  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In this video, Spencer Oliver reacts to Terence Crawford stopping Errol Spence in their recent boxing match. The fight took place overnight in Las Vegas and Oliver provides his insights on the one-sided nature of the bout. Initially, Spence seemed to have a good start but Crawford quickly turned the tide, dominating from the fourth round onwards. There were two knockdowns in the seventh round, signaling the nearing end for Spence. Ultimately, in the ninth round, Crawford unleashed a barrage of punches, prompting the referee to step in and save Spence from further punishment. Oliver believes that Crawford's performance solidified his status as the pound-for-pound number one boxer, surpassing Inoue Inoue, who recently won his fourth world title in different weight divisions. Crawford's stellar display in this fight showcased his undeniable talent and potentially cemented his position as the top fighter in the sport.
  • Subtitles section
  • Let's talk about Terence Crawford stopping Errol Spence then overnight in Las Vegas.
  • Spencer Oliver is with us.
  • Good morning.
  • I know obviously you're watching it all night and keeping TalkSport listeners up to date with what was going on.
  • It was surprisingly straightforward, wasn't it?
  • It was surprisingly one-sided actually.
  • Tony, you come in and watch the fight as well, didn't you?
  • You got here a little bit early to actually watch the fight.
  • I was on your shoulder, wasn't I?
  • You was, mate.
  • You was whilst we was in the studio.
  • And yeah, it was surprisingly one-sided.
  • I think that Errol Spence started the fight quite well.
  • I think he edged the first round and then that was it.
  • I think he got knocked down in the second round and Terence Crawford then seemed to turn the screw and he took over and he looked like he was really dominating as early as the fourth round.
  • There was two knockdowns in round seven as well and you knew the end was then quite near.
  • And yeah, round nine was the conclusive round.
  • There was a big barrage of punches and the referee jumped in to save Errol Spence from taking any further punishment.
  • And I think what Terence Crawford had done there was underline his status as pound for pound number one.
  • I think Inoue Inoue, who won for fourth world title at different weights on Tuesday actually, the Japanese boxer.
  • Yeah, he was light flyweight champion.
  • Then he went flyweight champion, jumped up, missed superfly, jumped up to bantam, just won the super bantam and people going, is he the pound for pound star?
  • Well, we've just found our pound for pound star.
  • He may have held that title for a couple of days, but that performance there from Terence Crawford was unbelievable.
  • I mean, this was a fight.
  • It was like Terence Crawford has created history because he's become the first male to in the four belt era to win undisputed titles at different weights.
  • You know, I mean, these these do not come around often.
  • Errol Spence was, you know, 22 and 0 with 18 KOs going into that one.
  • You know, he's a great fighter himself and it was a high, high quality contest and Terence made it look easy, didn't he?
  • Well, walk in the park.
  • It was.
  • It felt like that.
  • It was.
  • It was like, this is so comfortable for him.
  • And, you know, it looked like he could add another fight straight after that, that one.
  • And I suppose the question is, is there anybody Spencer that you feel could give him a fight where, you know, Errol Spence went into this fight as a coin flip, really?
  • Even the bookmakers.
  • If it was a coin flip, this could go either way.
  • You, I remember you talking and you said always you just felt that Crawford had the edge.
  • Yeah.
  • But there was an edge there.
  • It was a, it was a chasm, wasn't it?
  • Yeah.
  • When I said I felt that Terence Crawford had the edge, I said, but this is just an opinion because that's how close this one is.
  • Errol Spence, maybe like he was the lifelong, you know, welterweight.
  • He's the guy that's the bigger of the two.
  • You know, Terence Crawford has like sort of organically got there.
  • Like he was a lightweight champion.
  • Then he moves up to super lightweight and become undisputed champion.
  • Then he jumped up to welterweight.
  • The question mark was, would he be able to deal with the size and the power and the relentless pressure that Errol Spence brings?
  • And the answer was, yeah, he controlled the space.
  • His judgment of distance was great.
  • His timing, his shot selection, everything there.
  • And to answer your question, Tone, of who can beat him?
  • I really don't know.
  • He made that look so easy.
  • Like you say, he looked like he was really in second gear.
  • He looked like there was more to come.
  • I mean, he even had time to dance with his family afterwards.
  • He looked fresh.
  • I mean, he wasn't breathing heavy.
  • Look at Errol Spence.
  • I was going to ask you, Spence.
  • I mean, look, boxers, sometimes you come up, and I had it in football, you come up against an opponent, you just think, wow, I just can't get the better of you.
  • I remember playing against Senter Arsenal.
  • Andy Linegan, I've spoken about him loads of times.
  • He played Senter Arsenal.
  • Every time I played against him, I hated him.
  • I just fitted badly against him.
  • It looked like Errol Spence was a bad, you know, it was a bad fit match-up for him.
  • Do you know what it was for Errol Spence?
  • He doesn't know how to lose.
  • You know, he's a winner.
  • You know, he's 22 and old, like I say, with 18 KOs, going into this one, he's a winner, and it become evident early that he was, you know, he was fighting full pace and laughing.
  • He knew that himself, Spence, and you could see slowly, but surely and systematically, he was getting his soul stolen from him by Terence Crawford.
  • He was chipping away, and it was just like becoming painful to watch, and you could see Spence trying everything he could to try and turn it around, but like you said, Tone, he was always, not just one move behind,
  • He was like two moves behind.
  • Whatever he done, Crawford had an answer for it.
  • It was like, it was a dominant display, and just underlined how good he is.
  • So was it Crawford's, what, hand speed too much?
  • Was it jab too much?
  • Just the whole package too much?
  • The whole package is like, I think the most important thing is, it was about who was going to control the pace of the fight, who was going to control the distance, and that's exactly what Terence Crawford done.
  • He decided when he wanted to sit in the pocket and fight, he decided when he wanted to move and keep the distance from Spence, Spence was the one that was always playing catch up, and that's what it was there.
  • You know, it was all about who was going to take control, and you know, stamp their authority early, and Terence Crawford done that, and it was, you know, it was, it was, it was a one-sided fight.
  • By the way, guys, he's already said that he's going to activate that rematch clause, because we were talking about it, wasn't he?
  • Yeah, he has.
  • He's already released a statement saying, because there's rematch clauses in it, it's insurance for a boxer.
  • When you're at that sort of level, you go, well, we've got to put it as a rematch clause.
  • Part of the package, yeah.
  • But he said, yep, I want to do it again, I want to dance again, and you know, he feels that.
  • Okay, so could we give Errol Spence a little bit of the benefit of the doubt?
  • He's had very little fighting for two years, really.
  • He's had the odd fight, hasn't he?
  • After the car accident.
  • Yeah, the car accident in October 2019, for anybody that doesn't know his backstory, and he had this car accident.
  • I think he, he was done for drinking whilst doing it as well.
  • But the car, it wasn't just a little accident.
  • The car went over six times.
  • How he survived, I never know.
  • I think he broke most bones in his body.
  • He was in hospital.
  • And to his credit, he's come back.
  • He's had two fights since then, but maybe not look the fighter that he once was before that.
  • And that may have had an impact on him as well, you know, that inactivity.
  • And I'll go, you know, at this stage of his career, it's not good to be inactive when you're 33 years of age.
  • Terence Crawford, the one that had the momentum, that's what I went with.
  • I took all that into account and thought Crawford just seems to have that momentum at the moment.
  • That's probably what we'll hear from Errol Spence, won't we?
  • We'll hear that, that inactivity, that rustiness, that's what happens.
  • Mark, you can't, I mean, you can't make an argument that he could get a result.
  • If we're going on what you witnessed tonight, it's a no contest.
  • Yeah, well, yeah, it is.
  • Well, from what you saw tonight, you go, what can he do different?
  • You know, what can he do different?
  • I'd say one thing in his favour is that he's spent a lifetime at welterweight, at 147.
  • I think if he moved up to like middleweight, which is 154, then he would have a better chance.
  • But I don't think Terence Crawford would do that because he's not a big welterweight anyway.
  • So, yeah, you know, but can we see if we see it again?
  • Well, you know, from the display that I saw there, there's only one winner.
  • You'd see the same story again.
  • Oh, come on, man.
  • That was just a predominant performance.
  • I mean, one-sided fight.
  • Like we were sitting and Tony come in early to watch it.
  • He thought, I've got to watch it.
  • And like, it weren't on any of the screens.
  • We'd had a right shutdown, right?
  • So this is what had happened.
  • A technical malfunction.
  • Massive technical malfunction.
  • So the producer that I was working with, Lil Stuart, right?
  • So he's there and I said, Stuart, what's happening?
  • He said, yeah, I've just had to get hold of the engineers.
  • I said, all right, brilliant.
  • So where is he then?
  • When's he coming?
  • He went, oh no, he ain't here, mate.
  • I went, where is he then?
  • Well, he lives in Norfolk.
  • I went, well, what are we going to do about that then?
  • We need to get a fight on this.
  • I've been sitting around for four hours.
  • We need the fight on.
  • And he went, do you know what he said?
  • He went, yeah, I've emailed him.
  • I went, you better get your money out, mate, and buy it.
  • And that's how we ended up on the computer in here.
  • Yeah, I was, I was closer to Spencer than Errol Spence was close to Scott.
  • Yeah, absolutely.
  • I just think people think it's really glamorous, this job, don't they?
  • Get a bloke from Norfolk, get him to send 20 quid down and we'll buy it.
  • They said to me, Spence, can you come in?
  • We want you to do a 10 o'clock, 10 to 10.30, and then we want you to do the fight.
  • So that was yesterday after the football show.
  • And I went, yeah, let's do that.
  • I'll be in.
  • Got in at half nine, 10, finished at 10.30.
  • I thought, I'm sitting here till four in the morning now.
  • So I've been here and then all of a sudden at three o'clock, we still ain't got the fight on.
  • I went, mate, you're going to have to get that fight, get that fight on.
  • There's going to be a fight kicking out here in the studio.
  • All that time, you've not bought us a tea.
  • At least there's a comfortable sofa out there, Spence.
  • Absolutely, I've had eight cups of coffee, you know.
