  • You know our next guest from the film Roger and Me.
  • It's the highest grossing documentary in history and he has a new movie entitled The Big One opening April Tenth.
  • Here's Michael Moore.
  • Michael, good to see you.
  • Thanks for having me on.
  • You know, it seemed like the last thing I heard about you prior to this was you were doing a television show for Fox and O.G.
  • Simpson was a guest on your show.
  • Now that actually happened, is that right?
  • Yeah, yeah.
  • We just shot a pilot for a late night show.
  • Uh huh.
  • Oh, well.
  • not at this hour.
  • What have you heard?
  • It's like two in the morning.
  • And they said try to get O.J.
  • or you said we'll get or he happened to be in the audience?
  • I had this meeting with the president of Fox he said so what kind of guests can you get on your show?
  • Right.
  • So just off the cuff I just said
  • I think Mother Teresa and O.J.
  • would be a good combination.
  • Sure.
  • This was like last summer, and then a week later Mother Teresa died.
  • So there you go, you're down to O.J.
  • Yeah, then I'm down to O.J., and they said I gotta go get O.J.
  • So I actually convinced them to come on.
  • But you must recognize that as bizarre as everything attending that was and is, that things that happen afterward seem to be just otherworldly.
  • That O.J.
  • is now, you call him up, and he says, yeah, okay, I'll be a guest.
  • Yeah.
  • Really?
  • Yeah.
  • Yeah.
  • He was watching a movie when I called him.
  • Selena.
  • And so he shows up, and then what is kind of the vibe in the room when my next guest, OJ, comes out?
  • I said our next guest is a star of film and television.
  • He won the Heisman Trophy.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, OJ Simpson.
  • He comes out.
  • The audience is a little stunned.
  • Are they stunned angry, or are they just stunned?
  • They're just stunned.
  • They think actually it's a fake.
  • It's an actor looking like OJ.
  • An OJ look alike.
  • Right, right.
  • There's big business in OJ look alikes these days.
  • And I'm telling you, if that was your career, then, well, that's too bad.
  • So he sits down, and I said to him, I said, now, do you know the guy?
  • Had you a relationship with him?
  • No, no, I'd never met the guy before in my life, no.
  • He just sits down, and I said, OG, I think we might as well get this out of the way.
  • I think the question that's on my mind and the minds of everyone here is, do you think that adding ten yards to the kickoff has ruined professional football?
  • Right.
  • And he actually thought I was serious in the answer to the question.
  • And then I said, you know, back in your day, you didn't have all the high tech equipment that the players wear today.
  • I mean, like, these days, the guy, the receivers have these really tight fitting gloves that they wear.
  • Right.
  • And then he, I think, you know, sort of caught on.
  • And then, but from that point, and then you just flat out, you just started asking him about the crime, right?
  • Yeah, yeah, yeah.
  • And we got into the whole thing.
  • What did you say to him?
  • Just kill her.
  • Good.
  • And did he ever look at you like, what's up?
  • What are you doing to me?
  • Or was it all just another day in the life of OJ?
  • No, he said, well, I said, well, you killed him.
  • No, I didn't kill him.
  • I said, well, you were there.
  • You were there.
  • Maybe you were there.
  • And that's when it actually started sweating a little bit.
  • And I've always thought that maybe, you know, there's more to this story than what the L.A.
  • police, you know, have told us.
  • And we haven't really heard the whole story, but... And, you know, we didn't hear it that night either, but... Do you, after this encounter with O.J., do you have a different impression of him or of what might have happened?
  • Or is it pretty much just kind of reinforcing what you already felt or knew?
  • I feel that the only person or thing that knows what happened there is the dog.
  • The dog is really the only witness to this crime.
  • But he said a number of interesting things that I thought didn't mean whether or not he killed these two people.
  • For instance, the Bronco chase.
  • He said that when the first cop car pulled up behind them, they actually pulled over, stopped the Bronco, got out.
  • And then the police had their guns pulled, and they dove back in.
  • And that's when they took off.
  • And then the police, the television helicopter showed up.
  • I didn't know that.
  • So that was interesting.
  • Yeah.
  • But he, I mean, from the point they couldn't find him, he was a fugitive, in fact.
  • I mean, the fugitive status did not begin then.
  • Right.
  • But I never thought, I mean, a chase that's forty miles an hour, I just kind of, it was kind of, it was getting in the way of the basketball game, too, as far as I was concerned.
  • So, you know.
  • Very bizarre.
  • you have a new film a new documentary and this is takes place you're you're on a book tour out promoting your book and it occurs to you after a couple of unusual events or perhaps not so unusual events take place well geez maybe I ought to be documenting this on video as well
  • Yeah, actually I'd gone to about fifteen cities on this tour and I spent most of the day in the hotel room raiding the minibar and watching game shows in my underwear.
  • So I was getting kind of bored and I thought, bored?
  • Are you kidding me?
  • Bored?
  • What the hell's wrong with you?
  • The minibar did it for you.
  • Actually, I was in Detroit on this tour, and I'm in a radio interview, and in through the door walks Neil Bush.
  • While I'm in this interview, the son of George Bush, and he freaks out.
  • He goes, what are you doing here?
  • And I said, what are you doing here?
  • He said, where's the camera?
  • And I said, oh, there's no camera.
  • It's just a little radio interview for a book tour.
  • And he comes up to me and he pinches my cheek and he goes, aw, no cameras, aw.
  • And he walks away and I said, that's it, dammit, I'm getting the cameras.
  • So from that, thanks to George Bush's son, I started making this movie.
  • because I think if you see Roger and me, and forgive me if I'm presuming something here, it looks like the work of a lifetime, and maybe there is nothing else to duplicate it.
  • You know what I mean?
  • Because it seemed so of you, so of the time, that, well, maybe that's it in this one area.
  • And if it is, you know, God bless you.
  • That's quite an accomplishment.
  • But now you've been able to put together just as equally a compelling piece of work.
  • Oh, thank you.
  • Yeah, it's like Roger Mee, but I would say it's kind of the epic version of it.
  • I go to, you know, a number of cities and it's double the budget.
  • I went from two hundred to four hundred thousand dollars.
  • You talked to Phil Knight, the head of Nike.
  • I talked to Phil Knight, asked him, you know, why he doesn't make shoes in this country and he said, well, because Americans don't want to make shoes.
  • I said, well, that's not true.
  • I'll go back to Flint, Michigan and get you five hundred people who will make shoes for you.
  • Now, he wanted you to take some of this out of the interview, right?
  • Yes, he did.
  • Did you take some of it out of the interview?
  • No, no, nothing.
  • No, they've been threatening and they were upset.
  • And you asked him to open a Nike plant in Flint, your hometown, to help the economy there.
  • And if he did that, would you then take some stuff out of the interview?
  • No, no, I still wouldn't do it, no.
  • But I will if, actually, the film opens on April Tenth, so if he decides to build this factory before then,
  • Miramax has offered to go in and actually put a little epilogue in at the end of the film showing Phil with a golden shovel.
  • We've already bought the shovel and we've got the hard hat.
  • So it'd be pretty good.
  • Breaking ground in Flint.
  • If he's a smart man, he'll do that.
  • I hope so.
  • But I believe that the reason people do this, they kind of outsource or whatever they call it, they take the labor to other countries because it's less expensive.
  • But I just heard on the radio that a new pair of Air Jordans is a hundred and fifty dollars a pair.
  • Right.
  • So how much more expensive could they possibly be?
  • Well, they're paying these kids over there forty cents an hour to work on assembly lines, teenage girls.
  • And there's shoe companies here like Hush Puppies and New Balance that make their shoes in this country.
  • Maybe they don't make as much of a profit, but they still make a profit and they employ people.
  • You know what I'm going to do?
  • I'm going to get a camera and I'm going to go talk to some of your employees.
  • What do you think of that?
  • I'm going to get a camera and go talk to your boss at Westinghouse.
  • Talk to that pinhead.
  • I'll go with you.
  • You're coming with me, right?
  • For Michael Moore, the film The Big One opens April Tenth.
  • We'll be right back.
  • Michael, nice to see you.
