  • Introduction to Video Content
  • Revenge is a French film directed by Coralie Fargeat, who is making her feature debut with this movie. The story follows Jen, played by Matilda Lutz, who is involved in a fling with a married man. When the man and his two friends go on a hunting trip to the desert, Jen is brutally raped and left for dead. However, she survives and decides to seek revenge on the three men. The film has gained a lot of attention at festivals, particularly the Midnight Madness section of TIFF. Initially, the movie portrays Jen in a stereotypical way, but her character undergoes a drastic change, transforming from a 6 to an 11, as the story progresses. Revenge is known for its extreme violence and graphic scenes, leaving no room for restraint. This article will delve deeper into the themes and impact of the film, exploring the director's vision and the implications of its portrayal of female characters.
  • Subtitles section
  • Revenge is directed by Coralie Fargeat, a French filmmaker, who is making her feature debut with this film.
  • She's directed a few shorts before.
  • And this film follows Jen, played by Matilda Lutz.
  • You may recognize her from The Last Rings movie.
  • She's having a fling with a married man, and he has gone off on a trip to the desert to go hunting with two friends.
  • And when she's there, she's brutally raped and left for dead.
  • And when she doesn't die, she sets off on a revenge path to find those three guys in the desert and make sure they never do anything like that again to anyone else.
  • This film has had a lot of buzz out of festivals.
  • It played at the Midnight Madness section of TIFF.
  • And a lot of people have talked about the movie, but I didn't really know how far it went.
  • And the film starts off in a sort of stereotypical way.
  • Jen is portrayed the way Hollywood tends to look at women like this.
  • She arrives on a helicopter with bright blonde hair, sucking on a lollipop.
  • The film focuses quite often on her body, and the way these three men view her is sort of a disposable object.
  • But at one point in time in the film, a very drastic change occurs, and her entire character shifts and is reborn into something else.
  • And this is when the film goes from about a 6 to an 11. Holy shit.
  • No exaggeration, Revenge is one of the bloodiest movies I have ever seen.
  • This film goes for it.
  • There's not a single moment that feels like it's been restrained.
  • There are brutally violent sequences that are difficult to watch.
  • This film pulls absolutely no punches.
  • And there were a few times where I was sort of wincing, like looking between squinted eyes at what was happening, because this film goes for it.
  • There's no holding back.
  • And I really have to commend Fargeat and Matilda Lutz especially for doing these scenes, and for making them really awesome and entertaining.
  • Because something that I love about this movie, I've watched quite a bit of interviews with the director, and she has been very clear that she wanted to make an entertaining genre film.
  • A very bloody movie that attributed the types of films she loves.
  • She has talked about how inspired she was by Spielberg's Duel, and the amount of tension he was able to sustain in that film, or Tarantino's Kill Bill.
  • She wanted to make a film that was like Rambo or a Mad Max movie, but from a different perspective.
  • From a refreshingly unique perspective, and she succeeded.
  • But Jen's character goes through a drastic shift very early on in the film, after the horrific event that happens to her.
  • And she becomes literally reborn, like a phoenix from the ashes.
  • In fact, there's some kind of on-the-nose symbolism about that, that didn't always land, I think, maybe as well as she wanted to.
  • But I thought it was kind of cool still.
  • Her hair color even changes as she embarks on this brutal revenge path.
  • And so, this film isn't entirely to be taken seriously as a straightforward narrative.
  • And if you do, it's going to be really difficult to suspend disbelief, especially with an event involving a tree.
  • Because some things happen that just don't happen.
  • Lots of blood is lost.
  • Many injuries are healed in ways that would possibly make it even worse.
  • And it's not really meant to be taken seriously.
  • And if you do, you are going to check out very soon.
  • The editing in the film plays a major role in putting us a little off-center.
  • We're watching events that we think we understand.
  • It's just that the perspective that she chooses to show us these events isn't like most films.
  • Yeah, sure, there's some violent scenes that are just wide shots of violent stuff happening.
  • But the way she intersplices sound effects, like a scene where one of the men is eating.
  • And we see his mouth chewing the food.
  • And we hear these really exaggerated sound effects.
  • Or a scene where blood is falling.
  • And you see an ant struggling to get away from the droplets of blood.
  • And the sound effects, again, are so intense.
  • It's sequences like that that make this film stand out.
  • That focus on filmmaking.
  • That show us a different perspective.
  • It makes the film feel so much more fresh.
  • With every confrontation, the film gets increasingly more horrific.
  • Leading to a brilliant finale that I thought was really riveting.
  • Although there is a point where I just wanted to tell a character to stop moving forward.
  • And turn around and wait.
  • Just stand there and wait.
  • And the scene will end.
  • But I get that that would sort of halt the progression of the moment.
  • But there are certain scenes like that where characters make choices.
  • And you're like, just do it a little differently.
  • And you're good.
  • If you can't suspend your disbelief, you are going to check out early.
  • If you take this film very seriously, you are going to check out early.
  • And you're going to miss the point.
  • This is a genre movie.
  • This is a revenge movie.
  • And this is a brilliant new filmmaker who is firing on all cylinders.
  • And I really can't wait to see what she does next.
  • I would love to see her get her hands on a big budget action film.
  • And I feel like with her inspirations she's talked about in various interviews, she would really like to do that.
  • And I want to see it.
  • I'm going to give Revenge an A-.
  • It's in select theaters now as well as VOD.
  • I saw it on Amazon Video.
  • So do check it out.
  • I think it's worth your time.
  • Guys, thank you so much as always for watching.
  • And if you like this, you can click right here and get Stuckmanized.
