inadequate regulations, while other countries, particularly in Asia and Europe, are attracting digital asset businesses with more sensible regulatory regimes. McHenry aims to bring attention to these issues for the benefit of the American economy.

  • OK, later this morning, the Financial Services Committee is going to be grilling SEC Chairman Gary Gensler on documents they're looking for related to charges filed against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Free.
  • Joining us right now with a preview, Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry.
  • Good morning to you.
  • What are you looking for?
  • What are you hoping to get out of today's session?
  • Well, first, I think we want to expose the rapid and aggressive regulatory agenda that Gary Gensler has with 53 major rulemakings by this agency that cost that the market has to bear and the economy has to bear for this in a really competitive world.
  • And the lack of clarity at the same time that...
  • What do you mean by that?
  • With the digital asset ecosystem.
  • What I mean by that, if you have his two previous predecessors as chair of the SEC, did half that number of rulemaking.
  • There's a massive amount of change that this chair is trying to drive, and it has a lot of expense in the markets.
  • And he's giving a limited amount of time for actually good comments.
  • So we're going to have shoddy rules that are very expensive on a market at a time where the rest of the world wants to take our capital markets.
  • I don't think it's a smart agenda.
  • And I think it's really important that we expose that.
  • And at the same time, he hasn't provided any sense of some way to operate for digital assets.
  • So they're going overseas.
  • And we're losing competition.
  • We've got a lot of competition in Asia and in Europe around a regulatory regime that is sensible.
  • And we have no regulatory regime.
  • So those are the things I want to expose this morning.
  • I think they're very important for the American economy.
  • What are the rules that he has implemented and or proposed?
  • And oftentimes, there's been a lot of rules proposed that have not been implemented that you most object to.
  • Well, there are 53 of them, Andrew.
  • So the volume of this is the one thing I want to point out.
  • Individual members of my committee have specific concerns about rulemaking.
  • The climate rulemaking is a major undertaking.
  • The human capital rulemaking is a major undertaking.
  • And his latest missive about changing national market regulation is a major initiative.
  • So if you talk about everything from his response to GameStop to how corporations disclose their employees and employee benefits, it's a substantial change to be a public company here in the United States.
  • Oh, yeah, I want you can get back to this.
  • I just want to since we have a leader, Jeffrey's coming on later today.
  • Congressman, I just want to maybe we'll cut a soundbite from you.
  • But this this idea that Speaker McCarthy has, is it will it pass?
  • And would it?
  • I don't make light of it.
  • But you think it might take 15 or 16 votes to try and get his side to pass what you know, whether the votes are there, you know, you knew exactly what was going on when when Speaker McCarthy was getting elected.
  • Could he do it?
  • What is what he talked about yesterday and send something to the Senate?
  • If you talk to the far right members, and I'm going to ask, you know, Leader Jeffrey's this when he's on, I could I could play your whatever your response here.
  • Well, look, the Democrats are the minority in the house.
  • It's their goal to trip up the majority party.
  • That's just in the nature of the minority.
  • What we're going to do is pass a debt ceiling increase.
  • You are since the administration is unwilling to negotiate.
  • And we're going to have commensurate spending cuts and regulatory changes that are going to help grow our economy.
  • That package, the House Republicans will pass within the next two, three weeks.
