  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In this video, James Maddison takes us into the all-new diary room for the Asia-Pacific tour. He shares his experience of the first training session at the famous Wacker and talks about having the full squad back together. Maddison describes the welcoming ceremony they received from the locals, which was a new experience for him. He also discusses his interactions with Sonny and the warm welcome he has received from the whole group. As a new player, Maddison emphasizes the importance of making newcomers feel comfortable in the changing room. He praises the clarity in the way the manager communicates and the high intensity and quality of the training sessions. Maddison then selects a question from one of the five pots and is asked what he misses most about home when on tour. He provides an easy answer to this question.
  • Subtitles section
  • So Madders is here and he's the first one into our all-new diary room for the Asia-Pacific tour and look, you've just come back off first training session at the famous Wacker, how was it?
  • Yeah, it was all good.
  • We've got the full squad back together now, so Sonny and Skippy joined up today, so everyone's in the building.
  • It was good fun, yeah, it was good.
  • We got a welcoming ceremony off some of the locals, a traditional thing here in Australia which is very new to me.
  • But yeah, squad's all here, first training in the bank and the lads are happy, yeah.
  • So you've spent your first few hours with Sonny?
  • I have, yeah, he's a top man, I've met him a few times anyway and stuff, but to be fair on the whole, the whole group really has been very welcoming.
  • Good crack, good banter, easy to transition into, sometimes as a new player it can be difficult going into a new changing room.
  • So me personally, I've always tried to make sure if there's a new player, just how would I want to feel if it's me, and this time it is me.
  • The way the gaffer talks and the way he wants us to play is very clear, and that shows in what he wants from the training sessions.
  • Chris Davis, assistant coach, I know very well from my time at Leicester, we worked together for nearly five years.
  • And then getting to know the other coaches as well, no-one's stood on the side, they're all involved, all taking part in the training, and it's been high intensity and good quality, so all you can ask for really.
  • We've got five pots here, with ten lots of questions in each pot, so give me a number from one to ten and we'll do it pot at a time with you.
  • One question from each.
  • Ten.
  • Unbelievable question to pull out this one for you.
  • What do you miss most about home when you're on tour?
  • I've got an easy answer for me.
  • Funnily enough.
  • That's quite an easy answer for me.
  • My family, especially because I've got two newborns who are a couple of weeks old, so I would definitely say family, just because I'm missing that precious time.
  • As they're so small, my newly-born twins, so definitely missing them, missing my boy and my dogs and my girlfriend, but part and parcel of the job, it's just one of them sacrifices you have to make.
  • My missus understands that, my family understands that, I'm sure they'll understand that when they're a little bit older.
  • Football in pre-season, one to five?
  • Three.
  • What is the toughest session you can remember in pre-season?
  • Ever?
  • Ever.
  • Wow, what a question that is.
  • There was one I remember at Govendry actually, but this was maybe at the back end of pre-season, but it was more a punishment I think.
  • I think we as a group got in trouble for doing something wrong, maybe leaving the changing room at peak size, and we were only young, we were maybe like 16, 17, first year scholars, and we went outside and we did a running session and it was hell.
  • It was uphills, back down, and there was one point when we had to run around all the pitches at the training ground with a partner, with a pole over our head.
  • So you have to run around like this, so you're holding the front of the pole, your partner's holding the back of the pole, but you have to get in at a certain time and you're not allowed to let go of the pole.
  • And that sounds funny, but let me tell you, after a few laps of that, your arms are dead.
  • Right, put three teammates, one to ten.
  • Seven.
  • Who is the joker in the pack so far?
  • To be fair, there's a few candidates in here.
  • A few of the foreign boys have got a bit of banter and I can tell are the jokers.
  • Bissouma's funny.
  • Biss is funny.
  • He already set his territory on the speaker in the training ground.
  • He said, I'm the DJ, no one else.
  • Give it a few weeks and I'll be in there.
  • OK, pot four is life.
  • Life, wow, that would be vague.
  • How many am I choosing from?
  • One to ten.
  • Two.
  • Have you ever had a job, or did you ever have a job, outside football?
  • No, apart from work experience in school where I went with one of my friends.
  • Dad, he's a builder, which was a grind to be fair.
  • And to be fair, he did pay as well for then.
  • Paid as well, gave us a bit of cash and we did a few days' work.
  • Yeah, that was tough.
  • That was really tough.
  • My back after them few days was in turmoil.
  • Up and down ladders, carrying bags of cement or whatever it was.
  • I remember it being a grind and thinking I've got to do that for the rest of my life if I don't become a footballer.
  • Thankfully, here we are.
  • Brilliant, OK, pot five, pot luck.
  • One to ten.
  • One.
  • How do you like your eggs, James Madison?
  • With a kiss in the morning, is that the answer?
  • How do I like my eggs?
  • Scrambled or poached, I would say.
  • Runny?
  • Poached?
  • Yeah, fairly.
  • I want it to just gush out.
  • Or scrambled, I don't mind scrambled eggs on toast in the morning.
  • A little bit of cheese, that's what I've been going for.
