  • Introduction to Video Content
  • The May jobs report has revealed a strong labor market with a rise of 339,000 payrolls, surpassing expectations. This is the highest increase since January, when it reached 472,000. Private payrolls also saw a significant rise at 283,000. The unemployment rate stands at 3.7 percent, which comes as a surprise since the last time it was this low was in October of last year. If we want to find a higher rate, we have to go back to February of the previous year.
Moving on to earnings, there has been a slight decrease in the month-over-month change, from 0.5 to 0.3, the lowest level since February. However, when looking at the year-over-year change, earnings show a 4.3 percent increase, almost reaching the threshold of 4.2. This is the lowest level since June of 21, when it was recorded at 3.9 percent.
The average hourly work week stands at 34.3, a small deviation from the expected and previous numbers. Although it may not seem significant, it can impact factors such as productivity.
The labor force participation rate remains unchanged at 62.6 percent, which is in line with expectations and the previous month's rate. This figure has been relatively steady, with the lowest rate recorded recently being 62.3 percent.
Additionally, the underemployment rate, known as U6, has ticked up slightly to 6.7 percent. This year, the rate has ranged from a low of 6.6 percent to a high of 6.8 percent.
  • Subtitles section
  • And the numbers are out for the May jobs report and boy it certainly wasn't on the weak side.
  • 339,000.
  • 339,000 non-farm payrolls.
  • That's the best since January when we were at 472,000.
  • Private payrolls 283,000.
  • The unemployment rate 3.7 percent.
  • 3.7 percent.
  • There is a surprise.
  • Last time we saw 3.7 percent was October of last year.
  • To find a higher number you have to go back to February of last year.
  • That's quite a ways back.
  • Now let's look at those earnings.
  • Yes, that 0.5 turns into up 0.3. Up 0.3. Up 0.3 and we've had many of them.
  • That is the lowest month over month since the lowest one in February when it went to zero.
  • Now if we look at what's going on year over year, 4.3 percent.
  • Coming right down to that threshold I believe is important at 4.2. 4.3 equals March and that is the lowest level going all the way back to June of 21 when it was 3.9 percent.
  • Let's look at the work week.
  • Average hourly work week 34.3. Now that doesn't sound like a big miss.
  • It's down one-tenth from what we were expecting and down one-tenth from the rearview but trust me it makes a bit of a difference especially if you're looking at things like productivity.
  • Finally, labor force participation rate unchanged 62.6. It's what we expected.
  • It's what we had last month.
  • It's what we have this month.
  • How does 62.6 compare?
  • Well the lowest read we've had of late has been 62.3 and that was, I'm sorry I take that back, the best rate that we've had is 62.6 and we want to pay attention to that so we're equaling.
  • How many have we had?
  • We have one, two, two.
  • Just this year alone this would make it number three and finally the underemployment rate known as U6 is 6.7 percent.
  • It ticked up a bit.
  • We've had 6.8 as the high ground for this year, 6.6 the low ground for this year.
  • Interest rates, well they've moved a bit higher but not much.
  • Here we hover now on a 10-year at 363 and just to point out how much movement we've had.
  • We settled last Friday at 380, at 380 okay and we were at 361 going into this number.
  • Two-year no yield at 440 right now.
  • It was going into this around 435 so we see yields have popped a bit but they really haven't popped as much as I thought they would on the non-farm number.
  • Maybe many are paying attention to those earnings.
