  • Introduction to Video Content
  • In this video, we will be exploring the misunderstood mechanic of lucky hit in Diablo 4. Lucky hit can be likened to the concept of proc coefficient in other games. Proc coefficient refers to the chance of a certain effect or ability being triggered when a player performs an action. To better understand this concept, let's imagine that we are designing a video game. In this game, we have a legendary power that inflicts 100% lightning damage on every hit. Now, let's focus on the character class of a barbarian. The barbarian has two different skills to choose from: whirlwind and hammer of the ancients (HOTA). Whirlwind is a skill that hits multiple times rapidly, while HOTA is slower but deals significant damage. Without lucky hit, using whirlwind would be the optimal choice as it would constantly trigger the 100% lightning damage on hit, resulting in double damage and the efficient destruction of enemies. However, using HOTA with its slow and singular hits would provide far less value with this legendary power. To create a sense of fairness in the game and allow players to choose between the two skills, Diablo 4 introduces the concept of proc coefficient. Proc coefficient determines the likelihood of an effect or ability being activated when a player uses a particular skill. By incorporating proc coefficient, the game designers can balance the usage of whirlwind and HOTA, ensuring that both skills have their own advantages and disadvantages. This mechanic adds depth and strategy to gameplay, as players must consider the proc coefficient of each skill when deciding which to use. Understanding lucky hit and proc coefficient is crucial for optimal gameplay and taking full advantage of the abilities of your chosen character class in Diablo 4.
  • Subtitles section
  • So let's learn what lucky hit is.
  • Get asked this every single day, need to put this on YouTube.
  • Let's learn what lucky hit is, one more time.
  • Lucky hit is proc coefficient in other games.
  • Okay, and if you don't know what that is, we're gonna learn what it is right now.
  • So let's pretend we were designing a video game, okay?
  • We're designing a video game.
  • We have a legendary power that does 100% lightning damage on hit, okay?
  • Whenever this procs, 100% lightning damage on hit.
  • Now let's say we're gonna make a barbarian.
  • Okay, here you are, and this is your barbarian.
  • There you are, And you're happy.
  • Okay, now you have a choice to use two different skills.
  • You can either use whirlwind, Or you can use hammer of the ancients.
  • Big hammer, big swing, big damage, right?
  • So let's pretend we were making a video game, and lucky hit doesn't exist.
  • My question is, which skill would you use?
  • Would you use whirlwind, or would you use hoda with this legendary power?
  • It's the cutest barb ever, you're right.
  • And the answer is, you would use whirlwind.
  • Why?
  • Well, if you ran up to a bunch of little monsters and started whirlwinding, whirlwinding is probably hitting, let's say, four times a seven.
  • Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.
  • And without lucky hit, this thing, or proc coefficient, this thing is, every time you're hitting, it's just adding 100% lightning damage.
  • So you're just doing double damage, and you're just destroying the whole thing with your whirlwind.
  • If instead you took hoda with a big hammer that's very slow, hit, hit, hit, you get no value out of this, you get way less value out of this power, so you wouldn't use hoda.
  • So how can you design the game where it's, quote unquote, fair to use these two things?
  • You build something in called proc coefficient.
  • And I think the reason why Blizzard renamed it lucky hit is because lucky hit makes it sound like something good happened, which is true, but actually it's really the opposite.
  • It's more of a nerf.
  • So they might build in a proc coefficient for whirlwind of 0.1, and they might build a proc coefficient for hoda of 0.5. So now, on lucky hit, or when the proc coefficient goes off, then this power activates.
  • So whirlwind, when you're going tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, with 0.1 proc coefficient, one out of 10 of those ticks is gonna hit for 100 lightning damage.
  • Hoda is slow, swing, swing, but now with a 0.5 proc coefficient, it's gonna hit half of the time.
  • So now, roughly, you get the same value out of your legendary power.
  • It's also a way to differentiate skills.
  • Let's say you have skill one that does 70 damage, but the proc coefficient or the lucky hit is 10, and skill two does 30 damage.
  • You'd be like, wow, I'm never using skill two.
  • This sucks, but the proc coefficient is 50 or even higher.
  • Some skills in the game, I think like kick, for example, have 100% proc coefficient.
  • It means this always goes off.
  • So what it really is, it's a way to nerf the guaranteed chance for this to happen.
  • Or you could say you start at zero and we buff it up to 0.1 and call it a lucky hit and spin it as a positive.
  • The kick got nerfed to 40%.
  • Okay, they already nerfed it, okay.
  • Well, it used to be 100%.
  • But that is lucky hit.
  • It's a chance for you to proc all of these different things in the game.
  • So when you're looking at two skills, if you do the math and you come up with roughly the same value, and one of them has a much better lucky hit, and you have uniques and legendary powers and talents and passives,
  • And maybe in the future set bonuses that say, on lucky hit, you stun, you generate resources, you throw a chain lightning, whatever it is, the one with the higher lucky hit might be better, all right?
  • It's a balancing stat.
  • So that is what lucky hit is in Diablo 4.
