  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In this video, we discuss the near-miss incident between Red Bull's Formula 1 drivers during the Austrian Grand Prix. The opening lap of the race saw a close call between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, who both drive for Red Bull, the dominant team of the season. If Perez had managed to pass Verstappen at that moment, it could have potentially changed the outcome of the race. Therefore, it is clear that this incident deserved attention and should have been a story. However, both drivers handled the situation well after the race, downplaying its significance and maintaining a united front. This was a refreshing change compared to past inter-team incidents we have witnessed. Additionally, the fact that the race ultimately turned out favorably for Red Bull may have helped diffuse any tension between the drivers. Although Perez may have been disappointed by losing second place for a short period, the overall outcome of the race overshadowed any potential frustration. Given that Verstappen had a strong performance and Red Bull secured a 1-2 finish, neither driver seemed particularly bothered by the incident. Overall, the way in which the Red Bull drivers handled the near-miss demonstrated their professionalism and ability to work as a team.
  • Subtitles section
  • Josh, let's return to Red Bull now, and specifically the brief flashpoint between the two drivers on Saturday.
  • They were very keen to tell me that it shouldn't be a story when I asked them about it in the press conference after the sprint.
  • Were they right?
  • No, is a very, very short answer.
  • The slightly longer answer is that, you know, these are two drivers in the dominant car of the season, and they almost collided on the opening lap.
  • It was one of the rare occasions where, if this happens to be in challenge wheel-to-wheel this season, with actual sort of meanings, if Perez had got past him then, then maybe the race would have played out differently and there could have been a rare defeat inflicted.
  • So yes, it should have absolutely been a story.
  • But on their part, I thought they both handled it extremely well after the race.
  • They both were singing from the same hymn book and, you know, they were both keen to play it down and properly, I thought, did a very good job of that compared to some inter-team incidents we've seen in the past,
  • Perhaps helped by the fact that it all turned out very well for them anyway.
  • So it didn't have real consequence, you know, Sergio Perez was probably a bit annoyed to lose second place for just, well, I think it was about 12 laps.
  • Had the rain remained, or had the rain intensified rather, and it not dried out, perhaps he'd have had a bit more of a difficult time, he'd have still probably come through to second place.
  • Maybe he'd have been a bit more annoyed then, but considering by halfway through the sprint, it was back to a Red Bull 1-2 and Verstappen clearly had the upper hand, I think neither were particularly bothered.
  • I think both of them know, especially Perez, this is not the incident to just kind of kick up a big fuss about when you're in a position like that.
  • I feel like you've got to kind of pick your moments and sort of what you make a public outburst on.
  • And this one was nowhere near being anything like something that you should be publicly furious about.
  • They did a good job, I think, of clearing the air in the garage between them, but not their garage, the FIA garage.
  • You could see a bit of the exchange on television afterwards.
  • It was smart to get ahead of it.
  • Obviously, we saw in Brazil last year what can happen when they let it run and when it looks a little bit like, you know, Red Bull have to intervene and knock their heads together and say, stop doing this.
  • They dealt with it between themselves before they then stood in front of the media, so I thought it was quite clever.
  • And Perez even told Verstappen, I think, that he couldn't see him and Verstappen seemed to accept that.
  • And they both reiterated that to everybody.
  • So, as you said, they sorted it and that really helped.
  • He could see him, though, because he could see him looking in the mirror in slow-mo.
  • Yeah, because you see, he moves across to cover someone that might be there and then he has a proper look and then he goes across.
  • Confirms he is there and keeps going across.
  • And even if he didn't know it was Max, he knew it was a car and there was a high probability it would be Max.
  • So, you know, I actually, I agree completely that they did handle it very well.
  • And actually, the way Max responded to my question, which was about, well, it could have gone worse.
  • You know, are you 100% happy?
  • Everything was fine with what happened there and there's nothing to learn.
  • So, Max quite cleverly sort of turned it to, oh, he's just looking for clicks, et cetera.
  • You know, I thought it was quite a clever answer from him.
  • It didn't answer the question.
  • Tried to make, well, it didn't try to make me look stupid, but it was sort of a funny way of doing it.
  • I was quite happy with the answer because the fact he didn't want to 100% clear it all said a lot.
  • And you could see I was to write a story from it, so that's all that matters.
  • When Perez put Verstappen on the grass and Verstappen rejoined without losing a huge amount of ground, I knew exactly what was coming at turn three.
  • There was no way that Verstappen wasn't sending up the inside and obviously then got, I don't think what he did at turn three was intentional in terms of, you know, he quite clearly locked up, didn't he?
  • And slid a bit wide.
  • That moved down into turn four.
  • It had echoes of Hamilton versus Rosberg about it.
  • But they're also good because actually Verstappen's pass at turn three was, I'd call it a block pass in that he just got the car there in front of Perez.
  • I don't think it was intentional.
  • That was fine.
  • And the turn four one was, regardless of how it happened, it was a classic pin, wasn't it?
  • It was like pin someone on the outside.
  • So they were both, regardless of how they happened, they were both fine anyway.
  • Yeah.
  • I think turn four was the one that was more calculated.
  • Turn three was the lunge and then he just, he just got it stopped.
  • I think that was, uh, I think the block was not, um, he would have obviously blocked him anyway, but I think it was the little slide under braking that did the damage.
  • It was just that little hint of the championship battle we haven't quite had, which made for a good talking point and still good for Red Bull, a one, two in the sprint.
  • So they did what they needed to do.
