  • Mayor Brandon Johnson was questioned about the surge of violence over the holiday weekend in Chicago, following 45 shooting incidents tracked by CBS two. In a conversation with families affected by gun violence, Mayor Johnson was presented with new statistics on the issue by reporter Terra Molina. Over 60 people were shot in Chicago during the weekend, including 30-year-old Ashanti Kelly. Despite being a victim herself, Ashanti has been working diligently to prevent violence through her involvement in a Chicago-based violence prevention nonprofit, focused on at-risk youth. Ashanti's mother, Candace Hines, shared that Ashanti's motivation for her work comes from the tragic loss of her father and stepfather to gun violence. Ashanti was shot in the face, arm, and leg, but managed to drive herself and her friend to Strozier Hospital. She is currently in critical condition. The shooting occurred on their way home from a party in the early morning hours. According to the police, there have been a total of 46 shootings, resulting in 62 victims and 10 fatalities since Friday evening. Candace Hines, representing the many affected residents of Chicago, emphasized the urgent need to stop gun violence, as it continues to tear families apart and create chaos.
